In this video I wanted to share a few of my thoughts on some of the drawbacks with the Burton Step-On system. While I still think that this is a convenient binding solution for the casual snowboarder, there are a few considerations to know about before committing to your purchase. The biggest drawback is definitely the lack of width adjustability for setting up your stance, followed by the limited options you have for boots. Burton will be offering more boots to choose from next season, and the entry level price point is actually pretty reasonable. However, you will still be only be able to pair these bindings with a handful of Burton boots. As far as play in the binding goes this definitely does have some impact on responsiveness, but there is a little give and play in all bindings so I think the effect is negligible; especially compared to other common issues such as heel lift. I hope you guys find this video useful! Let me know your thoughts below, thanks for watching.

Awesome reply dude! I used them all last season. I now have two sets of bindings and one pair of boots. Makes switching boards real easy. You can order just the bindings from burton on-line by removing the boots from the bundle. Also - some stores have more bindings than boots - which is how I acquired my second pair 6 weeks ago.

I own the bindings. Just an FYI, at least on mine, the clicking noise is minimal. They do click, but it's about as loud as typing on your keyboard. I don't even notice it. On windy days or going fast I don't hear it at all. I don't notice any pressure points either. This may have to do with the way his heel cleat was setup or his boots since I'm wearing the Photons. I've owned the Cartels, Mala Vitas and some Unions. Out of the bunch, I say the Step-Ons are the most responsive. They also make snowboarding soooooo much better for any old guys out there like me. I give them 5 stars.

I totally agree. You have try them for a season. The photons are excellent. No clicking sound that I can notice - but then at 6-0" my toes are far away. I have used the same bindings as you over the years including Flow NX2 and K2 Cinch which I like also. But these Step Ons are just an incredible break through.

BEST PURCHASE IVE EVER MADE FOR SNOWBOARDING ! No lie, I’ll never go back to straps. Everyone asks about them when they catch me at the bars because I “step on” when the lift ends and take off with the skiers. The Photons are amazing, the rulers are ehh IMO. You want the extra stiffness in the boot so your toeside response is optimal.

From my experience, (two FULL seasons) with these boots and bindings, the toe pressure point gets worse, and can really hurt your foot by the end of the day. It's caused by the fact that the two pads on that side of the boot meet right there at a stitch line, which causes a gap in padding. I've fixed my issue by adding in a line of padding there. (and no, thicker socks didn't help)

Colby Murphy after three full days of riding, I feel like I've gotten used to the step in system. No my feet don't hurt from tightening my boots. But the"hot spot" on the outside on my feet (the same that TJ described) is a real potential issue. As a precaution I've used duct tape over that part of my foot until the padding gets more compressed. This has eliminated any foot discomfort.

@@cole2999 opposite for me. I like a little bit of play in my boots. Both in the photon and in regular snowboard boots. After my first season of Step ons, I went back to my regular bindings and boots to feel the difference. A few runs and my feet were cramping up. I had less control with my old set up (Ride boots and Union Force bindings). I really love the step ons. I have found them to be better in all conditions including deep powder.

Thanks for the review, I’ve been riding the step ons for two seasons now, one other draw back that wasn’t mentioned was the what it means to have a lack of strap support. I find that without the standard binding straps we lose out on the additional security just in case the boots aren’t fitting 100% perfectly. In other words the boots really do have to fit like a glove otherwise the system doesn’t feel right. Also, our feet begin to swell and get sore throughout the day so this doubles the importance of a proper fitting boot. Like you said we only have the options provided by Burton which is a real limiting factor! We also really need to consider the price. These bad boys aren’t cheap by any means! While I’m at it, I should also mention that it could be fairly difficult to get “strapped in” when in heavy pow. I’m a ski patroller who rides regularly and these do have it’s advantages in convenience. I am able to keep up with my fellow skiers but this video is about the disadvantages so I’ll cut it right here.

The clicking noise is from the high-back every time you go to your toe side edge the high-back lifts and comes back down hitting the top of the heel cup of the binding. On mine the noise really loud. Also probably a random issue but my photons boa’s always constantly come loose every 2 runs have re-tighten them.

Jumped in my stepons for the third time this season and they are feeling wayyy looser and more flexible than I remember. To the point where I can see the back of the binding come off the board when I lift my heal. I've got them on a Warpig right now - is this amount of flex normal?

Thank you TJ. I have been riding Stepon for 20 days this season. I agree the ruler is more comfortable than photon, the pressure point was noticeable at first but it went away for the 3-4 days. Either the boot shaped to my foot or I simply get used to it. One disadvantage on top of your three is that I cannot click in on steeper terrain, you just don't have enough force to push your feet against the binding to latch in. So either I have to sit down then pull the board towards myself to click or simply ride a few aggressive turns for it to latch in on its own. The other disadvantage is that the release mechanism worked poorly on a very cold day, either by ice build up or the release lever just gets stiff, not sure. But thanks for sharing your thoughts TJ

I've tried everything. Flows are sweet, but were awkward (for me) to reach. I want to get off the lift and go...Truly, with Step Ons (and K2 Kwickers/BOA boots), I wait until homies are strapped in, then step in/on to my binders. Watching them ratchet looks ridiculous. Per the comment below, once you get used to them, its just a pain in the ass waiting for anyone with traditional straps-no matter how fast they whip into them. I'm done sitting on my ass, or bending over. Go Burton team, keep dialing it in...you're so close. The haters will come around.

I got the 2019 ones for my third season, I had only ridden rental stuff my first 2 years, and if you are okay picking out of only a couple options of boots and colors, then the other things like a little pressure point, clicking noises, a slightly higher cost and the missing micro adjust-ability for your stance width isn't all that bad. They are pretty neat and I would recommend them if your okay with the downsides. For actually riding on the mountain, they work about just as well as normal bindings with the advantage of being a little easier to use sometimes.

@@BeniBeni928 Its been a minute, I do have to say after using normal bindings for the past 3 seasons I would not recommend step ons. The only advantage of step ons are the convenience of not having to strap in. If your looking for gear for the first time, look at used boards and used (non-step on) bindings. That will definitely save you money. If you want to buy new, do some research on some beginner-intermediate level boards and find bindings that are around $150 no need to spend more than that. It may be overwhelming at first, but check out angry snowboarder. That channel is where I learned %90 of what I know about snowboarding.

Biggest drawback for me is the stance adjustability, however I run into the same issue with some traditional bindings. I don't get the hotspot like you do, so maybe it's specific to one's feet structure. Surprisingly, biggest advantages for me is, first, the comfort of it. I used to get pain from traditional ankle straps putting pressure on my bone spurs on top of my feet. Secondly, its responsiveness and immediate movement transfer to the board, my foot arch/plantar don't hurt anymore when I go toe edge. Lastly, the obvious -- the convenience of in/out, my skier wife and son likes it.

I think that if your Bindings are centered between heel and toe edge; i.e.: if you don´t have large feet or trouble with dragging toes and heels…. you can actually just turn the discs 90° and use the three holes in the disc to fine-tune your stance in longitudinal direction. Thoughts?

I demoed these a few times and I love them. Although I do just mostly cruise with a jump here and there so I cant speak to more hardcore and park centric riders. As far as these drawbacks I can’t say I didn’t experience any of them, but the pros really outweigh the cons for me at the end of the day. The one thing I don’t understand is the push back against having to buy the boots as well as the bindings. There’s a reason they call it a system. Having control of the design of both boots and bindings seems to be the obvious thing to do if you want to increase safety, especially for such a new design. Hoping third parties engineer boots correctly en mass seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Burton has said once they perfect these designs they will share them publicly with the industry in an effort to make them standard. Perhaps not too different from the ski world. Burton pioneered the entire snowboard design and industry, so trust that things will evolve like snowboarding technology always has. I’m actually surprised how good step ons have been in the first year of release and can’t wait to get my hands on next years models!

I have the Felix Step On boots and I love it! I went to a service where I heat molded my boots in a special oven so no sweet points, feels like a sock. Disadvantages (because this is what this video is about) : -The price higher than normal boots -The second BOA system makes it impossible to wear the boots with another bindings (normal ones) -the package with the bindings and boots arrived with NO stickers from Burton. -You have to wait for your friends to adjust their bindings, you are just click and go. It makes you realize just how much time you lost before, while u had the normal bindings. - takes some practice to learn how to open the system after you fall in the powder. -very hard to step on on a very icy and abrupt area, because you have to dig with one foot with the edge of your board, until you have a flat area. I once lost my board from the top of the mountain, it went down for a few kilometers. Lucky it only hit a tree, but it could have been a human and I did not understood in the beginning why I should wear the leash (it came with a string, to attach one foot to the board), also useful while climbing with one foot attached, on a drag lift. -if you want to sell it, with this step on system, no one will buy it, or you will have to find two separate buyers (or, by coincidence, find a person as tall as you, wearing the same shoe size). - The crowd on the waiting line to climbing, all give you "the look". You are like a weirdo to most of them. It's like you don't have a leg, but you only don't have the straps. I felt misunderstood the first time I tried the step on, and my friends were making fun. Also my snowboard instructor was skeptical about it. -First 5 rides were very hard. The response my board has it's much much quicker than my old Burton, because my foot is closer to the board and I felt like a feather. Also I felt a little more speedy (the board was new too, went from a rocker to a camber). So I had to lift my toes a little less, for the same turn. First turns were just smitten.

I really liked the O'Sin step-in bindings that were available over 15 years ago. This is a reinvention of the wheel. The largest disadvantage now as then is the high price, which means that most boarders cannot afford them, and eventually, because they then don't sell many of them, Burton will discontinue them. I have the setup with Photon boots which I purchased in Nov 2018. I don’t notice the clicking noise or pinky toe hot spot. Agree that stance adjustability is the biggest downside. Also, exiting the binding as you approach the lift is a small annoyance. Your front boot will always catch a little so it’s not a smooth exit. All that said, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages for me. Love skating off the lift and stepping on quickly to get going and the responsive ride.

The base recipe is for a version of Lotta's beautiful, homemade, hot from the oven, loaded with sugar and spice, golden, buttery, classic cinnamon buns. Favorite Cinnamon Buns One of the great things about them, is that you can prepare them ahead of time, and freeze the pre-baked rolls. The night before you're ready to bake them, leave them to thaw, covered, on your counter, and bake them in the morning. I've done versions with whole grain flours, different spice blends, and boozed-up icings - which I'll note in the recipe and headnotes. There are some great insights in the comments as well. Cinnamon Bun Basics To make cinnamon buns you start by making a buttery yeast dough. I know some of you shy away from all recipes yeasty, but these really are fun to make. They take some time, because you need to let the dough rest and rise at various points, but most of that time isn't active. Once you get the hang of things, you can play around with all sorts of different fillings in future batches. If you want to explore something beyond cinnamon sugar, the filling can be anything from jam, a sweet compound butter, a flavored cream cheese filling...you get the idea. Favorite Cinnamon Buns How to Make Cinnamon Buns: The Process So, in short, making cinnamon buns goes like this: Mix the dough. Let it rise. Roll it out. Put down the filling. Roll. Slice. (Freeze here, if you're going that route). Another rise. Bake. Lotta sprinkles her cinnamon buns with pearl sugar before baking, which gives them a nice crunchy top, but I know a lot of people like a thick slathering of icing - to the horror of some Swedes, I might add ;)... I served these w/ raw sugar on top and icing on the side, and used the icing from these hermit cookies. Might I suggest a splash of bourbon as well? You can actually flavor the icing any number of ways... Favorite Cinnamon Buns Cinnamon Buns Recipe Happiest holidays and Merry Christmas to all of you. xo -h! BROWSE : CINNAMON BAKING RECIPES Favorite Cinnamon Buns PRINT RECIPE 4 from 5 votes I imagine these would be extra special if you used this Moroccan Baharat-Cinnamon Rose Blend in place of the cinnamon. And a bit of lemon zest grated onto the filling just before rolling (or sprinkled into the bottom of the baking dish) might be nice. If you plan on freezing any of the pre-baked cinnamon rolls, here's what you want to do. Freeze them for an hour on a baking sheet or until they'll hold their shape, then drop them into a freezer bag, squeeze out any air and seal well. The night before you want rolls for brunch, thaw them overnight on your counter top, covered with a clean dish towel, and bake per the instructions below any time the following morning. *I've done delicious versions using equal parts all-purpose flour and rye flour, or one third part whole-wheat flour to two-thirds all-purpose flour. INGREDIENTS 4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 cup warm whole milk (105F to 115F / 40C to 46C) 3/4 cup / 100g muscovado or brown sugar 1 large egg, beaten 1/2 cup / 125g unsalted butter, barely melted 1 tablespoon ground cardamom 1 teaspoon fine grain sea salt 4 cups / 600g all-purpose flour* Filling 1/2 cup / 60g muscovado or brown sugar 2 tablespoons cinnamon 1/2 cup / 125g unsalted butter, softened Glaze 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water large grain raw sugar or pearl sugar for sprinkling OR you can make an icing to spread on the rolls after baking (recipe below, not pictured)* INSTRUCTIONS Make the Dough: Sprinkle the yeast over the warm milk in a large bowl. Add a pinch of the sugar and stir to dissolve the yeast. Let stand for a few minutes or until foamy. Add the remaining sugar, the egg, melted butter, and cardamom. Stir until smooth. Stir the salt into the flour, then gradually add the flour to the bowl, a bit at a time, incorporating the flour after each addition. Transfer the dough to a floured counter top and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, turn it to coat with oil, and cover with a kitchen towel or equivalent. Let the dough rise in a sunny or warm place until doubled, about an hour. Cut the dough in half on a floured counter top and form each piece into a ball. One at a time, roll each piece into a rectangle 12 inches/30cm and 1/2 inch/12mm thick. See the photos up above if this is confusing. Make the Filling and Shape the Rolls: Start by combining the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. Spread half of the butter evenly over one rectangle of the dough. Sprinkle half of the sugar mixture evenly across the butter. Roll the dough up tightly lengthwise, then turn it so that the seam side is down. Cut the roll into 12 equal slices, a serrated knife works best. You can bake these, cut-side up, on a parchment lined baking sheet, in cupcake liners, or in a buttered baking dish. I used a well-buttered standard pie dish. Unless you are using individual cupcake liners, you want to arrange the slices about 1/2-inch from each other on the baking sheet or in the baking dish. They rise and expand, and end up nice and snuggly in/on the pan. Repeat with the remaining rectangle of dough and filling. You can freeze any slices you aren't going to bake at this point. Cover the rolls you are going to bake with a dry towel and let rise in a sunny or warm spot until doubled, about an hour. The timing is pretty flexible here - you can go a few hours depending on what is convenient. Heat the oven to 400F/ 205C with a rack in the top third. Brush the buns with the egg wash and sprinkle with sugar if you like. Bake the buns until golden brown, roughly 15-18 minutes. Don't over bake, the buns will dry out = not as good. Remove from the oven and serve warm if possible, plain or with a slather of icing* on top of each bun. Icing Recipe: As I mention up above, this is the icing I also use for these hermit cookies. I like to spread a bit on each individual roll before serving or serving the icing on the side with a palette knife for individual spreading. Whisk 1 cup / 3.25 oz / 100g sifted powdered sugar, 4-5 tablespoons heavy cream, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 2 tablespoons bourbon or brandy together in a small bowl. Let sit for a few minutes, then adjust with more sifted powdered sugar if you want a stiffer icing. I'm going to do a creme fraiche version of the icing on Christmas - trading out the heavy cream for creme fraiche.

Great video TJ. I have a question. Between this step on bindings/boots or the Flow Fuse Snowboard Bindings 2020, what would you recommend? or anyone else here that can give me some input. I was sold in the step ons, but now I am not so sure anymore. Specially considering when the base gets packed with ice. Would have to bring something to scrape the ice out there or what?

The base doesn't get packed with snow or ice. If any does get on it you just brush it out like a regular binding and step on.

The clicking sound is the metal side cleats moving around in the cleat hooks. The sound might be annoying but it is nothing to worry about. The bindings are designed to have a bit of play between the cleat and hook to simulate the feel of a traditional binding. Get a pair of Outdoor Tech Chips for your helmet. Problem solved. The pressure point behind behind the pinky toe seems to be a common problem. I suffered with it for over 30 days on snow with the Photon Step On boots. The pain does not go away as the boot breaks in or packs out. The solution that worked for me was to go up a half boot size. I can still feel a bit of a pressure point at times but it is completely manageable. It seems like the shape and sizing of the boot is slightly off. Burton warranty service was awesome about replacing my Photon Step On boots with a larger pair.

Great video, I agree with all of these. I would additionally add that they can be tricky to get out of, especially if you stack in thick powder. I wouldn't recommend them if back country powder is your thing... Getting into them while sitting or in thick powder isn't an issue though, you just need to twist your foot a little and engage one side at a time. I am also a little sceptical of how long the toe piece will last on the binding. The guy at the shop said it's a replaceable part and it does look like a separate piece, but mine has already started to wear and I haven't seen a way to order them. The other disadvantage is that they are never in stock (at least in Europe). I bought the last boot/binding in my country and was lucky that it was my size... the sales guy said that Burton can't produce enough and they almost never have any in stock. Otherwise, I am a convert and I can't see myself going back to straps.

The second click on the back of the binding sucks to get in deep pow. Other than that your right getting out can be a chore. I found a spin of the foot is the easiest to release the boot. And the click sound i get from the toe does bother me too.

There is a lot of little clicking sounds, but the toe part of the clip you pretty much don’t even need, all of the pressure is on the heels, so if that really distracts you go buy an adjustable piece for your binding that pushes your boot higher up in the binding and will reduce the clicking noises by a lot

Figure out if it is on the inner or the outer boot. Then make some kind of set up to press it out when you are not riding. If something is physically there you can try to grind it down.

The negatives I've encountered: - Pant clip is not long enough. Twice I've gotten my pant leg stuck in the rear cleat, and it's a pain in the ass to get it out - Getting on is difficult if the terrain is not flat. Doing a traditional "sit down with legs down the hill" isn't easy as it takes a lot of pressure to fully click in - Most times I find that I have to hold the release lever in order to get out Other than that these are the best bindings I've ever had. I hope the EST rumor is true :)

Just finished my first season in the Burton Step ons. I'm 5'4" and 160lbs. 8.5 photon boots and medium bindings. Limited selection in boots is a non issue for me. I love the photon boots. Burton built the system into their most popular selling boot. The boots do run a tad small or snug. They are comfortable, quick to break in, and moderately stiff. As far as the click, I've only noticed that on 1-2 runs out of 30 days. Never bothered me and is not an issue. Pinky toe hotspot. Again I've noticed that once towards the end of the season. Not sure why but it happened after I adjusted my foot bed forward to accommodate for setting the highbacks as far forward as they will go. Other than these minor issues I LOVE this system. Very quick in and out and very responsive. I dislike the velcro patches on the tongue and have since covered them up. I also do not cinch my boots down tight. I prefer a bit of heel lift. Another minor gripe is that the BOA cord is not metal like in my old RIDE boots. I can't say enough good things about this system. If you can't find them locally call their flagship distribution centers and have them shipped.

Other than that I've not heard anything negative about the system. After sitting down n strapping in multiples of times I totally get the concept and am prepared to chuck some cash at a set for next season, you never know they may get even better as all of the feedback filters back to Burton's R&D guys.....

That noise is so minimum that you would really have to try to hear it in order to hear it. Second, I would think if you have a weird foot shape you will have that pressure point. @wrinkle66

Ironically better than strap bindings - and here's why. With snowpack the Burton Step on still locks into the heel ratchet. As you ride or apply pressure on your heel side and any snow compacts or loosens they self tighten into the second position. With strap bindings as the snow compact or dissipates you would have to tighten toe and ankle. I have been riding them all season hard - not a single issue. The biggest fear for most people is psychological - no straps - how can they possible be as good??? Take a look at this manufacturing process video to see the lengths they went to - to produced this binding... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5-ga9Oarq3Ml6s.html

Mark Simmonds Ok cheers. I have middle of the range Flow bindings currently and the main problem with them is snow pact. It never comes out though unless I scrape it out with the teaspoon I carry. Another problem with them is that the 4 ratchets on each binding occasionally tighten between taking on and off. I do like their ease of use of snapping the heal in then straight up and go, rather than others sitting down then up on their knees then go. I board with skiers mainly and to be able to stomp the foot straight in and go straight from the lift would be awesome. Does the upper lace on the boot need to be extra tight to compensate for the loss of bridge binding?
@Chaugar

Snow pack has been largely a non issue for me compared to my Union Force bindings for 2 reasons. The step ons boot and binding seat tightly allowing very little room for snow to get under there. 2) for some odd reason snow doesn't stick to the foam footbed like in my Union bindings. It was a big issue for me with my Unions but not at all in the step ons.

Clicking sound, yes it does, even on the newest model. Does it affect you at all? No. However, the pressure point outside the pinky toe was a big issue after 2 straight days of riding. Eventually went medieval 90’s on the liner, and cut out a lot of the foam padding right at that point only, and these boots are suddenly the most comfortable I’ve ever ridden. All in all, this system is the absolute best in terms of jumping on and snaking a good pow line before your friends even get in, and super comfy. One thing that no one has mentioned yet is after riding a long way on the flats in normal bindings, i get serious cramps on the bottom of my feet from the downward pressure of the straps. Not with these!
