this is exactly how each bunkai should look like! no fancy additional moves, no hardly recognizable techniques: just clear explanation of essential steps a given kata consists of.

It is a historical fact that the students of Funakoshi (and most Japanese Karatekas) never bothered to learn the actual techniques or bunkai but rather learned the sport version Itosu introduced to convert Karate into a sport for physical education. Look at the videos of Taika Seiyu Oyata to understand the original applications.

So true, now some Shotokan Practitioners are realising that the basic Bunkai they are demonstrating is a waste of time.People like Patrick Mc Cathy Sensei and others has exposed that.

This is kihon bunkai.. Nice demo of kihon bunkai.. I think these sensei are leading sensei of JKF (or any Japanese association.. I'm not much aware of Japanese karate associations).. But, I believe the people who commented bad about this bunkai knows much more than these sensei.. So, these sensei has to go to them to study karate :(.. lol

That's because they are severely misunderstood in Shotokan and have been changed for aesthetic purposes. So you could say they were illogically redesigned. The old versions worked for hundreds of years before they ever landed in Japan. There's a good reason why most Okinawa's Karate masters of old became legendary, they never lost fights. Their katas were brilliantly designed, they understood them well, and they practiced them constantly. Shotokan "fixed" something that wasn't broken.

@soparamens I was so so saddened when I saw senior senior Shotokan member performing bunkai in such a way. This is an extremely basic version of demonstrating kihon kumite and is no longer in vogue. However, you made my day by referring me to the other page where they do a great at bunkai oyo (practical application). But there is a difference between oyo & kata, there were so many comments stating that the person on the other page had poor form doing bunkai, etc.

unfortunately the real bunkai lost it's way from Okinawa to Japan. The linear techniques and the simplification of shotokan style had this consequence. 95 % of karate practitioners don't know what's the meaning of kata. I think I 'm one of them :)

@Hikiwake10 Excuse me, the reason books are written is so that you don't have to travel around the world. Traveling just becomes an option. The writers of my sources are acknowledged as credible historians both in Okinawa, Japan and the U.S. They have their sources and bibliography listed in the book as well, so others can do their own research to verify correct info and further study of the material. What informational books do you read?

Shotokan concentrated on sparring using techniques more akin to fencing/kando in terms of timing and footwork adapted to Karate stances. That's why Machida uses the timing and striking method of Japanese Karate but not the grappling with nerve striking method of the Okinawan versions .

@Hikiwake10 Among "books" I mentioned, written by Westerners and Orientals alike: Patrick McCarthy, martial artist and historian who lived Okinawa and even visited China to follow the history of original Karate and its ties with Kung-Fu. Highly regarded by many Okinawan masters, such Soshin Nagamine, founder of Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu as an expert practitioner and walking Karate encyclopedia. How about Harry Cook? Historian who precisely documented Shotokan history?
@Bassai
@Bassai 14 жыл бұрын
@Hikiwake10 If you know so much about Shotokan history just because you are in Japan, name one Shotokan kata which came from Naha-te, if you know what Naha-te is. Also, who taught Funakoshi the kata. I got that answer from reading Funakoshi's book translated to English...
@haffoc
@haffoc 13 жыл бұрын
@niseikenpo Sadly, this is true. Historian Harry Cook reports in his history of Shotokan that Itosu did not teach the bunkai for the kata to any of his students. Thus, Funakoshi did not know the bunkai and all his students have had to make them up. Unfortunately for those who came after them, their efforts are strained and unrealistic.

@Hikiwake10 Oh Please, I know who are in these videos. That's Osaka Sensei performing "Omote" bunkai. Omote bunkai are obvious, straight forward interpretations of the kata. Ura bunkai are alternate / hidden meanings of bunkai. Okuden bunkai are secret meanings, almost synonymous to Ura bunkai, depending on the teacher. I studied under Mori Sensei, JKA NY. Also, Crevani Sensei, Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu, NY, Gorai Sensei, Kyokushin, NY and now I practice BJJ, Matt Serra's Long Island.

@soparamens It's "unrealistic" because it simply demonstrates that each move in the kata has a combat related application. It's safe to assume that the intention of this video was not to go into the advanced and reliable techniques, simply to ingrain that the practice of kata is not, in and of itself, a worthless endeavor.

@Hikiwake10 The word martial arts come from two words: Martial, comes from Mars, the Roman God of War, which points to subjects related to war, such as fighting. Art, as everyone knows, relates to expression or communication. So, the word Martial Art pertains to any subject, sport or not, as related to war or fighting. Boxing, be it a sport, is related to fighting and qualifies as a martial art. So does Greco-Roman wrestling. Kendo, for example, is both a sport and martial art.

Most of the Shotokan kata's are illogically designed. Some techniques combinations are good, but there are also a lot that don't make any sense. To make the bunkai of the kata work, you have to adapt them strongly. I think that the reason the kata are so as today, comes from a combination of secrecy and misinterpretation. Teachers sometimes kept secrets from their students, and students didn't do their homework always right.

What specific point of kata and karate is this demonstration missing in your opinion? I agree, most of this bunkai is simplistic and ridiculous, especially all of the blocking with no counter or pre-emption, but you make it sound as though all kata has a deeper point beyond that of solo practice.
@DrewOchsner
@DrewOchsner 11 жыл бұрын
Shotokan merely resembles the original karate of Okinawa. When Funakoshi took it to Japan they loved it, as a form of physical exercise. For this reason the bunkai was not taught. Names were changed to be easier for the Japanese to learn and pronounce. Kata movements and stances were changed to be more aesthetically pleasing to them with no regard for the intention of the kata or for effective martial application. It became to them an exercise and a sport. This is NOT the Karate or Tode of old.

Não é renegar o passado mas entender que o que foi ensinado está, infelizmente, errado e não interessa se foi o Nakayama ou um mestre altamente renomado que falou ou demonstrou, o errado é errado independentemente de quem fala ou faz. this is nothing more than a coordination drill .everybody searches for the elusive "original bunkai" which doesn't exist as no interpretation can be considered the one and only true interpretation .different experience and depth of knowledge by different sensei means different bunkai and even those are subject to henka or variation.If this is the only bunkai he knows then his knowledge has very lttle depth.

@Hikiwake10 Whether BJJ originated with Judo or Jujitsu (the forerunner of Judo) is not the point. Its a martial art which holds no secret teaching withheld from Westerners. And I know Maeda (count Koma) trained in Kosen Judo. The origin of Muay Thai is also irrelevant to the argument because we are talking about "secrets" being withheld to Westerners; Muay Thai techniques are so simple to learn, what kind of "secrets" from the art can be withheld? None.

Very nice performance - BUT, I'm not a fan of attackers just walking away or stepping back. As it's mostly agreed that there are no hidden moves in kata, this to me, must mean the application is incorrect?
@matbroomfield
@matbroomfield 12 жыл бұрын
I think that you would be greatly led astray if you take this as a definitive bunkai for bassai dai - it ignores chunks of the kata, and assumes that the attacker is an idiot. At best, this is the omote applicaton - the superficial bunkai, but for deeper (ura) bunkai look up the videos of John Burke or Iain Abernethy.

@Hikiwake10 Don't get me wrong, I know the ugliness of Japanese dojo politics and its ties to racism, but Okinawans, like Thai people are not racist. As a matter of fact, despite Funakoshi and Mabuni being accepted as Karate sensei in mainland Japan, Okinanwans were still looked down upon by Japanese during WWII. Read about the history of the US invasion of Okinawa and what the American soldiers discovered of how the Japanese were treating Okinawan refugees.

@Hikiwake10 Look up Patrick McCarthy's book."Bubishi: The Classic Manual of Combat". Read how he traveled to China and talked to and trained with famous masters of Fukkien White Crane, the original Kung-Fu style where most Naha-Te forms come from. that is not real bunkai. first, it does not mimic ANY kind of real attack. no one will EVER attack you in zenkutsu dachi stepping in with an oyi zuki. second, do you think someone is going to be so intimidated by you blocking one of their punches that you will be able to turn your back on them without counter-striking to block a punch from the other opponent you saw with your second set of eyes behind you? kihon bunkai like this is a waste of time because it is completely unrealistic.
