Lead vocalist Ernie Sorrentino recorded this song with studio musicians. After "White Lies, Blue Eyes" hit the charts in the fall of 1971... an actual band was formed. Roget Pontbriand (trumpet, keyboard, backup vocals) joined Sorrentino with Joey Stann (organ, sax), George Ruiz (bass), and Mike Micara (drums). Pontbriand later went on to play with K.C. and the Sunshine band and Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music White Boy."

Lyrics:
[Chorus:]
White lies in her blue eyes
Goodbye is on the way
White lies in her blue eyes
Evil's the game she plays
Well, she's trying to tempt you
With her music and her line
Well, her lips look so inviting
And those sultry eyes
They get to shine
Oh, but look a little deeper
At all that come on stare
Then you might be able
To see what's lying there
It's those
[Repeat chorus]
Don't you ever
Let her get to you
The way that she got to me
Though the signs were plainly written
I just didn't want to see
But she could do most anything
If you give her time
A living testimonial
Don't make me color blind
There are
[Repeat chorus 4x to fade]

Apparently oldies stations have a very narrow playlist. You are right, this should be played as should hundreds of other great songs that are ignored.

On this day in 1971 {October 31st} "Whites Lies, Blue Eyes" by Bullet entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #98; and ten weeks later on January 9th, 1972 it peaked at #28 {for 1 week} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... The band had one other Top 100 record, "Willpower Weak, Temptation Strong"; it stayed on the chart for two weeks, peaking at #96...

Hi Ernie, Bullet came to our small town of Seafood De probably in 1972. I played in the warm up band for you all. We were a high school rock group that the disc jockey hired. We were in all of that night. It’s our one claim to fame! It was one of my greatest moments! And to cap it off you called me up about 10 years ago and we talked for about a half hour or so. Thank you again for your time.

I’m still in the same town where you played that weekend. Seaford De. It was a great time for our little town. I’m 66 now and jamming at times with my grandchildren! 😎. You called me and left a voice mail and said to call. I called back and we talked for awhile! I saved the voicemail for a long time and shared with my old rock Freind’s 😆. Nice to hear from you again!

Would you believe that back in the day on a near year-round basis the Russian Navy would keep a ship or two at drop-anchor off the coast of South Carolina for the purpose of observing ship traffic at the Charleston Navy Base? And would you believe that even today we occasionally get a letter from one of their sailors telling us how they couldn't wait to get on station so that they could tune their listening devices to 1250 AM WTMA CHARLESTON radio. Apparently it was their favorite music.

What the hell happened here?!! This song was NEVER played in the SF Bay Area! Today was the first time I heard it! It was on XM radio and if it wasn't for them I would have missed this classic forever. For one brief moment I was hoping it was a new group, but then I noticed I was on the 70's channel. It figures, all the great music came from that era. What a wonderful sound, something like Styx and Sweet mixed into one. I love it!

FINALLY!!! The opening chorus of this song has been going through my head for DECADES! I used to hear it on radio station KGHO from Hoquiam, Washington back in the day. I finally had to post a video of myself on Facebook a few minutes ago, humming the melody, and getting the lyrics kinda close. Within 10 minutes the mystery had been solved! I'm a happy boy!

You and me both Miro ! July 2022 in Panamá and I wake up today and sing those four words . I don’t do this every day mind you, but enough so that today I finally say to myself “I have got to look up that song, with those killer opening chorus that has been dancing in my head for DECADES!” The only thing that makes sense to me now - as I look back at my 10 year old self in 1971 - this must have been one of the first (?) radio hits to begin with such a powerful introduction . Other songs that immediately begin with vocals (think The Beatles “Hey Jude” or The Carpenters “Goodbye to Love”) did so very quietly, I think. If there was another song that BLASTS its vocal intro like this classic, I hope someone lets me know!

When the local oldies station, KISN/FM in Portland, played this song, it immediately reminded me of the opening riff in David Bowie's song "Bombers," which was also recorded in 1971. I mean, the similarity is really striking! I doubt Ernie Sorrentino was aware of DB at that point in time, so is it possible that Bowie-- who was famous for his encyclopedic knowledge of popular music-- heard "WL,BE" over there in England and copped the opening phrase?
@LordAmbrosia1
@LordAmbrosia1 11 ай бұрын
I'm also convinced that Bowie had been listening to Jonesy's Ricochet before writing 1984 (especially in the earlier, unreleased versions featuring mellotron), and he definitely stole part of the melody of Warszawa from Lord Randall by Chico Hamilton.

I'm sitting here flipping through the April 1972 issue of Hit Parader (as one does), and I think the lyrics printed there are more accurate than what is presented here. Some changes to consider: When she's trying hard to tempt you With her music and her wine When her lips look so inviting And those sultry eyes begin to shine Won't you look a little deeper Beyond that "come on" stare . . . . But she can do most anything If you give her time I'm living testimony Her love made me color blind

Harmonium - There's often discrepancies between lyrics written/published and what ends up on the recording. I guess only Bobby Flax has the answer, if he's even still living. To me, everything sounds the way it's printed above, except for the last stanza you posted. (I hear 'line' with an L and not 'wine') However, it DOES sound like Ernie S. is singing, "I'm living testimony her love made me color blind." But for now I will probably keep it they way it's 'officially' posted. Also... never knew the Letterman had a version. They change up a couple more words! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9lglpN4qr7NooU.html

Truly one of if not the best pop songs from the era. As I've read from a DJ's perspective: this was a '0 count' as there was no lead-in to allow them to talk you into the song. It's beginning was "White....". Great song. talent, and performance IMHO.

Love those blue eyes and I can see the evil hidden behind them. I loved this song. It got little air play in the Pittsburgh area. I don't forget good songs. Thanks for posting.

Oh hell yea. Luved this jam on WFLB 1490 AM as an 8 year old. I remember recording this on my brothers' portable cassette player. I placed the unit next to the radio speaker. Tried to time hitting the record button without getting the DJ's voice. haha. Still luv this jam today. Nice post. Thanks.

Great song; #1 song in Syracuse in late '71. This Bullet not to be confused with Bullet UK, an offshoot of Atomic Rooster.
