When I was a kid oh about 25yrs ago my dad showed how too replace those without removing the shift rod. He was a vw/porsche mechanic. But yes removing the rod allows more inspection

My bushing carrier must have been in really good shape because getting that new bushing to click was not easy. I could not get enough leverage to push it in with my fingers. I had to take a cut down drumstick and tap it in. :) so for any of you struggling, keep at it. It goes eventually. Also getting the shiftrod out of mine took a little bit. You have to be careful of the hard fuel line and the clutch pedal on the way out.

Having the same issue. I thought I had the bushing seated but when pushing the rod through it is def not seated. Going to give her a go again in the morning

@@Rickcsvdubs i ended up having to cut off part of the flange because my bushing carrier in the tunnel had a part that wouldn’t allow the flange on the bushing to seat.

Thanks for doing the video. Working a 68 sedan up out of a storage yard. When I get to the shifter part of the rebuild Ill order all 3 items. Nice work on re-engineering the parts.

You should paint the section that doesn't ride in the bushing.

I'm surprsed too. Weused to cut a little trap door somewhere in the rear luggage space behind the back seat so we could adjust the clutch from inside the car. But then again we also repaired the rusted floor pan under the battery using license plates, pop rivets and roofing tar, good times...

Awesome. Sudenly this shift bushing replacement procedure makes all the sense. Why that old plastic melts away, wrong grease? Dad's old Vdub wait for me.
