We have one of these Bundutop, can thoroughly whole hearted agree, marvellous unit. We also have add a room awning, but never utilised the wall material as of yet. We also run the 360° awning. I have added an awning led light to illuminate ladder at night (switched internally by switch mounter atop of aluminium enclosed power box), a switch to the centre roof light (mounted next to awning light switch, saves getting up to switch light off, stay snug between blankets), also atop of the power box we switched the provided 12v socket, this solely powers our 12v electric blanket (saves fumbling in dark to unplug plug blanket in) added a twin USB port for ph charging, added two by led light strips to aluminium uprights to provide reading light (individually switched at base of each light), a swivel bracket to the ceiling light frame that I've mounted a digital thermometer in, also holds a mobile phone for KZfaq TV viewing and the best mod yet, (in winter months) a inbuilt diesel heater that keeps the tent toasty warm on those very chilly minus nights around where we live/camp. My wife found the original mattress too firm, so we switched that out. This is now a true home sleep anywhere in the bush, just love, love, love our Bundutop to bits. ♥️♥️♥️

@@obtouring for anyone considering ideas I've added, I should just add, roof top fans and ceiling light are powered by same power cable, hence switching the ceiling light off disables the fans too. So, if you want to run the fans you need to switch ceiling light off at the actual light as per usual. However, there is an upside, again the fans can also be switched off from sleeping position, no need to clamber up to fan switches once settled on a warm sticky night. Awning light needs to be positioned so not to blind you when looking up ladder rungs at night, I positioned mine so it lights the rungs to our benefit without being in your face at the same time. Best of luck, enjoy.

Thanks! I've been seriously looking into one of there with the Bundusuite because of the framework & being in a bag like an awning.. It seems much quicker & stronger. I wish there was a model with a built in floor though. There is other little but important features missing for us like no floor & door in the end (instead of the corner, as that would work if we had our awning walls up) & of course with the tent, I had also heard about the lack of small mesh we need here in Australia, that worries me! Thanks for your honest review, I realise nothing is perfect but it's nice to hear info from those who have first hand experience & not just a salesman. Cheers!

Thanks heaps guys I was so close to considering this tent over the bush company one.. I was concerned about potential electrical issues that could prevent me from opening or closing the tent.. this issues you had plus the fact those windows aren't miggie proof is enough to concrete my decision to stick with the bush company tank tent I call it.. the alpha.. was really hoping for an alternative because of its weight and width being rather heavy and large.. thanks a bunch guys. Thank you for putting in the time to make this informative and unbiased review. I was wondering if you find it worth while getting the extra awning over the doorway? In my setup it would be positioned on the roof of the car, it looks as though you opted not to have it on your roof mounted tent. Thanks in advance!

I think it’s worth having, if anything it gives you a little more cover from the rain and sun. The walls for it on the other were quite heavy, we really didn’t use them as the weight of them bent the arms holding the awning out. Hope this helps.

What a detailed video. Thanks for your unbiased review. We are from South Africa and love seeing our countries mark internationally. We opted for the Alu-Cab Gen 3 R though as we were concerned about too many points of failure on the Bundutop. But the 360 views and overall roof hight is great. Another concern was the mechanical noise when you arrive at camp late at night or depart early morning. How have you experienced this. Keep up the great work and happy overlanding.

Understand your concerns re to many points of failure. Besides the limiting switch issue which was a easy fix, the tents been great. Was going to change over to a AX27 Bush Company rrt, however decided to stick with this. Yes we carry spares, however haven’t had to use the yet, thank god. Murphys law, you have spares all goes well 😄. So many opinions out there now. I know alu cab rrt is a good tent too, you won’t regret it.

Absolute perfect honest review of the roof top tent and also the added room. There is definitely a design fault with the added room and the rain coming in off the gutters of the roof top tent! We use the added room to store our clothes and as a change area and unfortunately water gets in and ruins this space. Also if the rain is coming in from an angle it can also enter through the two side openings. Do you guys have the bunduawn and if so what’s your thoughts on it? Cheers

could you put some sort of a channel on the hard roof to deflect rain so you dont get rain coming in onto your ladder? kind of helping the extended awning out
@obtouring
@obtouring Жыл бұрын
It could alleviate some of the problem, however there is still awning exposed that would catch water making it run down towards the ladder. We have fab up a system which has two clips with some cord attached to it, which loop over the latch hooks and lift the awning up above the ladder forcing the water to the edges, temp fix for now but works some what.

Loved the review guys! I ordered one of these earlier this week. Should have it in 3 weeks. Got the green canvas as i like my sleep ins and don't want the sun coming in waking me up compared to the grey canvas. I'm getting 12 volt solar panels fitted to the roof and i will be mounting it onto a custom box trailer that i'm having built as a firewood/camping trailer. I want the versatility of keeping my vehicle light and driveable while set up at base camp plus if i want to do hard tracks or the desert i can leave the trailer at home and take the swag. But this looks really comfortable and swags can be hard work especially when you are constantly moving and driving to a different spot daily. Which i do a lot. This is the perfect solution for that! Is there enough room to add an extra mattress like an egg carton topper? Also do you find the annex a worthwhile investment? Is it easy to set up? Thank you so much for sharing! Can't wait to get my Bundutop and use it.
@obtouring
@obtouring Жыл бұрын
Honestly the 100 mm mattress will be enough, unless you really like a soft bed then put the topper on. You won’t have any trouble fitting it on and closing the tent. The annex is worth it gives a little more shade and protection if raining, however the annex room isn’t, we have only used it once. It’s been a great tent and so quick to set up, just carry spares eg the diodes which you can get from jay car there like 50c each, fuses, and Dyna rope incase one snaps.

Really great content guys! I have a bundutop and am getting used to it :D On my camper I also have the bush company clam shell style tent and a hannibal roof top tent. The bundutop has its flaws but its really comfortable and it holds a 250W panel no worries. I noticed your XL Bundutop doesnt have a fuse next to the raising and lowering buttons, is there an exterior fuse? Thank you for sharing your experience its help me a lot.
@obtouring
@obtouring 2 жыл бұрын
Hi VIK, yeah larger tent is an older version, where you wire in a 15amp fuse or wire it up to a fuse block like we did with a 15amp resettable fuse. Other than that it’s the same. In some ways having the fuse on the outside of the tent could cause some grief if some one tampers with it.

Good video thanks. One thing that bothers me is the ladder particularly at night with the small steps. ARB have just released a new RTT “The Altitude” and the ladder on that has big deep steps and hand rails on both sides that fold down when stowed, so that’s one change I would look at. How do you find it in strong winds, does it retain its rigidity, granted you said the mini awning around it flaps a bit, but does the tent feel secure? Safe travels 👍
@obtouring
@obtouring 4 ай бұрын
The tent holds up well in strong winds, however putting it down in very strong winds is a challenge. We didn’t have any issues with the ladder or step size. The new ARB altitude tent looks amazing, I think it’s a well thought out design. It is a little more expensive than the bundutop and doesn’t have a wrap around awning, however has many other features to make up for it. That and the bush company ax27 tents are the only other ones I would consider for quality.

had ours for over 5 years, always open all 4 windows to close it. as we were shown when it was purchased. never have an issue with "ballooning" when closing in high winds. also installed a sail track on the roof section, I slide a foxwing extension awning into it and with a couple of poles and ropes , I have a rain free enclosure. plus can angle the run off in any direction I want, with the added bonus of the rain water collection. unless they have changed the mesh, I've never had an issue with midgies getting in.

Thanks, really helpful. No one else has mentioned rain tracking in or blowing in and dripping from the 360 degree awning under the added room awning which covers the 360 degree awning. Thanks for this detail. How disappointing! I am thinking of mounting a regular Bundutop on a Pod trailer and having a 270 degree awning on lifting struts that would lift the 270 awning to just under the Bundutop 360 degree awning that protrudes 300mm from the walls of the Bundutop. Do you think that would work in keeping rain off the ladder and covered 270 space, assuming all rain runs off the Bundutop onto the 270 degree awning. I’m the bottom edge of that 360 degree awning is 600mm from the base of the Bundutop when set up, so hoping the ladder entry could be via a window under the 270 awning. Any thoughts on this idea? Could it work?
@obtouring
@obtouring Жыл бұрын
Hmm I’m thinking that the issue here would be the metal struts at each corner of the 360 bundutop awning. They extend from inside the tent to each of the 4 corners externally. Does that make sense? It would also limit your head height a bit?
@surfinwaves4769
@surfinwaves4769 Жыл бұрын
@@obtouring thanks for responding. I wondered about them. OK, how about this …. In theory, it should be possible to position the Bundutop mounting structure at a height that would enable the fully deployed 270 awning (with side walls) to sit just under the 360 awning and those struts when the Bundutop is up …. Shouldn’t it? Could that height be measured ….. Next time you’re out camping, would you be open to measuring the height from the base of your standard Bundutop to those 360 awning struts please? No rush, just if/when it suits you? Is there anything else I’m overlooking? 🙏
@obtouring
@obtouring Жыл бұрын
No problem! We are constantly camping ATM! The struts are 67cm from the base. We measured to the point they extend through the tent. The struts do have a slight downward angle toward the awning corner. Hope that helps. I’m thinking your idea is doable. Can’t think of any other issues apart from head room. We have fashioned up a little strap that lifts the awning to alleviate the run off. Only issue is we haven’t been able to test it yet as it hasn’t rained for long enough! Happy to email you some pics if it helps at all as well!
@surfinwaves4769
@surfinwaves4769 Жыл бұрын
@@obtouring many thanks! Yes, interested in your solution please, in case mine doesn’t work. I think adequate head room for the 270 lifting awning is definitely possible, if the Bundutop mounting is at the correct height. however, the thing that may not work is enough space to enter and exit the window/s under the 270 awning as the mounting back bar of 270 awnings look fairly large and may take up too much of the window entry space.
@obtouring

@@obtouring great thank you for this response. I have read many stories over the years with chassis breaking / compromised with overloading Ute type configurations. Does your setup eliminate any potential weakness in the chassis configuration? I love what you have done and tempted to replicate your setup. Are there any changes you would make to your setup to make it even better? Cameron
@obtouring
@obtouring Жыл бұрын
The trick is to get the right suspension setup and not overload the veh, stay under you gvm. Lovels are the only ones that do a nationally recognised suspension setup. Pedders, arb, Tjm, etc weren’t nationally recognised. That may have changed though in the last three yrs since I did the setup. This important for insurance purposes. The only thing I would change is the canopy and tray size. Instead of a 1900 wide canopy and tray I would go 1800 and instead of 1800 long I would go 1650 or 1700 long. Just to be a little more compact. Also when loading or setting up your canopy up make sure all your weight is over the rear axle like, batteries, fridge, etc.
