Agreed. Great sense of humour. And hes also great at clarifying a lot of the nonsense you see in tutorial videos. Much like Lee MacCormack eg scooping with feet.

I worked for a bike shop years ago, and had to sell my old Jamis XLT 2.0 when I moved into an apartment with my wife. I hadn't ridden since then, until last spring when I bought a brand new Stumpjumper, and I'm working my way back into cycling. I'll be 57 in August. I've watched every video from both seasons, and eagerly await Season 3. I did manage to get the front end off the ground a little last year, without trying to lift the front end off the ground, which is what I used to, a long time ago - and of course, that never worked. Looking forward to putting all of these tips and tricks to the test!

i am old, over 60, i learnt to bunnyhop on a road bike with clipless pedals i haven't ridden a bike for nearly 15 years until recently. i just bought a hardtail as my trek is nearly 25 years old. I think I am too old to learn to do it properly, so why can't I just use my bad habits from the past? PS thanks for the videos Ben by far the best learning series on YT

One tip from me: Wear some protection on your shins. Sooner rather than later you WILL hit them and it is pain. If you don't have dedicated shin pads, then anything works. I use old knee pads on my shins when I try to learn the hop

My goal for 2023 was to learn how to bunny hop, and on 30th of December while some friends were watching I got my first proper bunny hop! Now I'm trying to do it all the time when riding around the city, hopping off the sidewalks etc. I still need to get the timing right and the tip for lifting the front end higher is golden. Hope you all learn new skills this year!

I watch your vids and related stuff during my work hours, I just got back into bikes after 15 years and am trying to catch up. Thank you for this series it's really helpful and gives the watcher a push to just do it.

Thank you Ben and PB crew! After rewatching season 1 last week I literally immediately went out and KOM'd a popular downhill trail in our area and have been posting much faster times (2 3rd place all time) on other segments so far. I am 42 and have been riding for about 8 years so I am not a newbie and would consider myself solidly above intermediate level. I would recommend these vids to riders at all levels to brush up on things they may already know. The braking and cornering vids have made the biggest impact imo. Remembering to let off the brakes just before the peak of the corner is game changing!

Great vid! I still think that the big reason people struggle with bunny hops is that once you’re familiar with the move, it doesn’t really ”feel” the way the instructors talk about it (to me anyway). It’s tricky to teach but this vid is as good or better than any other ones! I’ll admit that plain old practice, experimenting, and doing some video of myself were the most important things that still help me keep improving.
@tylerbruce5731
@tylerbruce5731 Жыл бұрын
Yeah thats right. A LOT of tutorials/instructors do not correctly talk about the movements. And the key is the "athletic movements". All good sports instructors refer to athletic movements not outcomes/results of athletic movements. The athletic movements used for bunny hopping are the same as manualling are the same as jumping. And those movements are the row, anti-row and you can also include the hip hinge and to a lesser extent the squat. I struggled with jumping when I kept trying to "compress" my bike/suspension. Which is actually a result/side effect of rowing/anti rowing. Once I understood this I was able to jump.

Ben, thank you for the effort you put into these education videos. Well, you and the whole film crew! I've definitely improved my hopping -- it helps practicing on a flat asphalt (tarmac) path over every crack and stick as my kids ride ahead. They wonder why I'm so tired after... 🙂Still only half-humping the bar, though! Time to make it more aggressive.

Buutttt Beeeenn 6:31 This was a changer for me. It does make logical sense. Trying to piece three moves together to bunny hop is way more complicated than just compressing the front and then “humping” the handlebars. Thanks @pinkbike and @bencathro also Sir John of course.

While I usually ride with clipless, I do enjoy spending the winter on flats and brushing up on skills like bunny hopping without being able to cheat (and I usually ride bike parks on flats). I learned on flat pedals 40 years ago (feck, I'm old...), so the muscle memory is still there, but sometimes it takes a few minutes for it to come back to me. It's hard to convince some (most) of my friends to ride on flats and sometimes look at me with dismay how I will swap between them almost randomly.

You mention that a trials bike will be easier to learn on, but it depends on the bike. Competition bikes, which have super long wheelbases, and super long stems and bars, are extremely hard to bunnyhop. Street trials bikes can bunnyhop fine though. Of course, this probably doesn't matter here though.

Hey Ben, as a 6 foot 7, 155 Ibs rider. (200cm I believe) what particular riding pants do you have? Or which ones have you ridden with have the longest? Is there any specific brand I should be looking for? I’m currently running with the Endura MT500’s, and they are getting a bit on the small side. I suppose if I was at least a large instead of a medium, that would be easier.

So does it mean I have a problem with my bike? My new frame that requires 160mm fork but I put my 130mm fork temporary and that fork have rebound issues which stucked in fully open. When I Bunnyhop I don’t get the pop really well I don’t know if the reach are just to long for me or the fork just make the bike feel longer because the front of the bike is lower and also I do BMX so my Bunnyhop technique is dialed and I can do Bunnyhop on my past bike which is a XC bike that have short reach and short chainstay

How high you want to bunny hop depends on what you're trying to get over on the trail. If you bunny hop excessively high you will only be wasting energy

I can assure you that you dont want to use your max height on a trail since the preload feels so much like your falling of your bike backwards. Atleast for me my bike is almost perpendicular to the ground (60cm bhop)

how high u wanted a bunny hop on enduro bike? it's heavy, its not a bmx or dirt jump bikes. 1 - 2 feet is enough for a chill fun ride/tech section. plus with the help of launcher/ steep kicker i think its enough, we're not grinding some handrail on the streets. peace..🤝

Awesome vid, only thing I differ is about learning to get the back wheel up. Learning to push your body forward to pick the wheel up helps to understand the movement when trying to bunnyhop, also the correct technique of pressing the pedals backwards with the feet really helps to get the bunny hop higher than if you don’t know the technique. Many of my students have an easier time bunnyhopping after they have learnt to pick the back wheel up from the ground ;)

good video, but the thing about you having to learn on flats is just not true. Yes it is easier to get bad habits if you take shortcuts with clipless pedals, like pulling the back wheel up but its totally posible to learn on clipless pedals. I did and i can bunnyhop on flats too no problem.

Another KZfaqr by the name of Lee likes bikes spoke about a rider's RAD and how the distance from the bottom bracket to the center of your grips dictates whether or not your arms will be bent or straight during a bunny hop like you mentioned. It's such an important piece of information that often gets overlooked

As much as I love what you are doing Ben and how, this time I deffo cannot agree with the feet not lifting the rear wheel part. Scooping up the back end with your rear foot is essential part of the right technique and part of the reason why you should be learning it with flat pedals. Other than that, top notch vid as expected 👍
