The plaintiff hired and paid the defendant, a personal chef, to cater a small dinner party she was hosting. However, after getting her money, the plaintiff claims the defendant ghosted her before the event, so she’s suing for a refund. The defendant insists the plaintiff tried to cancel a week before the event after he had already performed prep work, so he doesn’t owe her anything.

I could feel her anxiety as she was telling her side. The lack of communication stressed her out thinking she might not have a chef for a DINNER party. If he didn’t want to work with the customer after the initial meeting, he should have relayed his assistant’s information and told her to contact the assistant with any further questions or concerns

It is NOT his job to do things that aren't his job, and explaining that is NOT, in any way, bad business (especially for a $300 - $400 all inclusive fee). In fact, doing otherwise would mislead the client, and would almost certainly cause confusion with the client and the party planner, and could also increase his liability, if her assumption caused a problem: And he CERTAINLY doesn't need to constantly hold her hand. Also, a business person contacting you hours after your text isn't CLOSE to unreasonable or leaving her hanging (ESPECIALLY when his assistant contacted her immediately, but the client refused to deal with her). Usually, having a call returned within 24 hours is really good. Especially when it wasn't a change or a problem, but just wanting to make sure that everything is okay??? SMH. His take home after taxes might be $80- $120, at most, for hours of work. You want constant hand holding, pay more. And of course it matters. Time = money. He did nothing wrong at all. I would in the future, however, suggest he responds to all texts / communications from clients to confirm he received it and everything is good. Even when it isn't strictly necessary, like when she sent the address or when she told him to select the sides. Sometimes, texts or e-mails are not delivered / received (or it goes to spam, for e-mails), so it's good to confirm you did receive it, and everything is fine. But as a client, you can eliminate stress by saying, please let me know you received this, and everything is good. Then WAIT a reasonable time (1-2 days) for a reply.

I don’t think she was overly demanding. Yes, she sent a few texts to update him with info, as she should. But he wasn’t responsive at all in the couple weeks before the party. From her perspective, I can see how she really didn’t know for sure if he was still onboard to cater. To me he came off a little egotistical. Unfortunately, he doesn’t think he has any reason to improve his customer service. And winning this case reaffirmed that for him, so he won’t change. It doesn’t take much to quickly acknowledge a business text. He can do better.

Um . . . No, that's not true. Contrary to what she claimed / lied at the beginning of the case, he absolutely DID converse with her. But when he's making such a low amount of money (his take home before taxes is likely $100 - $150), he's not going to repeatedly and unnecessarily hold her hand. They went over things the previous weekend by text, and when she contacted him the day she fired him, he was cooking at another event but his assistant IMMEDIATELY contacted her. The client refused to speak with the assistant! Well, then she'll have to wait until he's done. And after the event, that day, he DID call her back. Well, apparently that's not good enough!!!!! No, when the plaintiff wants something, everyone else needs to drop what they're doing!!! Apparently, the world and everyone in it exists for her benefit! I see that most people ignored the evidence and blindly believed the plaintiff's lying, flapping gums. Disturbing.

I've been watching this series for a couple years but forgot to subscribe to the People's Court KZfaq channel, so now I did. I love this no-holds barred, nononsense judge. True, sometimes approaching it nicely does not work, so one needs to bang on heads to get them to wake up from their dream world, so to speak. In my dealings, I do the same, bang on rudely. That does the trick and they understanfd the reality of it all. But one learns a lot watching these cases. Thank you.

If he had better customer services skills he would have likely won a repeat client. A simple reply would have made her feel better. I do get what he's saying too. Yes, it is annoying having to have unnecessary conversations with people that just want to suck up your time to checking in. However, there's a way to handle it. No responding isn't the way. That said, I agree that she did jump the gun. This one is on her for firing him.

When I’m 41, I’ll be 39. So for the judge to say that was hilarious . And yes he should’ve just been nice she could’ve been a repeat client that’s unfortunate.

Defendant's professional and people skills are crap. It's infuriating when someone you're working with, and PAYING to do a job for you, doesn't get back to you when you try to reach them. JM said something like, "when you sent him the address that maybe required a response back." No, it DID require a response back. Texting back, "Got it, thanks, I'll be there" would take 10 seconds and relieve her mind tremendously. If your client tries to contact you, that means they want to speak to you. It's not up to YOU to decide that they don't really need to. They are PAYING you, and if they want to speak to you, then you speak to them. AT LEAST answer their texts! Ghosting a client is completely unprofessional, and I don't care how good a cook this guy is, I would never want to do business with him.

I can understand her concerns with the lack of communication especially AFTER she'd paid him for services for a future date. These days there are so many scams going on that you really take a gamble with sending a deposit and not knowing if the services are legit or not. If he is going to run a successful business he needs to understand customer service. Regardless if he is just the chef, he still needs to maintain a high level of professionalism and make it clear from the time of booking that any questions and emergencies should go through his assistant and that direct communication with him will be at a minimum as he focuses and prepares for the event. Plain and simple.

Im not sure what he meant or what you meant by the statement he's not the party planner. She wasn't contacting him for party planning advice. She was updating him regarding her Food order. The party decorator was not a planner. He was purposely ignoring her and only called her back when his "assistant" called her and she learned the plaintiff wanted to cancel. ( I his assistant in quotes because had his assistant been a real assistant she would've called the client back at 9 in the morning. And quickly said " morning, chef rudeness has been busy preparing for a large event today .. im his assistant Ms. nobody Jones i know how important your bday is...let me help you for now. She NEEDED to know that he had received the address and everything was going to plan. It would have taken him 15 seconds to write her a text letting her know that. If he'd just answered her with a quick text the first time, it never would have gotten the point where she was annoying. It's like the person who complains, "Stop nagging me! I told you I'd do it the first 53 times you asked!" Yeah, it's the nagger's fault. Right.

@@Geronimo2Fly He talked to her planner. I’ve been in the hospitality industry 13 years. If you have a PLANNER, a chef and every vendor talks to THAT person not the client. A busy vendor is NOT going to talk to 2 and 3 people for one event. Aside of that, the client also had the opportunity to talk to his assistant which is clearly acceptable that she REFUSED. She was one of those people that thought since she paid the chef that she should only talk to him which is also NOT how the business works. He communicated with her. She didn’t like the way he communicated. That IS her fault.

As a party planner I can see what he means. It was no reason for her to keep checking in or having people call him. Even with a wedding the chef doesn't need to coordinate with every vendor. Just give your vendors their time to set up and break down . Or hire someone like me that can place the calls for you. But if we call vendors we don't check in this many times. He could of replied and this might of been settled. As a business owner always stay in contact even with your demanding customer
