Extrema Ratio DMP Full Field Review
Here I take my Extrema Ratio DMP out into the mountains for several days of hiking and camping to determine, can this knife, the DMP designed for military applications be of use in the wilds?
I have written at length about the usefulness of some military purposed blades for civilian usage.
Designed primarily for military carry on waist with a highly adjustable elasticised leg loop and anti rattle Nylon scabbard, the Extrema Ratio can be easily dissembled without tools for thorough cleaning. The color range is good too: HCS, Wolf Grey, Desert and Ranger green (this model).
I've spoken at length about their camouflage colours and the Ranger green, if you put it down in green foliage you will lose it in the bush LOL.
If you have to beat upon it, it can handle it although I don't recommend doing this to any knife.
The uncoated N690 is easy to clean and keep hygienic.
The knife displays good balance.
The DMP also comes in anti reflection Mil Spec black oxide coating.
At approx 5' in length, the Extrema Ratio DMP is certainly not too large to carry into the mountains hiking. Being a full flat ground drop point can only make it suitable for multi-tasking, no surprise as the drop point since it's popularity began from Bob Loveless (although not per se invented by him) has been the focus of many a knife manufacturer. Now Extrema Ratio have designed their version, simplistic but with all useful lines and geometries, tough enough to handle heavy handedness and yet nimble enough to allow for civilian usage around the camp and hiking.
The DMP is housed within an injection moulded reinforced Nylon scabbard, which can be easily cleaned even with the knife inserted.
ER talks about the tip is reinforced. I'd say rather than reinforced, i'd say the swedge is not as thin as in some of their other models and not designed as a thrusting tool. We are not talking "crow bar thickness" like on some old Strider models LOL! But remember knives are NOT for levering with unless it happens to be an Abalone pryer LOL!
Followup videos to come!
Easy to keep sharp with a ceramic rod (not supplied).
See my extensive blog to find out more.

Make no mistake, their crazy looking Forprene grips just work full stop.

Just one is all that is needed mate and this one would be a good one, i reckon. i have to do a bow hunting vid and think i'll take it along. The problem is now i have some action cameras but they are used for my other work and i don't really want to get them damaged bow hunting. i can stick one on the bow, we'll see??? i think the DMP is probably the most useful one of their knives for general outdoor stuff, other than the Dobermann IV, much bigger though. They did make a smaller version for hunting, not sure i they still make it though. Ontos is good just for one heck of a heavy duty 'thing' to put the greek back into English LOL! Got some more caving vids coming soon too.

@@BushCampingTools Awesome! Yeah, I went to the site and saw the Doberman IV. I think that's what I want because I have quite a few smaller fixed blades and folders from other companies, but I don't have a big, useful chopper. I like the different edge geometry, where you can use the blade for fine work and chopping tasks. I've thought about reprofiling a Golok that I have, but the handle on the Extremas is also well designed. Decisions, decisions.

@@BradGryphonn yeah to be honest i don't know anyone who owns a Dobermann IV and hates it. You can survive on a tropical island with that thing and whilst they don't list it in their "survival" knife category, I wouldn't be complaining if that was the only knife I had LOL.

Great knife! Good size and great design. Btw - you know that the eastern part of Europe has the most bears and wolves on the Kontinent? So if you make food like this in nature you can be sure to have some encounters sooner or later! Take care and enjoy nature.

I've done as close to real survival as possible, dumped on a deserted island northern Indonesian archipelago off Lombok, leatherman, coconut machete, quality carbon fishing rod, dive mask, snorkel, fins, two quality Japanese fishing lures, a tent and a means to light a fire. Along with one travelling companion. No full tang knives. No trees or branches to baton because there were no trees save for a half dozen cassava plants growing on this small patch of land in the sea "incase" local fishermen got stranded on the island, BTW no water either unless partly saline by digging a hole in the centre of this island. I guess it does depend upon where one is going to survive. But sure a big chunk of metal is less likely to fail under extreme conditions.

I think ER makes that model LOL, the Selvans! But seriously, trying to chop wriggly green pine branches that move wil lbe difficult. That's why I show it later on chopping similar sized branches (but of Hazel) over an immovable object (that large beech log). As always too thanks for watching!

Really nice and complete review. I have to say that I really like this knife and I bought two in different colours. But sadly I have to really point out a relevant issue! When u put in the Knive the sheath, it dulls the edge of the knife! You can really see it in your video at 7:18 whe u put it in the sheath. This little thing for leftie carry at the side of the edge moves outside when the knife slides in. Because its touched by the edge. Bouth knifes that I own and on yours as well as I see - same problem. Extrema Ratio is hopefully fix that. Definitely a design issue. Rest of it great Knife. Greetings from Germany
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, sorry i wrote a nice reply and then accidentally deleted it damn! Ok, yeah i know about this thing as when one inserts the knife, (it also happens for the giant mamba as well) the scabbard mechanism tends to push the knife to one side. it annoyed me to begin with but then i just adjusted the way i insert the knife. I think they really designed the system to extract it very quickly (if in a military situation- I guess). If one inserts it slowly, then it will not contact the glass reinforced plastic. I kind of treat mine like using a leather sheath, that too, one must be careful not to damage the welt of the leather, otherwise the stitching could become danged over time. Thanks for your comments!
@forestinpeace265
@forestinpeace265 2 жыл бұрын
@@BushCampingTools Thank u for ur reply.You are absolutely right that every knife have its own way to be used with its sheath and u have to adapt to it. But I find it really hard to put it in without to create the problem. Only when u really hard push the knifes back at the bottom of the sheath, when u insert it, u can avoid the issue. Especially in a situation where u have to draw or put it away quickly you have to rely at it. And you have no time to think about not to dull it. Thats a major drawback for a knife that is at this quality and useability(and at this price). I am sure extrema ratio will look at this problem. As I see it, they are really proud of the sharpness and quality of their knifes.Its a great company. Maybe after a few sharpenings it will fit better. It is not much of a space that it would fit in, without the problem. Always a pleasure to comment. Often I bought a knife only because of your honest and true review. You often show details that others don´t. Even with the problem at this knife I dont regret the purchase. Keep up the good work. Best regards :)

@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 10 ай бұрын
Hi there. I get asked this question once in a while about all the products seen here. So back in April 2018 I wrote a generalist response to such questions. here is the direct link to my response. hardcorecampingtools.blogspot.com/2018/04/telling-it-like-it-is-on.html But the long and short of it is, I do both, ie we buy and we get, however, as far as the "getting" goes, we get what we want to review. The explanation behind this is in that blog and will also answer your question as to why I'm not saying lots of bad words about them. I'm not sure how long you have been with the channel but we endeavour or rather it is our philosophy if you like, NOT to review junk in this channel as there is a plethora of channels doing this for years and years (I watch them too). Thanks for your comments. PS the blog is good (IMHO) because there I say lots lots more about the products in the videos as there is simply no time to put all of that stuff into the video and still keep it sort of watchable. Even more relevant today with the push to shorts.

Too right it is. I noted that some years back, a German knife forum got them to make a drop point in a limited number for their members. I came across it by accident on a German site and tried to get one but realised then it was only available for the forum members. Bummer, as it was a nice looking drop point. I asked ER if they would make one as a production model (heck it seems like many years ago now like way back just before i started the channel) but they only told me it was a limited edition run. Since then many years ago, I think this is first public available drop point they have made other than the recent Sethlans. And it is indeed nice. BTW it doesn't look like the one they made for the Forum, so I guess no Forum members would be upset by this as they still have a limited edition!

Naw, we picked the all the mint for making mint tea, LOL still got a fridge full of it as we went back there many times since that vid was made, yeah haven't had a roast lamb for ages and also liked it with mint sauce! When I got my NTOS, they hadn't made a Selvens, but it would be my choice now if I had to do it all over again for such a knife type.

Forprene is very soft. You can easily nick the handle with your fingernail
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 3 жыл бұрын
No it depends upon what Shore hardness the elastomeric alloy is made to. There are some Forprenes which will indeed be very soft for the end application and some which are as hard as a rock. This one is somewhere in between. I don't know the exact Shore hardness because I'm sure this is confidential information. What I was trying to point out was that for any knife if one puts it into the scabbard the wrong way and there is a correct way for whatever scabbard and knife combo then one can damage the either the scabbard or the knife. It's usually the scabbard, eg leather, kydex. I've got nicks and dents all over my long term users from them and no more than my beast of an old SPEC1 from Ontario and it has a Kraton grip. I know Kraton is not the same as Forprene but I just use it as an example of a composite polymer here. BTW an example of very hard Forprene composition can be found on some Nieto knives, I own one of them and I even asked them was it Forprene because it was so hard. FKMD also use hard formulations of Forprene, almost like hard plastic in some of their products too.

Ah why does everyone make me choose LOL? OK OK, you got it , in this order at number 1 first: Task J, MK2.1, DMP. let me know if you want me to make that breakdown of why because I do have some serious reasons and I'll post something on my Blog for all to read.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 2 жыл бұрын
BTW I can't see this comment any more for some reason: "Hey there, what would you say is your all time best knife. The most versatile and well built lifelong companion that you have? I know it’s a hard question. I’m very interested in buying a task J, I..." But I guess I have answered your question/ The AMF BTW is a great knife but I guess it depends upon where you are and what environment you intend to use it in. it can do anything but it's big to carry. TheT ASK J isn't going to be chopping down palm trees but if you're not in the tropics or intend to spend time there it's not going to be a problem. it's very strong, has a great strong point but can penetrate easily fish skin, and other game animals, but not a hunting knife; the DMP would be better at this for skinning and them followed by the MK2.1. BTW the MK2.1 is really meant to be used as in a no nonsense grip totally waterproof, low maintenance. each really have their virtues. To be honest, I think them releasing a medium sized drop point (the DMP) after all these years was really in response to many who wanted something not so military looking but at the same time catering for enlisted by the obvious styled cary system. The Task J I can easily see why it carries a commando insignia too, plus the scabbard has been designed for paratroopers in mind; something which is not entirely wasted upon civilian usage as i have pointed out in he various reviews of these scabbards over the years.

Hi, yeah, I was def getting F A T and it can be seen in videos from 7 months ago. Worse still my kid showed me a pic he took about 8 months ago and OMG I was growing Bo^Bs! by the looks of it. Years ago when I was climbing a lot, a girl friend of a climbing buddy said to me I had muscle where normal people don't have them. LOL I don't think I can get back to that state but I figured i had to do something about it and lose some weight, too much in front of the computer, no more competition road bike racing, trying to get back into caving again and exercising and no judo for over a year now, I was getting really unfit. The Mrs said I need to look after myself for our kid. She lost a lot of weight and is back to a size 6/8 max LOL and now working on the muscle tone. Since you asked I also made an "outdoor exercise video on this same trip the knife was filmed on, maybe I'll post it. I know many of us globally have been less active due to all of these crazy lockdown rules and regulation and that hasn't helped people to stay fit and healthy. Now I'm trying to help out other fir5end s who have gained weight with better diets and some serious exercises. Now for me I need to get rid of the flabby skin.
