I think you guys did a really good job on explaining Burning Man to people that have not been there before.

This is very well done -- and spot on. I went to my first burn in 2018 as a 50-year old. It's my opinion that one's experience at Burning Man can be as wide ranging as the people who attend. For me, I don't drink or do drugs, and went into the Burn worried my sobriety would prevent me from having the "full" experience at Burning man. How wrong I was. I had a mind-blowing experience with incredible people and learned so much about myself while being my "authentic" self. It was overwhelming (in a wonderful way) and difficult to describe. I'll say this though. One's very first 48 hours at Burning Man, it's difficult to process what you're seeing and how it makes you feel. I think it was a good 2-3 days into the Burn before I started to really understand the experience -- and opportunity -- on the playa. Happy to report I'll be attending the 2022 Burn.

My daughter has gone every year. She's a firedancer and does shows out there. She's heading for the playa -just got her freeeeeee ticket+parking! Nothing bad ever happened to her out there. Just fun and friends!

I've been 8 years (2002-2009) and stopped going in a large part because it was the same each year. I'd see too many of the same art cars, same camps, same events, same people dressed in one of several category styles, even the art was frequently similar (or in cases the very same) as art in previous years. Yes I get the financial issue to make a massive art piece or vehicle and only use or display it once, but at least try to change it up, even a little bit, maybe to align with the yearly theme. I went to an Org evening where they claimed they were going to listen to suggestions, I asked that the street layout could be different to spice things up (eg 4 smaller C shapes, like 4 cities each with their own center piece to burn), but no ... apparently the guy who designed it died, so they weren't going to change the layout. Other peoples suggestions were ignored too. It seemed to be a gesture that they claim to listen to the people, but they were going to do what they wanted anyway. The first few years were great, but losing that novelty ... it was same-old same-old each year. Maybe that's improved in the 10 years I've not been going. One thing was really terrible that I saw my VERY first day there was ̶S̶t̶a̶r̶b̶u̶c̶k̶s̶ ̶ the coffee shop in center camp. I've suggested it should be outside (at least) not INSIDE center camp, as it causes way too much noise (affecting events like mediation, or stage performances), it has way too many and long lines (seriously if you need coffee, pack it in, work out how to make it yourself), but the BIG PROBLEM is there should be no money exchanged. I don't care which solution is used, but this is NOT a good example of a gift economy, it is a good example of one rule for the Org and one rule for everyone else. It also got way too crowded, I went when there it was mid-20,000 and that was reasonable, my later years there was double that and was way too many people. Sadly, regional events never really took off. I've been to many, they're great. I'm unsure why people only focus on the one big main "holy grail" event. Another disappointment (mentioned in this video) was the isolation when you went. Yes, it was cool when some tech guys made a working phone via satellite, but with the advent of true cell signals, access to the Internet, the idea to break away from the default world was lost, another nail in the coffin of why I stopped going. In 2009 my wife looked into the Orgs finances and was wasn't pleased, eg some things looked like double dipping accounting, or charging for things as if new but were just reused from the previous years, execs getting big incomes (well ... side incomes so they didn't have to report it) while living in rent-controlled housing. People complain about fancy camps, but first camp (ie the org camp) is the first fancy camp, it is the same - yet that's ok. Also fancy camps are only a VERY small percentage of what's there, but is blown all out of proportion. At least fancy camps PAY their employees, I disliked that there were too many stories how the Org were using (as in "taking advantage of") volunteers, akin to being like a Disneyland where the employees are paid with some food tokens for working LONG shifts in terrible conditions. Ticket prices also went up, while was was done was similar to previous years. The Org would say but we have to have twice as many toilets for twice as many people, but surely the average cost per person should still be the same. Again... bad accounting. I think the corruption might have been resolved, but I'd love the IRS to audit them. My wife (being African American) noticed how it was very "white", yes there is some diversity but nothing like the ratio of the "default world", perhaps not the fault of anyone, if someone goes they bring their friends which might not spread to other demographics that well, but there she found there were too many elitist privileged types making ridiculous idealistic statements like "anyone can go" - yeah ... just ask that of 50% of the US population who live paycheck to paycheck, but they still ignorantly argue, or effectively say how they are right because they are burnier than thou, and they knew Larry or some BS. Then there's the fact of too many people with negative attitudes, like the gate gestapo or DPW. If you don't want to be there ... please leave and let everyone else have a good time (or drink more water). However I've not been there in 10 years, maybe they've lightened up and are not destroying art pieces in their searching of everyone's vehicle as you come in. But even others have this idea that being radical means being a dickhead, rude, and too many don't understand that no means no. I think that's a bigger problem than fancy camps. However it is fun to go. Yes. But if your gripes get bigger than your enjoyment ... then it's time to leave.

I went for this first time this year, it was incredible! However I was definitely disappointed by the influencer culture that has infiltrated it. There were too many times where I felt like people were too cool to interact (lack of eye contact, warmth and general snobbery.) I was part of a build crew and after weeks of grinding it was super obvious who had just flown in for the sunrise photo sessions. I wish I could have experienced 7 years ago! I'm looking forward to experiencing regional burns in the future too :)

If the idea of BM appeals to you, but you cant afford it, it's too far, ect. There are small regional burns all over the country. They're almost just a cool, hell sometimes cooler than BM. The community is smaller, and more genuine imo. And they're significantly cheaper to attend. I can attend for a full burn (5-7 days depending) for under a grand, including gas, food, lodging, costumes, "gifts" (I always bring a couple hundred of something to gift; lighters, chapstick, keychains, ect), camp dues, toiletries, art supplies/projects, ect. So for a week vacation that leaves you genuinely better off, a grand is cheap!! I and every burner I know leaves a burn feeling refreshed mentally, and emotionally. It's amazing to step out of the real world, not have to worry about money, or anything, and just be free for a few days. Also, I wish they would have touched on the volunteer aspect of it. I'm not sure how BM runs, but all the regional burns I've attended are ran by volunteers. It's an amazing experience, to help bring the city together step by step, and then help pack it all out after you've squeezed every drop of fun out. You don't have to volunteer of course, but it's the best way to burn imo. Another thing that is never mentioned, and again maybe it's just a regional thing, a burn is GREAT for the local economy! People flood in, spending money on their way in and out at restaurants, stores, hotels, ect. There's always always sort of "charity" type thing too. Food drives for the local food pantry, clothing donation bins for the local homeless shelters, collection jars to benefit the local police department, emts, ect (usually all 3+). At regional burns we hire our own security, and emts. But we still appreciate the "official ones", and try to show our appreciation as much as possible. Y'all should do a video on smaller regional burns, it's the same concept, but on a whole nother level.

I really like the Busting Myth Series.. But One thing that would be nice and the fact that it doesn't have this option has been a bit annoying, is to narrate the questions. Because a lot of the time, I am listening to these series while working, and it works great as a mini podcast, but the fact that the questions are not narrated is annoying. I usually end up stopping what I am doing to rewind and see what the question was. I don't know, maybe it is first world problem, but it would be nice to be able to consume the series without having to actively watch it.

Thanks for describing what takes place there. I always thought I was missing out, but I now know it's not for me. Besides, I would not do well in the high temperatures at the Black Rock Desert. And the Alkaline Dust that's everywhere is stirred up by the thousands of vehicles, bicycles, car sculptures and people on foot. Also, it contributes to dust storms and is detrimental to my wellbeing, but thanks for the video.

I think it's really weird that people have to go to a dessert with no cell service in order to be themselves.... I've always been myself. I don't conform, and I don't embrace culture without criticizing it. It makes me wonder if any of these answers are truly the opinions of those being interviewed.

Loved this! I've only been to BM once. I had joined a conclave and performed before they burned the man. I would definitely love to go again but without the obligations of a conclave. Don't get me wrong. I LOVED performing, but I would like to go completely free of any obligations.

Sadly, Burning Man isn't a leave no trace event. There's a lot of trash along the roads this year and on the playa. People need to be more careful and not leave trash all along the road if you want this event to continue.

Before this video I thought Burning Man was a waste of time for self-indulgent hippies. Now I realize Burning Man is a colossal waste of time for a lot of different people, including Yuppies.

Once you deal with the logistics of an esplanade theme camp for 5 years, and fail not once..but only through massive effort and resourcefulness..you find out more about yourself, what you are capable of, and how far you can go to get things done.

Not true about the no lineups and no schedules and that's kind of what really ultimately bothers me about burning Man now, there is a whole complete underground bourgeois lineup schedule at the million dollar camps where the average burner isn't even invited and these DJs are getting paid tens of thousands of dollars to play these special camps and they even hire publicist and booking agents to organize their burning man's schedule.

I've always wondered about Burning Man. thanks. I have attended the Rainbow Nation (old hippies) camp at a national park for a weekend with drum circles,yoga,partial nudity, with a central sharing kitchen. You can bring rice or beans to share..They would also greet you by saying Welcome Home. Last time I went was 36 years ago ..oh my gosh, I'm old.

I went. It was incredible, despite my personal disability and mobility problems, it was Incredible. People from all over the world coexisting with acceptance and caring. If the historical Jesus went there he would say, "cool, you are actually doing what I told you to do, which is LIVE THE GOLDEN RULE". I will go back. There are so many worlds created by everyone that I want to see and appreciate, and I will create my own, too. Now, I have to add to Janis Joplin's line "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose". Freedom is also Burning Man and seeing the incredible humanity there, showing me we can all work together, because we have a whole planet and all its life to lose or to cherish. ***The time has come to show people that NOBODY IS NOBODY!

What people are failing to state here is what it costs to go. The cost of tickets in 2019 ranged from $425 to $1,400 and some scalpers got even more. Tickets were gone in a little over 4 hours. Some of these tickets were bought up by bots and resold at much higher scalped prices. The technical glitches that have plagued their ticking system remains and was still a problem this year. When they say... "Has it changed?" It sure has! People landing by helicopter in the desert to ready made camps with RV's with AC and personal chefs on hand? Sure, go see if you can go knock on their door to get something for free from them. Good Luck! Meanwhile there's only one access road in or out for the rest of those without their own air transport. And it's another $100 to get your vehicle in too. It's all about $$$ these days. And while it's true you won't be spending anything there... You better bring enough supplies to rely on while your there. You are paying to rent a piece of the dessert. People and their money and power have ruined this event. Big changes are stated to be coming for 2020. What? Corporate Sponsors??? I wouldn't doubt it with the direction it's headed in. The only accurate statement made in this video was when the guy said Burning Man is mirroring our own society. He nailed it. There are those that "have", and those that "have not". People can either agree or disagree with what I've said. I've talked to enough people that have gone and more and more of them are not repeating year after year as the promoters want you to believe. YESSS! Radical self reliance! Also interesting bc while I havent been I have been to many other events and helped with all the things that help a festival function! I was watching a documentary on mountain biking and hiking and how these epic trails peoplpe do has CHANGED so much. In the past (prior to the internet) the way people found out about the NCT or PCT or Havasupi trail were by word of mouth through a unspoken vetting system. Do burners of the past before this changed agree with this vetting process and tell me more!

Rain and mud for days, or temperature above 100°, watching video and listening to people who have been to the festival it’s probably the last place I want to go, I guess I just don’t get it. Hanging out for a week in a mud pit or an oven sounds like nothing but misery to me.

All great, but don't think about wearing bunches of glitter. The only thing that is expected to be there "after the burn" are like footprints and tire tracks. So nothing that will junk up the ground. After you are there, you realize that the only "norm" is acceptance and mutual appreciation. If only the rest of the world was as loving. Was only there once, but hope to again some day.

After going 9 times, there are very few "there ares".. I found it to be different every year for the most part..And quite frankly you only really start having fun when you volunteer for one of the ORG groups like DPW or Rangers or gayte..
