In episode 59 of Bullet Heaven, we took a look at the XBLA version of Ikaruga on the Xbox 360. We really love Ikaruga, and with the recent Switch version, we though it'd be neat to compare every home version of "Project RS2" to the most recent iteration of this amazing classic. The lack of a restart option in the menu annoyed me at first, specially while practicing single chapters, but I've found a "fix": In settings > extra > easy menu: ON! That gets rid off 2 selection screens, keeps your previous choices and makes it waaay faster and less tedious to try again by exiting to the main menu ;)

Just got the limited edition Data Disks black and white splatter vinyl with original artwork from Yasushi Suzuki and remastered soundtrack. It's a Xmas present for my brother as I got him Radiant Silvergun last Xmas and they are like brother and sister so very happy. I hope he appreciates it!

i wonder why Treasure hasn't released any other game on steam since Ikaruga's release. If anyone from Treasure is reading this please release your other titles on steam. We love your games :))

Because after 2012 the staff of Treasure completely collapsed, leading to a Famitsu article in 2019 where Masato Maegawa (the founder) states that he is the only remaining member. He's been trying to work on a new game since Ikaruga's release, but it's unclear whether it'll ever escape development hell. Other than that, the company proper is fucked once he retires.

Can you guys do an update on the PS4 version that just came out? I assume it's just another PC port but if it doesn't have the input lag it might be good.

I agree, the DC port is still the best. It's just feels and looks right. Fantastic overview, been sinking some time into the PS4 port recently it's made me love the game all-over again.

I have the digital version for Switch but I’m ordering the physical from Japan. Also just picked up the game cube version. Thanks for the great info on all versions. I haven’t had a chance to play on the game cube yet. Awesome!!

Thanks a lot for this video, very helpful as I was thinking between byuing the Dreamcast version or the Switch version. From what I understand it is still not perfect, but great enough to consider buying especially with the great price (10euros compared to 130 on Dreamcast).

Why did the devs remove the GC’s amazing practice mode where you could play Ikaruga’s stages at 50% speed? That was legendary, and was instrumental in my learning to perfect-combo Stage 1. I wonder why only the GC has it…

It would have been great. I don't know why they removed it, but if it were included in a more recent port (like Steam or PS4) it would have made them a little more tolerable despite thier slight issues over the DC version.

So thorough. Love it! I still have the mobile version on my Note 2 and Galaxy Tablet. Can’t remember the last time I tried it with a controller, but now I want to try again!

One of my favorite shooters, next to Touhou, Hellsinker, and more (seriously, I have so many favorites in this genre it is hard for me to remember them all). Have both the Xbox and PC version as well as played the DC version on an emulator.

Great video as always. By the way, while researching for it have you perhaps took notice of the different extras provided with each version, if there are any? Cause i have both the GC and the Switch version, and while the image gallery seems the same, there’s an extra Document section on GC that’s seemingly void on Switch, like there’s no text at all

Stay away from PS4 physical, unless you want to support easily the worst indie publisher that's somehow still around today. Peep the link in the description. You could get the Japanese version, but there are rumors that Pikii is also affiliated with Nicalis. We will not be reviewing it. There is no chance that the issues we found are going to be patched out: they have been there since Steam PC, and every subsequent version (based on PC, it appears) have exactly the same issues, years after the fact. Dreamcast is still the best home version to this day.

The part where you said the enemies disappear on level 1 I believe happens on all versions. If you don’t kill all the enemies fast enough in those areas, it will end it early with that transition since the pace of the level is tied to the soundtrack so the level has to keep going.

I know what you're talking about, but starting with the PC version, thay just suddenly "blink" out rather than being removed during the transition. They can still be caught on DC, GC and XB360, but PC and every version after has this error and it has bever been fixed.

As an owner of DC & XB versions, this is a tough sell. Portability is nice, but not with input lag. Hopefully it gets a patch. :/

I hope so too. I think may have something to do with the Bluetooth signal time combined with monitor lag. Maybe a Switch Pro controller would work better. Until then, the Pokken pad is dirt cheap and works very well.

Studio Mudprints u mean it only lags on the table with two small control? Can u use the two small controlls joycon with the small screen in the home thing and playing on the big HDTV?

There is input delay with any wireless controller regardless of Docked or tabletop, it's slight bet there regardless. Joycons work better than SN30 Pro, Wired in Pokken works better than all of them.

Has your opinion changed now that a Western physical release has happen a few months ago? Does anyone know if the game has been Updated/Patch or contain extra content (dlc) on the Game Card?

These days I play Ikaruga almost exclusively on Dreamcast. But I haven't noticed any changes.

I would most highly recommend the Dremacast version if you can swing it. Otherwise be sure to grab the PS4 or Steam downloads to support Treasure and not Nicals!

@Studio Mudprints Im getting the Hypergun physical version on Switch. I have a pretty solid PS4 Hori stick and am getting a adapter to be able to use my stick on the Switch. Do you know or have heard of being any input lag playing this way? My stick will be wired connecting to the adapter.

From what I'm understand most if not all methods are going to have a bit of lag on the switch, unfortunately. The joycons and pro controllers seem fastest. Anything Bluetooth is alsi just a bit too slow, and very noticeable.

No, Gamecube Conquest mode lets you practice any section of any cleared stage at half speed to get the chains right.

Pretty much anywhere. It's made by Hori to allow players to charge while playing Tabletop, but it doubles for a tate stand. But others also exist. I got ours at EB Games.

Man what I would do for other physical Treasure games. Even if I have many of their games on the older stuff, I'd still love to be able to play them on modern consoles. Treasure keeps licensing Ikaruga and nothing else.

I can get behind that. The color chaining in RSG is just insane. Hopefully we get a solid port for RSG for Switch at some point! And Bangai-O too, while we're at it!

Studio Mudprints Yeah! The fact that you *need* to play for score in order to stand a chance at the game is pretty much what makes it challenging and quite demanding (The only other game I can think of that heavily depends on score in order to beat it is Battle Garegga). However, it kinda makes beating bosses and stages feel like a great accomplishment! So yeah, a Switch (and Pc too, why not) port would be nice. More so if it means getting to see those nice Saturn cutscenes fully dubbed into English!

Does it ever bother anyone that there aren’t vertical shooters that aren’t fitted for home play? It’s difficult to use Tate mode if you don’t have specific hardware

There are all kinds! There are actually Yoko Vertical shmups as opposed to Tate Vertical. Games like Mars Matrix, Giga Wing, Radiant Silvergun, Soukyugurentai, Stahlfeder, AirGrave, Aleste, Zanac x Zanac, every Star Soldier game, and many, many more all use a 4:3 aspect ratio rather than a 3:4 like tate games do! Some even have dynamic "fullscreen" modes, like Gunbird and Battle Garegga that fill the screen but scroll with the player's ship. It can be disorienting, but it's a neat concession.

Ikaruga was my second digital shoot em up when i first got my Nintendo Switch (very happy day) my first digital was Raiden V which is a pretty kick ass game i could do without all the chatting though but yeah Ikaruga i have a lot of practicing to do if i want to attempt to get anywhere this game is a absolute beast

Crimzon Clover World Explosion, Radiant Silvergun, DoDonPachi Resurrection, Mushihinesama, Eschatos, and especially EspGaluda II. Add to that Star Hunter DX and Space Moth Lunar Edition, though they have some slight, but noticeable, noticeable input delay on Switch. Akai Katana is forthcoming too, and if it's as good as Deathsmiles allegedly is (which we haven't played but will as soon as it arrives on the mail, hopefully soon) it will be a must-play. I've been playing the 360 release lately and it's just an amazing, fun game.

@@StudioMudprints Though I heard NIS America has gotten the rights to the game from H2 Interactive while the Switch release is still handled by UFO Interactive, so they will be replacing the Steam version of Overkill as well as simultaneously releasing the Mikado Remix on PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Series X.

Don't buy the Switch version. Buy the PS4 or Steam versions instead. Avoid anything Nicalis publishes. If this has been patched, I haven't noticed any changes. DC is still best.

Yeah, seems that Ikaruga stands up the test of time and is ported everywhere lately, lol. Not only that, make that 6 versions when the PS4 version of Ikaruga comes out someday. Also, I find it kinda dull that the Switch version's price is $15, when its $10 on X360/X1 and Steam, but oh well.

Economies have fluctuated since 2014, so $15 isn't terrible. But yeah, $10 was an amazing price for the others.

On par with Switch, with the added bonus that Treasure themselves and not Nicalis published it. Unfortunately, this review happened before certain events at Nicalis, and have since changed our stance on the company; I'd avoid the Switch version at all costs, especially the physical one.

Between them, they are more or less identical but I'd go Steam, myself. better controller access overall.

All Xbox pads, all PS pads, all Switch pads, many, many, many USB pads... PC is the best platform to play many games regardless of the controller you prefer.

Maybe, since it can be used for Smash Ultimate later this year. But the Gamecube controller is terrible; I'd prefer Saturn controller support. *Checks to see if the SLS Saturn Pad works* Aww, it doesn't.

I'm probably just gonna stick with the Xbox 360 version of Ikaruga that I already have, considering the 360 is a shmup powerhouse and there is no problem with that controller

The original 360 controller...?? Hoo boy, that's debatable; it has a terrible stock D-Pad. We traded literally all of our first party 360 controllers for a set of four Hori GemPad EX controllers for that sweet, sweet D-Pad and wired input speed.

Yes it does. I use my Hori Snes-styled GameCube controller with the GameCube-WiiU adapter and it plays amazingly.

PS4 digital is published by Treasure. It's identical to this release. PS4 physical is published by Nicalis and its affiliates though. We recommend not supporting them due to their misconduct.

I figured that Ikaruga on Switch would at least get a 4.75 given that it is the best version of the game since the XBLA port. And yeah, the Switch is a fantastic console for shmups now given that TATE mode is so easy to access. I would say that it's already surpassed the PS4 as the best current-gen console for shmups, and by next year it'll have definitely surpassed the Xbox 360. I'm surprised that you never mentioned the PS1 though, especially since not only does it have a fantastic library of shmup exclusives, but some of it's arcade ports(namely DonPachi, DoDonPachi, and In The Hunt especially) are better than their Saturn counterparts(the last one has major issues on Saturn but runs absolutely perfect on PS1)

I guess you could say that since only the PC verison existed between the two, but it's really just an offline-friendly PC version variant with score upload times that are totally ridiculous. As it stands, the best version is Dreamcast for playability and Switch for eye candy and portability. It's too bad more versions don't have Conquest though....

DC is arcade perfect to Naomi though. Two totally different sets of arcade hardware. Better "Live" sound in Naomi and DC too.

Wired on switch adds input lag because signal is buffered through the dock adding another layer....it is the solution with the most input lag! if you want the least lag on switch use a wireless pro controller or in handheld mode.

Seems backward, but then again, so is the Switch in many ways. Pro controllers are too expensive tho. Literally no reason they should be 20 bucks more than a PS4 pad.

disappointing the switch one doesn't include online co op.. what a brilliant idea for a shmup. I was toying with buying it on the sale to get the HD version ( I have the original gamecube version) of the switch but i think i'll give it a pass.. Maybe if i get a decent price for my (mint) gamecube one i'll buy the switch one.

ok i watched the rest of the video.. will give it a miss.. so even the pro controller has lag? I don't like the pro controller d pad for platformers or fighters but i find it suitable for shmups. what about the hori d pad in handheld mode? Surely that would be ok as it's a brilliant d pad (truly).

The switch version is actually a sega Naomi arcade perfect port ❤️❤️💯

You are, unfortunately, incorrect. Only the Dreamcast version is a perfect Naomi port. There are errors with enemy waves, the music is not as clear and there is input delay in all versions starting with PC PC (PS4, Switch are based on the version found on Steam).

Studio Mudprints I’m just wondering why when Sega said that they had their sega Naomi arcade board up and running on the switch hardware perfectly and that they were gonna Port there Naomi games to it that this wasn’t arcade perfect

It isn't tho. There is no "live" generated music, and the enemy waves will clip out at a specific point in stage 1. Doesn;t happen on Dreamcast. I'm not going to say it's a terrible port, but it is far from perfect. Also, Sega did not port it. Treasure did.

Studio Mudprints And my other question to you is are all the Sega Naomi ports on the Dreamcast 100% arcade perfect? Because from what I was told the Sega Dreamcast was a literal sega Naomi arcade hardware for the home

Often times, the Dreamcast ports ended up better than arcade perfect, thanks to extra modes and sometimes even better fidelity. It's a lot like the Sega Titan Video, as it was identical in architecture to the Sega Saturn; Soukyugurentai and Radioant Silvergun are perfect-plus in that kind of way. Taito also had a board that was basically a revamped PSX, so G-Darius was also arcade perfect at home.
