OG Marathon was a boomer shooter with heavy sci-fi horror influence, kinda like Doom if it had System Shock flair added to it. How this has anything to do with comic-style heroes is completely beyond me. They had a franchise that would go perfect with comic style heroes: Oni. An anime style sci-fi third person game.

I don't know much about the game, but the setting feels perfect for a Doom genre type. Third person shooter with crazy fast movement as you rip and tear through aliens would be perfect, but nope. You really can't shove a store or battle pass in that so Bungie chases the live service trend.

Specially with boomer shooters having a boom (heh) right now. Ultrakill, Boltgun, Mullet Madjack, hell even Doom Eternal. They're all doing great commercially and critically. It's clear current audiences, even young ones like the whole genre so why would they waste their time in some random ass fad instead of just embracing Marathon's original genre. If they made one good single player boomer shooter they'd probably make some quick easy money and fuck it, if they really want a live service game to get a bunch of Season Pass money make it a roguelite like Roboquest but with a huge budget, that hasn't been done yet.

@@BeastiezCyZthere have been many copies though. Apex is a hero shooter as well and is pretty strong fanbase. The annoyance in hero shooters is that 1. It's limiting in customization and variety 2. Geared heavily towards monetization. You'll have to buy heros and skins for them if you seek variety in looks or play styles. 3. The market is saturated and unless they offer an experience you can't get from other extractions or hero shooters without charging players an arm and a leg (bubgie is clearly desperate for revenue so over monetization with a barebones experience is probably what you're gonna get here), all this trend chasing effort would be for naught when they could've spent precious time on something more original or interesting.

the difference is is that theres at least some soul in 343 - that was unfortunately fucked over by the fact that the executives are absolute assholes who shaft their devs - and they can at least make some good improvements along with an actual intelligent *new* leadership. This was also helped by the fact that HALO: Infinite's core gameplay encapsulated the orginal feel. Bungie has both an incompetant leadership and pure greed in their eyes for this game. It was marketed as 'the ultimate live service' and is turning into a hero/extraction shooter, while also completely going against the original Marathon's feel and idea. The core gameplay must be timeless to be able to save this game.

I expected an epic space drama not constrained to the xbox eco system. I loved that they gave microsoft the halo reigns, they stated they were done, and i loved reach. it was a good high to leave and start something fresh. D2 stagnated because all the creative vision was lost. They resorted to just pumping out the same content instead of innovating. The Bungie OG's were notorious for being very picky with their games, working meticulously to get the systems right. Marty O Donell would literally change entire level set ups to fit his music more. Thats why halo, marathon, d1 felt so magical. It was one whole package. They had their vision and wanted to bring it to life. When they were all fired 1 by 1, bungie was left stagnant.

They can add so much more things, many more weapons, vehicles, game modes. I truly think its a great time for an arena revival.

They are moving away from the free range of customising your character to the company decides for you because what we need is more player control taken away not given. Hero classes is what these scummy companies want as they can monetise the skins easier for insane prices, people will be less likely to pay £20 to £30 for a single bit of armour like in Halo Infinite where if it's a "whole new model" they are more likely to pay that price, it's just more lazy stuff on the developers side that makes them the most money, this is what the whole goal with these anti consumer games are, it's a constant evolution of trying to push and find more ways to do less effort, less quality and content yet make the most money, they will always find the cracks and at some point will have games be at the point you spend more then your entire life will ever make to play the game and access it's content, and yet people would still make really bad excuses like "It's only cosmetic" or "You don't have to pay" then scratch their heads blaming the people they said this to when they don't play the game and it starts to die. I guess people just prefer to be ripped off with bad games then have a good fun game they can afford and is consumer friendly, but then again there are people who enjoy being beaten and abused so it's probably a kink to have daddy multimillion dollar company treat them like shit and milk them.

I would accept a hero shooter extraction if everyone can do the exact same thing except some characters might have like proficiency bonuses in specific armor and weapon types. Like not a huge boost bust something like holding breath for sniping for 5-10% longer. Or some characters can wear heavy armor without a 5% stamina drain. I assume itll be like use Hero A because hes slightly better with your playstyle over Hero B. But as Hero A you extract with gear that makes Hero B better so you switch. Then you unlock Hero C and even though they are weaker, they are PERFECT for your player style. But then Hero D comes along and they might be the weakest, they have a specialization in having the biggest inventory and can extract several times more gear than other heroes. Hero D will be the worst at extraction inventory space but be an ABSOLUTE MONSTER in combat. So you end up building squads for different scenarios. You are playing Solo? stealth extraction hero. Or solo balanced hero. Or Solo combat and survivalist. Honestly this could be really good depending on what you want to play. You dont have to collect all the gear to fufill a play style but can do that by just picking the hero. I can see in another game someone finally creating a specialized stealth sniper build, but then when they die they lose their build and get pissed. But in this game you just pick that hero and no matter what happens even if you suck in that style of play, you can STILL play that kind of role.

Bungie's strategy is so ridiculous. Total misunderstanding of consumer wants, chasing trends. Complete mismanagement of their IPs. Whoever's making these decisions should be embarrassed. Final Shape will not meet expectations. Not even close. Nobody wants to buy £40 dlc for a 7 year old game. Constant pay walls, confusing monetisation, and dlc delivery. They've done nothing to make new players feel like they haven't missed out, what's the point in starting something at the back end. When you've missed 7 years of context. Marathon won't deliver either. The market is over saturated. They should focus on a new Destiny game. Release a brand new game, with smaller, faster dlc releases every 6 months. Accompany 'free' dlc and patch updates akin to Valhalla for Ragnarok. But smaller, a new dungeon, a new quest chain, a new cosmetic, small stuff.

Not just because I genuinely enjoy it,not because it's free, but for the last year or two we knew when XDefiant was announced, then shown to be an arcade fps hero shooter, then released that through and through it was truly a hero shooter. But the difference is that because it's fundamentally an arcade shooter + hero shooter,it actually works in their favor. The factions themselves are straight from well known ips. I myself as well as others own or still play the older games,so I like using those factions (even if it's not the main characters of those ips) . But Bungie, apparently making a hero shooter seems oddly timed. I'm sure half of the people who saw Concord were also uninterested or somewhat intrigued. I'm not making any excuses, just being honest in terms of recent announcements and brief reveals of what's next for "gaming". Obviously shooter games, primarily fps more so than 3rd person, are often the most saturated, though it seems nowadays people are starting to get fatigued over extraction/hero based shooters. I'm neutral on this, but I can see clearly how some would be invested while others could be against it

What makes bungie think that a marathon hero shooter is gonna move anything? Heard about this a few weeks ago. 30 years of forums discussing this games complex story. A genuinely niche game to be sure, but one with a unique tone that, to my knowledge, has not been done well since. From the first trailer, this tone appeared to have been thrown in the toilet purely by the art-style. However, I still held out hope due to how it handled it's promotional material similar to how uncovering and discussing the narrative was handled 30 years ago (albeit not perfectly the same due to the differing locations, time, in universe factions, and the place our IRL internet is in). I was excited. If this is true, and it has moved completely away from the gritty tone and complex topics, as well as the perfect game genre it could have been in (arguably better than the kind of genre it was before), the game is dead. I am not calling it here because it is unknown if any of this is true. But my hope is already dead. edit as I should have watched the whole video before ranting but was an idiot as per usual: As a Hunt Showdown fan, and a fan of Marathon. If the game was set on board the abandoned Marathon with the industrial clutter and sound reliance that Hunt has, and had the same maze like corridors as the old games, pairing that with Phor and Sph't remnants roaming around as genuine threats that might require cooperation with enemy players to outwit, evade, or defeat... that would be peak gaming. I would empty my pockets for 7 copies for me and all of my friends.

I think this game has a potential for way more mass market appeal than people think. I don't think this is about getting destiny or extraction players in, I think its more about having great marketing and getting a lot of people who just play fps games in. If they get all the streamers who play "big flavor of the month fps game" whenever one comes out, you get a massive playerbase at launch from the viewers (assuming f2p, no pay to win, good anticheat and the game being generally fun). A lot of people play a little bit of multiple shooters, and a general consensus between a lot of people i know is that they're mostly looking for a new main game, to jump off the sinking ship of whatever they're currently playing the most, find something that hits just right. Extraction is a very under developed genre, if you don't want a cheater infested experience with realistic graphics, there isn't really a shooter game. Many people write off the entire genre because tarkov failed to get mass market appeal, but it was always going to. Gritty, realistic, military shooter games are often niche by design. Doesn't mean that the genre itself is bad

The few early comers would get on early and do some strikes, once the full gnag got on we would run raids, and custom 3v3s in pvp it was so much fun, so many laughs and moments spend on that game. Then they ended Destiny 1 and released Destiny 2. I was so invested, I had teachers give me homework in advance and told them I was going on vacation when it released so I could skip school and grind the game. After a month I stopped because all my friends have left. Due to, not wanting to restart, wanting random rolls back, wanting to go back to D1 to do the fun raids and everything. I was so bored playing alone that I left, and from time to time I comeback and play the new campaigns and laugh at the content creators and everything else. But after D1. I believe roughly 1/3rd of the community left... and never looked back. The game has been on a decline ever since. Ik it has had its peeks, but I think that is where it all began.

As somebody that use to play Destiny 2 every day, Bungie is in a bad spot right now. They've gone downhill, and its unfortunate because The Witch Queen expansion was really good. But with how boring Lightfall was a lot of people have left the game. It makes sense that they're changing Marathon's direction because I'm sure its easier to develop now, and Bungie NEEDS a game to bring in money since Destiny 2 is "done" after The Final Shape being released in June.

I will add, as a Destiny player, I have zero interest in a hero shooter. I was intrigued by the original direction of Marathon, I was willing to give it a shot. But I have absolutely no plans to even try Marathon now.

Goddammit, first Marvel Rivals, then Concord, now this, how many of these shooters are gonna keep coming? We don't all have endless time to play these.

I was genuinely STOKED to play Marathon as an extraction shooter. It truly felt like Bungie was set to revolutionize the extraction shooter genre like they so often do with their previous IPs. I’m so intensely dissappointed.

how about making marathon into a single player doom style game like the franchise started as....but i guess that doesn't extract enough money to keep the suits happy
