This played at my local Wal-Mart about 3 years back

I'd forgotten about this song until yesterday, when, in a staff meeting to tell us all how shit we are, the manager said '49 times'. That was it. Just sat there zoning out to the lyrics of this winner.

"You see, his blood, it drained into the boards, I had to change them" always makes me laugh. It is horrifically unexpected.

I love the implication of Luke asking Obi Wan a perfectly normal question and instead he goes into a long-form tangent to avoid the question by describing an overly illogical creature scenario that he and his father fought for years.

I come here and listen to this song atleast once a year. It has a special place in my heart. First time I heard this was on a class trip in the Austrian mountains. We had no internet in the isolated log cabin we lived in and no cellphones where allowed, but someone brought one anyways. only thing he had downloaded where bad lip reading songs, making them the only music we had and damn we heard them alot, to the point where we knew them word for word and sung them as if it was the last time we'd ever sing anything. snow everywhere, the most beautiful days of my life so far. Beautiful nature, lovely ppl and experiences that altered my character in alot of ways. I already finished school a year ago, but I feel like I am still not ready to leave it behind. Especially when listening to this song, I once again feel like the exited child or young teenager I used to be back then.

I've had this on repeat ever since you uploaded it.

I figured out the meaning to the lyrics.. very sad and profound.. The "chicken head creature" is the dark side of the force. The "Bushes of Love" refers to the dark side using a person's love as the means to draw them to the dark side. Anakin battled this in his Love of his mother and her loss, and then with his love of Padme. "49 times" here Ben is referring to how many times he helped Anakin battle his inner demons. Recall it started in his training as a child when Yoda talked about FEAR of losing his mother as the path to the dark side. Ben as his teacher helped Anakin battle his demons until he finally lost the inner battle at Mustafar and was fully overcome by the dark side through his fear of losing Padme. The battle on and leading up to Mustafar was the 49th time. The "chicken head creature" is the dark side and the "Bushes of love" is the fear of losing that which you love. "His face was ripped off and screaming horrible" Ben is referring to his battle with Anakin on Mustafar where he cut him down, dismembered, and watched him burned alive. Ben was so traumatized at having killed his own padwan, he disassociates the whole series of events. "he was screaming something awful" Ben referring to Anakin with his face burnt and disfigured screaming in agony. Ben doesn't admit HE killed Anakin, he blames the dark side, (the chicken head beast) as the one that ripped Anakin apart. Obi Wan even today can not bear this guilt at having failed his Padwan, at having to cut him down, and instead blames the dark side. Recall this was reinforced in the movie when Ben says "Vader" killed your father. This dissociation continues when he talks about "his blood drained into the floor". Here, Obi Wan is referring to an unseen event after his battle with Anakin. Anakin's blood had soaked Obi Wan. Recall Obi Wan dismembered Anakin when directly overhead. Given the pitched battle, hot atmosphere, and the massive trauma, even a light saber that cauterizes still managed to spray Obi Wan with Anakin's blood in that strike. We don't see this in the movie because it was too dark to see (and also too dark to portray in a PG movie). This blood that sprayed Obi Wan's polished leather boots then seeped onto Obi Wan's ship floor boards as he departed Mustafar. Obi Wan later (we don't know when) saw the blood causing him to have a grief stricken melt down and remove the floor decking to rid every last drop of Anakin's blood. He had to wash Anakin's blood from his hands literally and symbolically. You can still see the anguish in his face and  his 1,000 mile disassociated stare when he recounts the story to Luke and then changes the subject. It wasn't Obi Wan that cut down Anakin in his view, it was the dark side that caused that fate. When Obi Wan (as a force ghost) was later confronted and called out by Luke on Dagobah regarding his dissociation, Obi Wan back pedals to Luke saying "it's all a mater of perspective". "Every day I worry all day" throughout the song Obi Wan is warning Luke about the perils of emotional attachment. The threat of the dark side is ever present, lurking, waiting to ambush us if we allow our love to control us. Recall Vader tried to use Luke's love of his sister against him in their final battle "if you wont' turn perhaps she will". So powerful was the fear of losing a loved one, recall It was the only moment Vader was able to seduce Luke with the Dark side as he suddenly lashed out at Vader in rage. Obi Wan did not want the fate of Anakin to repeat itself and why he is "worried all the time". Ben was worried the fate that befell Anakin would be repeated on Luke. He says this throughout the song as he does in the movies. Wise Jedi masters like Obi Wan and Yoda were always concerned (worried all day) their padwans would be lured to the dark side by having their love manipulated through fear of loss of those they loved. The end of the song where Luke has a romantic love dream foreshadowing of his sister accentuates the point that even before they met, the Dark side was attempting to seduce and twist his love to an unnatural dark state. We see how the dark side is represented by a distorted non-human abomination (chicken head with duck feet). The only human trait it had was a"woman's face" We know that both Anakin and Luke where tempted by the dark side through the WOMEN in their lives; Anakin with the loss of his mother and fear of losing Padme and Luke at the fear of losing his sister as Vader taunted him. The dark side uses the face of a woman to draw them over which was true in every case. "Hold me when I open like a flower hold me right" Here in this Song's stanza, Ben is reflecting on the sad irony of his sacrifices to walk the the path of a Jedi Master. He had to forego the companionship of a woman. He is reaffirming to himself of his need to walk the path of the force, which is of peace and love, and yet ironically being denied companionship in his own life. It's a sad irony he further reflects upon when singing he has "not had to bake for a woman in a long time". But note there are TWO inner monologue conversations taking place here. He is reflecting on his sacrifice of companionship in the physical world but when sings "When I open like a flower hold me right" he is referring to himself reaching his destiny and full potential of the force and is foreshadowing his own death (at Vader's showdown). "Hold me when I open like a flower" is Ben's "ode" to the force and akin to our saying "death's sweet embrace in the hereafter". He is contemplating his death and being at one with the force. It's an amazing point of the song that Ben is reflecting on both his past and sacrifice of the flesh and at the same time foreshadowing his future battle, death and convergence with the force which he expresses as an embrace. The entire "hadn't had to bake for a long time" Stanza is Obi Wan reflecting aloud and rhetorically much to Luke's chagrin who only responds awkwardly "I think my cooking's awesome". Ben casually ignores Luke's comments and continues his ode to the force and reflection upon his life's path. He even reflects on an old love interest (he kept her picture). It's an endearing part of the song where we see Ben deep in personal reflection being juxtaposed against Luke's naive boyish charm. The dark side is always there waiting to use and twist our love against us through the fear of loss. No one knew this better then Ben. This was THE central theme and unseen antagonist of the entire star wars story arc and what is being expressed in this song so brilliantly. On earth, in our universe, we give evil a name and a body with horns and a tail. Here, the song boldly embodies the unseen antagonist of the Star Wars Arc, the dark side, as a "chicken head with duck feet" creature. The song also goes on to give form to the main thematic threat and trappings of the Star Wars story arc, that of a Dark Side seducing you by your love and fear of loss, and names that form in the "bushes of love" metaphor. This song gives form to the formless and makes the unknown known.

Unironically slaps - and it has a rather deep message about them bushes. The secret, is to stop worrying about wtf is hiding in them bushes and just let go. When you stop checking the bushes is when you find what you’re looking for.

The way "49 times" hits is the same way my ptsd flashbacks hit. This whole song is ptsd-core in a very cathartic way. Why else would I have been listening for 8 years to a song making fun of a movie I've never even watched?
