I got sand, lol. I siphon it every week. Only part of siphoning that I hate is the siphon tube smacking corals and making accidental frags. Curious what my ammonia is at, your right I haven't tested ammonia since the tank finished cycling. Dry rock for the win! Awesome and very informative video, thank you for your time, dedication and putting this out there for us reefers to enjoy.

I'm definitely going with the "dead rock" long term cured method on the new setup. I have had too many tank fails in the past. My next tank will get the best jumping off point i can give it.

My pistol shrimp literally moves the entirety of the sandbed around at least once a month, he will just go on a tear randomly and will change the depth of the bed from 1-4 inches. The tank has about 220 square inches of bottom and he could likely do more, bigger tanks would just need more shrimp!

There are 2 types of bio bricks, one for aerobic and one for anaerobic. One is meant for high flow areas and the one with the nubs on the bottom is for low flow. Mad Hatter has a video all about those bio bricks.

Have been thinking about adding a 100 gallon (maybe 300) tote with live rock and a small amount of sand and keep it covered. It would be separate from my sump or fuge and would be piped off my return line. In this way I am hoping to gain the biological benefits and add additional water volume for stability. Perhaps it will eventually be full of sponges as well which always seem to benefit sponges. Just trying to find the space in my "fish room" right now.

I've been reading up on the bacteria like microbacter 7 and was wondering if there's benefit to dosing regularly in established tanks as there's so much said about degrading bacteria strains and die off clogging ceramic media's, the bacterias claim that they offer different strains and can combat waste and uneaten food

I know sand has its advantages and disadvantages, but I do not like the look without sand or aragonite, it just seems too artificial appearance to me. For me a layer of 40mm aragonite works great and looks great, not cheap but for getting the look and design that I want then I have to pay :)

You didn't talked about larger particle substrates. I use crushed shells in my tank and the pieces are large enough that I can have as much flow as my coral can handle without blowing it around. There's also plenty of room between the particles for oxygen to diffuse down into the substrate. I get a ton of extra surface area in my tank which is important for me because my tank is 5 gallons!
@Isaac_gaming1210
@Isaac_gaming1210 5 жыл бұрын
everyone avoids crush coral and shells for substrate because no one likes the look and over time (not that long) its worse than sand causing high nitrates and bad water quality by trapping lots of waste. theres other options for substrate that are larger than sand (pink fiji sand) so it wont get blown around and still have the nice look to it.

BRS team interesting question: I agree 100% with your thoughts on bare bottom being significantly better for a variety of reasons which is not limited to being a nutrient sink and elevating flow. To what extent can bare bottom tanks be run with select species of fish? My primary concern here is with Mandarin Gobies who need a significant pod population to survive in very large systems. I am hoping to set up an 8 foot system in the next year or so and am aiming to add a Mandarin 18 or so months after establishment. Is sand a limiting factor for this fish?

I think the long term plan with my sand bed will be to just remove the old sand, small areas at a time, and dry it out, vinegar-rinse and replace it or just replace it with new sand on a bi-annual basis. Removing sand that's just 2 years old shouldn't run too much risk of bombing the tank and there's enough space between my rock-scape and the back of the tank to access the "toilet" that's back there!..lol. This might be a good compromise if you're willing to put in the extra effort in order to keep the aesthetics of sand.

I don't keep sand in the display and haven't for years. I have however wondered about using live sand in the sump. perhaps in a tray, with only about 1.5" and vacuum it regularly. I think it would be a good alternative to live rock or marine pure blocks, as it would probably be as dense as the blocks and take up less open area than rocks. what do you think?

#AskBRStv How do you all feel about cycling media before putting it in a tank, or using media (rocks, sand, ceramic media, etc.) from an existing tanks to speed up the cycle or "instant cycle" a tank? I have heard people swear by this as a method of getting at least some fish in the tank quickly, this would be great for those of us who don't like explaining to our significant others and house guests why we have a giant box of water sitting in our house with nothing in it.

So in the process of setting up a tank, have a tub of rock that's been curing (this is rock that has been bleached dead, so no breaking down of dead stuff) in a container for many many months. However I really want to build structures out of it using eMarco or some other product, now this requires the rock to be out of water and to dry out of water, so am I just wasting time keeping it in salt water? Will any bacterial colonies that have built up simply be mostly dead by the time my rock structures are finished?

The problem with the sand everyone face is because you take a too coarse sand. Take a sugar sand like the CaribSea Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand 0930 and you will never have brown stuff in the sand. After 10 years my sand is completly white when disturbed and I never used a siphon. Also, about water flow, wait until the biological film gets established on the sand and then you will be able to crank those powerheads.
