Burt wouldn't dare to do this when Johnny was host or to some of the great comedic minds like Don Rickles, Buddg Hackett or any of those guys. Imagine him having beef with Rickles and Sinatra sends his goons after him.

Does anyone know more background about this? Like surely they have some kind of past that the public wasn't privy to? They couldn't just shown up to Leno and met there and went at it like that, right?

One of the most memorable moments in late night TV history involved Burt Reynolds and children's game show host Marc Summers getting into a very real fight. It was October 17, 1994 and Reynolds was in the midst of going through a messy divorce with Loni Anderson, which Jay Leno made a joke about at the top of the show. This had put Reynolds in a bad mood, who was fuming while Leno casually chatted with Summers. While Summers and Leno gabbed, Reynolds snapped at Summers that he couldn't hear him because his back was turned. "Who told you that you were a neatness freak?" Reynolds asks Summers. "My wife told me that. I'm still married," Summers responds, patting Reynolds on the shoulder. Bad idea. Reynolds scowls at Summers then empties his mug onto Summers's lap. Summers tries to return the favor, but Reynolds acts quick, and smacks his hand away. The situation devolves from there, and Leno can't get control of the show. Thankfully some producer thought fast and produced some pies to help it look like some sort of bit, but even the pie toss gets a little physical. It's absolutely wild, and even up until this year, Summers was talking about it. "Burt Reynolds was going through a bad divorce with Loni Anderson," Summers later explained. "This was not planned, it was all real. Jay called me afterward and asked, 'What's going on between you and Burt?' It was like survival of the fittest. I was a comic. You wait your entire life to get on the Tonight Show, I wasn't going to let this guy fuck it up for me."

I was a teenager when this happened in 1994, and I never understood why the media and Tonight Show execs blamed Marc Summers. Watching at home, Marc really didn't do anything wrong, and it's also clear the audience was on the side of Marc Summers. Jay Leno started it by making a joke about Burt's divorce with Loni Anderson, which had Burt pissed. Then Marc and Jay are talking, and Burt makes a rude comment about Marc having his back turned to him. Marc Summers was the more innocent guy that walked into this, Burt should have thrown water at Jay, not Marc. Yes Marc ignited Burt with the "I'm still married" comment, but Burt egged Marc Summers first and then got violent with throwing water on him. Marc Summers was never invited back to The Tonight Show, but I always remember the audience being on Marc Summes side. But reading the comments here from people 30 years later, everyone thinks Burt was the good guy here in the right.

Reynolds was such an asshole. He knew he wasn’t a good actor he got stupid parts. His way over his head in the movie business. He was the next jock at Florida State. That’s all he was. They tried to force him into the business thinking it would be an easy switchover. Obviously it wasn’t.

Burt Reynolds couldn't keep his marriage to Lonnie Anderson together, and blamed her for everything. Meanwhile he continually acted like a douche. You can't hear it clearly here buy Summers said, "My wife, I'm still married." And then Reynolds had a hissy fit. I'm surprised we never heard of Reynolds being cold cocked very much. I'd bet it happened a bunch but was covered up. Just my theory based on how he acted to others.
