Hi Karen; this is such a fun technique, I love it. For the smudge on the white, some things you can do are make sure your glue is still wet and right to the edge when you burn, and then don't clean off the soot until your glue is completely dry. You can also use a slightly damp cloth or microfibre cloth to remove the soot and then put your topcoat on.

In the little holes in the letters, poke something up from behind so the napkin sticks up a bit, then do the fire from the front as usual.

Poking through the little holes work...but if you go from the front you may scorch/discolor the front napkin with the flame. K

I was so thrilled to see that you tried that napkin burn technique. Isn't it addictive? I've gone to Dollar Tree a total of 3 thimes just to find some pieces I wanted to do. The thin metal type words are so cool. I did notice that sometimes the napkin would burn off to where it let some of the bottom show and that probably just means that I didn't have enough glue to the end so I just added some more on and you'd never know. I do like how you trimed the napkin way closer to your piece than I did. That was great because it doesn't give you as much ash that way. On the wooden halloween signs I loved having some burn or ash marks cause it made it look distressed as though we went around it and inked it. It wasn't like that all over, just there at one bottom and I think that is cause I just kept going over it to burn the inside holes. You also were very smart to pop out your centers on the words. None of mine were big enough to worry about or so I didn't think but that would have been helpful even on the small type holes. See, you are brand new to this and still teaching me something new to do. :) Thank you so much!

HI, Karen - great job! Could you kindly post a list of the various things you used - gesso, glue stick, etc on the 3 pieces? Love the finished looks!!
@KarenBurchill
@KarenBurchill 3 жыл бұрын
The supplies for this are minimal and nothing "artist grade" is necessary. I used economy white gesso or regular acrylic paint on the wooden pieces, elmers glue stick but also used dollar store variety. On one I used fluid matte medium and I've seen some use modpodge...the glue stick is the easiest. Napkins go very translucent so painting out the wood color to preserve the brightness I feel is necessary but it is a personal choice. I either go neutral for paint or pick a color from the background such as the teal on the believe sign. Good luck.

Easier to remove the napkin layers by putting a tiny bit of glue between two fingers and touch the corner of the napkin. Comes right apart. That being said, the Believe sign and the letters, BEAUTIFUL!!

Hi, I love the burning edges tip. I'm not a huge fan of the M&B sign. The edges seem smudged. Maybe if you use puff paint the outline each letter it will pop. I love love love the believe sign. I was thinking you might want to spray the edges blue first, before jesso'ing the white letters. I like the peacock print but I was thinking a nativity or sunset passion scene napkin would be glorious as the believe print. I like the addition of gold. I love the flowery KB. Simple yet elegant.

I think the problem with using a dark color under the napkin is that when you glue the napkin on it goes transluscent and shows whatever color or pattern is underneath so unless my napkin had a dark background i don't think I would do that....you definitely could paint the sides a dark color....which I have done successfully. K

Maybe try blowing the burnt bits with a blow dryer ( low setting) instead of brushing it 🤷🏻‍♀️ might keep the smudging minimal
