Bushcraft Camp in the Snow - Fire, Shelter, Axe, Cooking Fish

I head into the forest alone to spend time in my Bushcraft Camp. The snow arrived in a storm overnight, so I got a fire going under the shelter of the tarp roof. I cook up some fish on the fire, boil water in the billy can for a coffee using a bushcraft pot hanger. Time in the woods when the snow is around is bliss, experiencing nature and the peacefulness of bird song and ASMR nature sounds. Thankfully, camp was still ok after the snow storm, the hunting tower and ladder were still strong, both lean to shelters were still sturdy. I decided to change the firepit a little. I also show you how I sharpen my axe on my leather belt.

You don't have to explain the necessity for supporting your family. This channel provides a valuable service for those who resonate with its content. It is entertaining, educational, thought provoking and showcases man, nature and beast (Jaxx) at their best! Lol! For those who can’t understand that you have chosen to earn a livelihood doing something you enjoy, and that poses no out-of-pocket expense for them- then…they have other issues going on. Haters will hate, supporters will support. Keep doing what you do. Follow your bliss!

@Devon Shirley as a native Louisiana, I think you will enjoy camping here. We are considered SPORTSMAN PARADISE. The further south you go, the more swamps and bayou's. It is a great state with tasteful cajun food and southern hospitality. You should visit Lafayette, Henderson, New Iberia, Beax Bridge. They are all in a 30 to 40 mile radius from each other. Ask about The Boiling Point - it is a mom and pop seafood place with great food. It is near New Iberia. Also a great restaurant in Henderson that is over the Achafalaya Basin...i can't recall the name of the restaurant but locals in Beau Bridge will know. Bon voyage!

This reminds me of Boy Scouts, through which I became an Eagle Scout. Our Scout Masters would have us pack our own trapping gear and other survival gear then leave us in the woods. Three times through out the week they would visit us and we were to prepare a meal from the forest for them and us. It was a great, rewarding, and humbling experience. At the end of the week they would rate each patrol in the troop points for best camp, meal, and survival techniques.

Build a "Tiki Hut" roof about 6 ft tall from crown to skirt and make the bottom "Skirt" about 6 ft diameter. A "Tiki Hut" roof looks like an upside down funnel with the spout cut off and leaving just the hole. Suspend it above the fire pit with the bottom edge of the roof about 7 foot high .. so as not to bump your head when walking around. and unless you build a huge bonfire there is no danger of the Tiki roof catching fire. Then drape the canvas tarp over the Tiki roof with a hole in it to match up with the hole in the Tiki roof. This will create a "Chimney" that will draw the smoke up and the canvas tarp will provide shelter as originally planned for. Love your videos Mike .. keep them coming. For the roof. An idea could be to do a simple square roof, the same height as your main bed(green tarp): extend it out to the walls directly in front of the main bed(using the existing trees as supports). Then extend the width of the roof to where your fire-pit is currently at ( just before the watch tower); using your tarp to cover the gap in roofing so that you can have it up for snow or down for sun. Remove the fire-pit and put it past the wall near your main bed and do the triangle set up, you could potentially end up enclosing it in some way and use the triangle space as a chimney section of your camp. Just my 2 cents

I spend a great deal of time outdoors,i always have. I also watch alot of videos online looking for tips and methods. I have to say that your interaction with veiwers is amazing. Asking for ideas on how to improve what your foing is a very refreshing and humble approach to things and i applaud you for it. Patience and humility are key components in survival situations and you seem to have plenty of both. 😁

another possible switch, use two tarps overhead, each angled, the high edges to the center but off set with one higher than the other.....Rain falling will hit one or the other, but smoke will find it's way out through the space, even if it's as narrow as just an inch or two....

Adding more tarps to the walls especially in the sleeping areas would stop most of the wind and snow getting inside, and protecting your gear and yourself from the elements! I would also add a roof to the center of the Survival Fort to help protect everything else from getting wet, and having piles of snow where the fire pit is. Try to make it so that you don't have additional work cleaning up snow, or getting your fire wet, would also help in keeping more heat inside, so everyone stays warmer!

I'm really digging the Wessex Blades Leuku knife. It reminds me a lot of a butcher knife from Cutco or Old Hickory knives (both are popular here in the US; Old Hickory is a division of Ontario knives and Cutco is a stand-alone company). I'm loving the scandi grind on the blade and how the grind is higher toward the front and middle of the belly of the blade and how it's much lower toward the tip. So much of the work a knife does is in the front and middle of the belly. The shape of the handle reminds me a lot of your Lignum (?) Steeler knife. Cold Steel makes a machete that has a similar blade profile that they call a bolo blade. The concept is really brilliant: much of the weight is toward the head of the blade, so when you swing it to chop things, the momentum carries the blade deeply or through the material. I have one of these machetes and they work as advertised. It's tough to keep a good edge on one when you use it a lot and hit things you shouldn't lol......if I may say, the Matt Graham design from Condor looks to be a pretty good rendering of an all-around survival/bushcraft knife that's a little larger. It seems to be able to do a lot of things really well. I appreciate your channel and your efforts not only to provide a high quality production but that you want to provide for your family as well. Bear in mind that KZfaq (or YouScrooge as I like to call it at times) has decided to stop showing firearms-centered channels or those that feature guns. This makes me extremely angry and I've contemplated boycotting KZfaq and Google as well. I also understand the plight of folks who depend on KZfaq income for their livelihood, so I've held back a bit on my actions. Still, it's very disturbing, especially here in the US, that a channel would see fit to cut content that has been a part of the culture and heritage for over 200 years. It's very frustrating. I'm hoping the Google executives reconsider their position on this issue. Keep doing what yer doing and bless you and your family.

I gotta say Mike right now you're the best bushcraft youtuber right now because you're a hard worker and most of all you respect your subscribers. Some other bushcraft youtuber whose name I'm not gonna mention used to be number one at least in my eyes and now when the money is pouring he became lazy he makes one video a month and uploads a part of it each week I mean that is just disrespectful the subscribers gave you a chance to do what you love and make money out of it. Long story short keep up the good work you're amazing and for me you're number one 👍👍💪💪

I wouldn't think an out house would serve any purpose in the woods. I'm not an outdoors man, so my knowledge is limited on the subject. But, why build a structure and shit in the same place until the hole is filled and you have to do it all again? Why not just take your shovel behind that big tree over there, do what you gotta do, and quickly bury it so you don't step in it later?

As for the wall that is blocking the air flow you should take out the bottom logs so that wind could come through the bottom of the wall but also have the top part of it to stop from getting too much wind

You're awesome to watch, and I learn amazing skills and survival techniques from watching your videos!! Some stuff I already knew, and some stuff I'm just learning, me and my wife are living in a 6 man dome tent in Lewiston Maine, during the winter right now, it's Thursday November 16th, 2018, & I need to get another 15 gallon drum of propane, how to get our first snow storm supposedly, in a few hours.... Kind of wish I had a wooded stove sometimes, but, it's nice to be able to enjoy the heat instead of running around to the point then I'm getting heated from me sweating from working all the time, plus, it's hard for me to tell if I'm getting heated up or warmed up correctly, when I'm running around collecting firewood raising my temperature anyways!! So that, by the time I'm finally relaxing from running around collecting firewood, and keeping the fire maintained, I finally can notice whether I need to be warmer.... Lol bahahahaha.... but, when I'm using my propane heater my Mr Heater help buddy Big Buddy 18000 BTU, propane heater, it really helps us big-time, and keeps us warm through the chilled nights of 11° to 12° degree weather!! Just got to Hatchet or tomahawk, survival Hatchet, where can I find a sharpening stone, any suggestions my friend? Definitely enjoy watching, learning and growing from your videos, keep em' coming.... We are about to build a tiny pallet house, we're going to try to use nothing but pallet materials, I might purchase a decent box of nails, can use the back of my Hatchet for a hammer, and I might need to get a couple metal brackets for the roof, for the framing on the roof, and maybe some as seen on TV rubber cement sealing cans, but besides that, I should be good for my materials, I'm hoping.... I had applied for housing, back in June 1st of 2018, and now its November 16th 2018.... LoL... Bahahahahahaha..... So much for us getting housed before winter, whereas I started planning in the summertime.... so we decided we'll take care of ourselves in this situation where no one else seems to be helping, the whole reason I was going the housing route, and case manager route, what is because the way I was doing things obviously wasn't working very well, and I figured being helped or guided along the process by a professional who deals with this on an everyday manner, would be the way to go, naturally! I'm disabled, and I get SSDI and SSI for a 6th income source of money, and survival, for bills. And even with me having guaranteed rent every month of my own, I still have not been housed?? Lol... and it seems as though everyone else I talk to you about this, they all mostly say the same thing, they'll say, " wow, you guys haven't been housed yet? ", But yet, the one person that I would hope would be thinking that way, seeing my case manager, are not thinking that way, according to the way things have been playing out with my management of my case! So with the way things seem to be working, as far as me seeking out help, and getting helped, I would rather build a shity tiny pallet house with four walls a roof and floor, with a door, and maybe some insulation, and we'll be happy, just a safe, and warm place for us to relax, sleep, eat, and pretty much function on the down time of day, and that's all we really need!! Love the videos, wish I had more money to help support your channel, I've been supporting my Local KZfaq friend, Tyler, at " Secureteam " & his amazing channel, so as long as I'm doing better financially soon, I'll definitely get you back bro, whereas I really enjoy your videos and knowledge on the outdoors and survival, thanks man. Take care, and look forward to seeing more videos, Jeff W........... 🤘🖕😉👍⛺
