When I was in elementary school, I had a bus driver that just drove across the railroad not following any procedure. She got fired over something. I think DUI. Next driver did it right. I thought what the heck is this ? lol. That run was bordering on overcrowding and seemed bad about rough kids. Principals and other officials talk to us on the bus several times. The bus went thru several drivers. Eventually, they actually got somebody that kicked kids off the bus when they acted up. He drove that run for quite awhile. When he left, that run was spun off onto other busses. I switched to getting off at my grandmas house long before he left driving by the pharmacy where I used to get off at all along. My driver got that stop.

I agree with the standard transmission as you said. Because when I drove that was all had the e brake was activated while the bus was in neutral because we had some slopes running up to our country grade Crossing this kept the bus from rolling back on while you're checking the tracks when you're taking off and possibly hitting a car behind you. We also have to turn all of our blowers in the front off every time during the winter and the fans above the windshield when it was warm when stopping at a Crossing. My grandmother had her kids will trained they got quiet when they got to a crossing but she drove 41 years our district had a rule you flash the dome lights twice and the kids were get quiet we never had any problem. But things have changed some

It's a hypothetical thing to impress upon new drivers to never stop on the tracks with a bus load of children. It's never happened to my knowledge, it's a teaching tool.

Also I know this sounds strange but even when I'm driving my own car and I approach a railroad crossing I flip on my hazard lights turn off my radio come to a complete stop within the 50 feet roll down both my windows and look left and right then I proceed on if I do not see or hear a train and once I get fully across the tracks I turn off my hazard flashers and then my radio back on. The only thing I don't do is set the parking brake and put it in neutral then shift to 1 I just stay in regular Drive. Again I know this might sound strange but you can never be too careful when it comes to train tracks

Yes, it's a Maxxforce. We are supposed to use noise kill also, I just wish that switch worked on the kids too.

Sure do. We usually count the cars as they go by.

Only if there were more bus drivers like you

Hi guy, here in Alabama, we have to do pretty much everything that you just did, except we don't have to shift into neutral....just apply the parking break and open the window and door, etc.. We've always been told that applying the parking brake keeps the bus from being knocked forward in case you're ever rear ended and hit from behind, and knocked into the path of an oncoming train. . :)

It's true school buses have to stop at all railroad crossings just to make sure that there are no trains coming when they come to a Railroad Crossing it's very important that everyone has to stay quiet so the driver can hear the sound of a train coming he said open the doors and the window and look both ways to make sure that there are no trains coming if there's not you're good to go

I think it is a hold over from the days when buses were manual shift. I can see the wisdom of not shifting a manual when crossing, but it is pointless with a auto since you can't stall it like you can a stick shift.

The incident that led to these safety procedures for school buses occurred on December 14, 1961 near Greeley, Colorado.

Maybe dropping it down into first gear ensures you have plenty of torque to push a car out of the way lol.

I wanna guess that your bus has a MAXXFORCE 7 engine. In Indiana, nearing up the railroad tracks, we hit the hazards and the noise kill switch, open the driver window, and stop and open the door. I'm kinda glad they don't make us park the bus completely.
