Removing Piston Liners
In this video I remove the liners and stuffed up welding by having the amps too high but it will clean up ok. New welder and I just stuffed up on the settings so I did the screw driver trick to be safe. .
Bozo alert, lol.

My old man used to use that welding trick on wheel bearing races. I’d forgotten about it! I’ve never tried it, I’ve always been too scared I’ll muck something up 😉. Another great video Lance thank you!

I do it to the axle bearing cups on the Fergies too. I think I show that on the FE35 series.

Interesting how times have changed, i was all quite worried as i don't like damaging things and all the old mechanics around my place are like just whack with a hammer and piece of wood or ali if you have some. Great video though your has far been one of the best ones out there

Takes me back to my Ag Eng. training days - I think on these the liners were interference fit and we used to refrigerate them before fitting them so they would contract enough to be fitted. That was 30+years ago though, so i may be wrong. Thanks for a very informative and interesting video. Greetings from Wales, UK.

Great videos lance,just got a 135 to restore.We spotweld a long flat steel bar to the inside of the liner and leave it sticking out the bottom and tap it with the hammer driving the liner out.

Hi Lance, fantastic series - thank you!! on the main engine block, for cleaning after disassembly, you mentioned power washing, I also heard about a baking option that turns oil to ash and gets all the gunk out of oil ways and calcification out of water jackets etc. either way, what are the special steps to ensure oil ways etc are all clean and clear before starting reassembly ? Later you glass beaded the CAV pump housing, do you ever blast the block? If you could talk to cleaning methods in general it would be highly appreciated.

When I had my big workshop I had a hot wash for the big items but now with a good degreaser I pressure clean everything a couple of times. I find every oil gallery after the pressure wash and force brake cleaner through them with compressed air to make sure I have everything. I tap the threads for the main caps and cylinder head and make sure they are spotless as well. Just slow and thorough and everything will be fine with normal mechanics tools. You don't really need anything special.

Interesting. I guess I'd only seen liners driven out. Of course doing that requires a specific tool designed for the operation. Anyway, great series, Lance, I'm enjoying it immensely.

Sure makes me appreciate the wet sleeves in my TO 20. Once I made the pulling tool they came right out. Putting the new ones in was easy also. I'll be interest to see how the new dry sleeves go in. Just took the front end apart on mine and the cross bar with the bushing is cracked half way across next to the bushing. One good load in the bucket and down she'd go. I will get a new one with the bushing already in it and a matching pivot pin.No problem, just throw more money at it! HAh!

Yes the wet liners are easier at times. And dont worry about the money, lol.

I used that method on some Perkins 354 liners but they were a little thicker so it wasn't easy. They were also 9" long making a lot of friction trying to use my puller.

Hi Lance. Fantastic series. Saving them all as my Haynes manual. Do you need to do anything to flush the water jacket or do they not pose a problem normally? Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the next one.

If it was for a customer I would have it acid bathed etc but for my own use I will pressure clean it and possibly bead blast is as best I can.

I Hi Lance. I am most interested in this series as I am restoring a MF 135. The motor was seized caused by picked up big end slippers It appears the injector pump alloed fuel to dilute the engine oil.The crank was ok. it has done a lot of work , but is basically a very straight tractor. Cheers Ross

🇩🇰 Denmark I have normally success by slovenly heating up the complete engine block and afterwards filling dry ice inside the cylinders one by one. Then to tap from the crankcase side and the liner will come out. Installing the new liners same way although now freezing the liners night over or by the use of liquid N2 before installing.

Hi Lance. I known I've watched these videos more than once and should have asked first time round, but my 35 has chrome plated liners. Do they still make like for like in good quality? , i assume you can't hone them if you don't change the liner or it will damage the thin chrome? Ps , fantastic series 👏
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the chrome are available and no dont hone them. I havent had troubles with any aftermarket ones so I presume they are all ok.

Could you use a #15 oxy cutter tip to heat up a weld puddle , might give more control ? I used to do that on 6” pipe to straighten it , heat up a dot around 2” dia until it just started to form a weld puddle then quench with a wet rag .
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 5 жыл бұрын
Had not thought of doing that.
@ianbertenshaw4350
@ianbertenshaw4350 5 жыл бұрын
Bundy Bears Shed might be worth a try , got nothing to lose and you can always crack out the welder if it doesn’t work. If you have a set of guides wheels for the oxy it may help to control it a bit better than free hand . I was surprised how thin the liners are and if the new ones are that thin i would be shaking like a dog shitting razor blades trying to put them in !

Hi Lance some of the Perkins engines I believe have cast liners, others have chrome liners what do the 35x and the 135 have

35 has chrome liners, 35X and 135 have cast, on the 35 it is best to machine the block and fit cast liners as the chrome ones cause a lot of problems.

You have a lathe and mill, you could have made a puller to remove those liners. There are examples on KZfaq. Welding and chipping those liners out, make me cringe.
@BundyBearsShed

Yeah fair comment, but boy they get tight and I have stripped bolts trying to pull them.
@stevefuller1779
@stevefuller1779 3 жыл бұрын
You don't need to weld, if you make your tool carefully it is easy to chip them out, but you don't want to damage the block, I do lots of 35/135's for a living and I always chip them without causing any damage.
