Personal pet peeve in the industry is how drysuit gets taught. Thank you, Achim.

Great point here. This makes even more sense when you dive CCR, you don't want to start managing 3 different volumes, so better to inflate as less as you need the drysuit - just for confort.

This is exactly the way l learned to dive a drysuit 👌 I use both bcd for buoyancy and the drysuit for the squeeze and confort

Thank you for your video(s), really appreciated! The best scuba channel on KZfaq. When I dive drysuit with single tank (Steel 12x232) configuration, I am correctly weighted to such a degree that just putting some air in my suit to offset the squeeze makes me neutrally buoyant - hence I don't use the wing for anything else than on the surface. Technically speaking - this is controlling my buoyancy with my drysuit isn't it? So is that a problem according to you? Isn't the problem occuring only when people are overweighted so much that they need to put in more air in the suit than what's needed?

Hi Murat - not at all - thats EXACTLY how my setup works - which means that you dive a very well balanced rig - perfect. unfortunately most divers out there use too much weight and have to compensate that with a lot of lift in the BCD :-( Take care
@brettmhatch
@brettmhatch 3 жыл бұрын
@@CoastalDevelopment A 12x232 holds about 3.5kg of gas. Assume that you consume 3kg of gas throughout the dive, meaning that you exit with 30 bar. If you are neutral with an empty wing at the start of the dive, then at the end you will be about 3kg underweight,. Therefore, I would expect you to need enough extra gas in your wing and/or drysuit at the beginning of the dive to offset 3kg of water, which is about 3 liters. So perfect weighting would imply about 3l in the wing when you are neutral with a full tank (maybe plus an extra liter or so for some wiggle room). Do I have that right Achim and Murat, or have I misunderstood something?

@@brettmhatch you are right, of course. I absolutely need to put a little more air in at the start of the dive but I don’t find that unmanagable / too much air in the suit.

100% agree. As well as limiting the movement of the gas bubble, a wing or jacket is designed to vent exactly as much gas as you wish, easily and over a wide range of body position. It may have as many as 3 dumps as well as the inflator. A drysuit has generally one exit, that valve has to be your highest point and precise metering is more difficult. Especially diving with twins or multiple cylinders you will be very negative to start with but need to weight for the end of the dive when you'll be 4, 6 or even 8 kg lighter. You don't want all that buoyancy in your suit!

Grate video with some good solid points. I was thought that way 02:15 and it was in 2020 and it fealt a bit strange. Though the instructional material stated that "with experiance one could start to combine suit with BCD"...but then the diver has already developed certain habits that can be hard to brake.

I would also add that a drysuit doesn't expel gas very quick in case on any particular issues such as un controlled ascend where you can quickly deflat a bcd much more quickly

Think you should re write the padi book as it states you should forget your wing or jacket and just use you dry suit… that’s how I’ve dived for years but after how you have explained it your way make way more sense! My trim in the water diving as my dry suit as my bc was always bang on but I will be diving your way from now on Thank you for your advice

You are correct Achim, not that you need to hear that from me. Funny story: I bought my dry suit in Seattle, WA on a business trip. I got it on sale, and it was a stock size which fit perfectly (I was lucky). I had already been researching drysuits, and after buying my dry suit I was in another dive shop a few days later. I figured since these people dive dry all year round I thought I would ask some questions. So I asked the guy working there what was the deal with buoyancy, and did you use the wing or the suit or both and he said to use the suit. I was a little bit astonished but then again I have read on scuba board and other worthless forums that this is almost a political topic. There are people that do it this way and that way. Luckily when I took my dry suit training at Stuart Scuba and I was trained correctly. I only use enough air in the suit to take off the squeeze. If I ever had to takeoff my gear under water I would not go bolting to the surface.

Hi Achim. I have been looking for a guide to share on the correct way to use a dry site auto dump. My understanding from my early days of diving is open it fully to descend then fully close it at the deepest part of your dive ,fill for comfort and squeeze compensation then open it until a small bubbles trickle out. Then you don’t need to alter it for the rest of the dive it will auto dump on ascent and stop venting when you stop at your deco stops . I know this sounds basic but I see every dive divers fully opening there auto dump before leaving bottom and putting up with the squeeze and cold for the ascent. I have shared my opinion the just look at me with a blank expression. The problem is cannot find any written or video guide lines to share. Dave UK diver

Achim, what would you recommend as your "battle rhythm" during ascents to vent both your drysuit and your BCD? would you focus on venting the drysuit during your10 meter travel time when moving to your next stop AND, then, on-arrival at the hang (even if it's only 1 minute) to perform the venting of the BC while horizontal at the stop? I agree SO MUCH with your position about the drysuit being used solely to provide comfort (air is a great insulator in addition to having the proper thickness undergarments!) and offset ambient pressure squeeze, and the fact that the bubble inside the drysuit can range from your shoulders/neck all the way down your legs (if you get out of trim!); whereas an inflated BCD limits the range of the the bubble to the confines of your torso. Still, it does require an ascending diver to vent BOTH bubbles as the as the pressure reduces and bubbles increase in volume ... thus the question about your recommendation as to the "rhythm" for venting drysuit and BCD/wing.

A good video. I struggle with trying to get my weighting correct. I use a full 7mm wetsuit. I am thinking of getting a dry suit and it does seem logical that use of the dry suit for buoyancy control is a good idea. But if you think it through the way you explain it’s a bad idea. I don’t fit the perfect profile for a dry suit. Which means it will have to be tailored or I will have to try on a lot of different brands.
@timgosling6189
@timgosling6189 3 жыл бұрын
A drysuit will always be part of your buoyancy as you use air to combat the squeeze and for warmth. That will mean you need less air in your BC. But what's in the suit is there as a necessary baseline; the adjustment you may then need to do is much easier and less prone to problems if you use the BC.

I have now start drysuit diving with a back plate and wing . I’m trying to use the principles you mentioned. I’m an In experienced diver over and am really struggling to achieve and maintain buoyancy and trim . Are there any ISE instructors in the U.K. ?

I've just move to a dry suit. I'm happy to use bcd for buoyancy but I've been told by my instructor to only use the dry suit going forward. I dont feel great using my dry suit for buoyancy. Any suggestions?
