See how our Hard Shell Bundutec Roof Top Tent held up after 12 months of use. [Tips included] Is it better than a soft top?
In this video, we'll be showing you a detailed walkthrough of the pros and cons we've had with our Bundutec Bundutop Hard Shell Roof Top Tent. What we love, what we don’t & what we’d change about it.
We purchased this Hard Shell Roof Tent after owning a few soft fold out roof tents. The major downsides to the soft top tents we owned was:
- we weren't able to install solar on top which meant setting up and packing down solar panels every time we camped.
- the hassle we found packing and unpacking the tent (especially in the rain)
After months of researching and planning, we decided on the Bundutec Roof Top Tent and haven't looked back since.
We hope this video has helped give you a more detailed understanding of how the roof top tent operates, tips if you're looking at purchasing and things to look out for.
Happy Camping Legends 🤙🏽

Hi Guys, great work on the review, just a few notes for anyone watching and yourselves. 1. The ropes do NOT go in those guides. They are wheels , they are not rope guides. Those wheels are designed to roll wherever they feel like it. Please do not keep trying to put the ropes in. 2. We now have stainless catches as standard . Otherwise, a great review! Cheers

Go the Bundutop rooftop tents. You young couple will just love it, enjoy life whilst you can. Our experience with Bundutop. Me & my wife are well past our prime, yet still want to be out & about, mostly utilising our Caravan, but this limits where we go. Googs Track, Tele Track, K'gari (Fraser Is) are the places we've love travelling to and staying at. I've threatened to taking our van to K'gari but in reality it's not happening. In 2020 we were going to Cape York, camping, yet the prospect of putting the Oztent RV3 up, sleeping on the ground didn't work for me, too old to be getting up & down off the ground so out I went and purchased a RV5, the additional floor space allowing two stretchers (bunks off the ground) creating the perfect setup, (so I thought) then came Covid, no Cape York but we did get to K'gari. Well after 2 nights the stretchers got left in the vehicle (hindrance in setup/packup and used to sleeping together) so back to sleeping on the ground, GRrr, not happy Jan. Well 2021 rolled around and the Cape was still calling us, so a RTT was becoming more viable. We looked at several configurations, I-kamper stood out initially, but then I stumbled across the holly grail of RTT's, Bundutop. I built a purpose made roof rack consisting of a flat base, but as we were losing our existing roof rack storage, (where we stored untidy gear, firewood etc.) I created a storage compartment forward of the Bundutop for small firewood, water hose etc. I created shovel, axe, ladder, rear awning and Bunduawn side awning (360 set up), mounts. We also have add a room, but that mounted directly onto the Bundutop shell. We only utilise awning (not walls) have to agree, it is an awesome option. On went the Bundutop and off to the Cape & K'gari. Over night sleeps have never been more comfortable, setup and packdown so simple as Bundutop has winch lift/drop, all bedding, pillows are contained within shell. No moister, no dust, not a complaint in the world, just love it. For the record, the Bundutop access ladder is a two piece configuration. Owners usually disregard them & purchase a telescopic ladder due to storage size. I on the other hand like the ladder, so I created an aluminium storage frame on top of the hard shell for it (storage resolved). This aluminium frame also houses our max tracs and solar panel. Outback touring is on our radar again, Bundutop reinvigorated us two oldies. Now, I can already hear people saying how do two old farts get up & down this ladder? I created an assistant pole/handle the locks into place on the purpose built roof rack, and this allows us to firmly climb atop and swivel aboard the mattress. We then have a firm post/handle to grasp and swivel from the mattress to the ladder, that's how. All problems can be resolved! Bundutop, Love It To Bits. Footnote: The overall foot print of the Bundutop is longer than a standard bed. With winter is upon us, I elected to install a diesel heater in one end of our Bundutop (at the feet end of our bed). This reduced our bed by 150mm, not an issue for us, but at minus -1.9 degrees one week ago, flicked the heater on, within 8 minutes it was 20.8 degrees inside. This allows us to comfortably dress in colder climates. A worthy addition, as desert mornings temps can be really chilly, we're ready for them frosty chills.

Can you tell me the name of the heater you installed please
@ianweal3081

@@rodturkmani2218Hi Rod. It's just an eBay diesel heater. Basically there is no brand. I elected the unit with a digital controller as this displays the time of day/night and provides a very dim night light within the RTT. Unit mounted at foot of bed, enclosed in long compartment with air intake one end & air outlet the other. Obviously care needs to be taken that bedding/clothing doesn't obstruct air flow when in use. The exhaust ducts thru base, 90° turn to draft out side/rear of vehicle with 45° bend to draft exhaust fumes away from vehicle and stop moisture ingress. Combustion air is also drafted from underside by 90° bend & provided air intake. Fuel was only issue, tanks provided are physically too large for space. I ended up purchasing a 2.5l diesel tank from ebay and mounted it in the storage compartment I created infront of Bundutop unit. Difficult location to fill, but 2.5lts provides a fair amount of use, as the small confines of Bundutop heat up quickly. 12v pickup directly from Bundutops 12v electrical wiring compartment behind aluminium cover. I mounted the digital controller against the Bundutop fan housing. Ran the wiring down upright as Bundutop do for light/fans. Hope this helps. I have utilised several of these No name No brand diesel heaters for various projects. They work extremely well.

The control cables are not designed to run between the strut rollers. The junction hub at the light is not central to the tent roof so they can't. It isn't an issue.

Hey bud, awesome review and I agree 100% with you guys it’s an amazing tent, we have been using it exclusively in some wicked weather and we have never been let down. Just one thing, I also kept putting the cord back into the groove of the pulley but after a visit to the factory I was told it’s designed to not be in the pulley, the pulleys help with the lifting and dropping of the roof. (Just for interest sake )

The fans look and sound like Server grade fans, their designed to move a lot of air, but as you said downside is noise, you could "upgrade" to a decent desktop 120mm PC spec fan from a decent manufacturer like Be quiet and you then could probably live with the noise...but it may not have enough airflow to properly exhaust the tent, might be worth replacing just one fan that way you have a "quiet option" and a full flow option even if its a little noisier if it does get too hot.

I really like it. I think I am going to get the black version to go on top of my Turtleback Getaway off-road trailer. It's going to be the perfect off-road camping setup I have researched thus far. Of course, a trailer and a RTT like this are expensive and not necessary to enjoy camping, but they make it so much easier and comfortable.

Hey guys, great review! Out of all the roof top setups on the market Bundutop and BunduAwn still seems like it’s the superior product of choice. Currently I’m trying to decide between the Bundutop or an all in one mini camper trailer. I’m very curious about the rest of your rig, it looks interesting, I assume it contains your camp kitchen and other necessities? I hope you can put together a video walk through of that as well, when you get a chance of course. Or maybe, just post a link to the manufacturer and if they are available in the United States. Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the feedback :) Glad you enjoyed it. We do have all our belongings inside the canopy! One side contains a pull out kitchen with sink, oven/stovetop, pull out pantry drawers and stand up 110L Dometic Fridge. The other contains our battery set up, hot water shower and storage space. At the very front we've fitted in 110L water tank. We also have a side awning and caravan annexe that sets up over the kitchen to have some privacy (similar to trailers). We ended up going with this set up because we've found it to be easier to pack down/set up but also gets you to more places being on the back of our 4WD. Plus - no extra insurance! ;) Would love to be able to share a link, but this was custom made. Jayden is a welder by trade so had it fitted to suit. Hope to share some more in the future! Happy travels & good luck with the set up!

Hey Jimmy! Jayden custom built this rack himself. So we saved a lot of money with him being a welder :) An idea : if you work out the size of the rack you’re looking for, you can head into a metal fabrication store to get it built up. The materials for this cost us : $300 & to get labour would be around an additional $500-$600 depending on the store. Hope this helps! Happy travels 👐🏼

Bundutec is available in the USA and claims a 36 inch (91.4 centimeters) interior height. At 5' 7" (170 centimeters) tall I'm 36" tall when sitting upright which means my head is touching the ceiling and that's not a comfortable feeling.....it would feel restrictive at least and claustrophobic at worst. I don't want to have to slouch forward or lean back to be below the ceiling! Can you confirm this 36" measurement of interior height from mattress to ceiling?
