Yeah that was a weird and troubling example. I imagine they were just trying to shoehorn in AI because it's a hot tech right now, and they had to try to find an example of machine learning used for a socially conscious purpose, and the timely Covid angle was too tempting to pass up. They definitely should have passed it up. 2 Things: 1) Are companies really paying less attention to profit and more to diversity, social responsibility and climate change? or, because their customers are now more into these things, they embrace the issues too? That way they can sell more...and, make profit. 2) Can The Economist define what "diversity" is? I am very interested in the the Mckinsey study quoted. According to this research, diverse management in companies outperform non-diverse teams (I think they said, by 30%). If every single person on earth is different, how come a team (a group of people) be less or more diverse ? How do you measure diversity?

Companies should stay out of politics. Focus on products, services and innovation. Build better teams and listen to what employees want and need to succeed. Today many want a better work life balance. Healthcare is highly important and so is mental health. It’s always sad to see a company that gave huge executive bonuses reaching into the 10s of millions while laying off workforce. Who’s more important? Companies need to adopt an employee first attitude because the engineer you just let go might be the one who would have innovated and helped pioneer a new product. Just my thoughts.

I agree it is rather indicative of an overthrow, and the issue comes with the assumed beneficial conclusion of such an action. The 'needs' of all the people on Earth are diverse, not common. It is the age old conundrum that has a leader trying to satisfy everyone, and satisfying no one in the end. Not to mention, overtly bringing private entities into the realm of the state is not novel, and, regardless of intention, it only ends up going in one direction. A state controlled economy, which is an environment that harms workers more than any other.

Actually the term "woke" is now used in the same way that "fake news" or "election integrity" are used. As dog whistles to rile up right wingers and justify hypocritical, antisocial, and/or corrupt behavior by conservatives. It is the weaponization of the language used to point out right wing failures into an attack on their opponents and justification for further wrongdoing. It is genuinely orwellian because it robs society of words that would otherwise condemn the right wing, poisoning those words and twisting social discourse for the worse.

The film did not mention a lot about the real **Go woke and go broke** . The real woke issues are transgenderism, homosexuality, pronouns, feminism and racial diversity. The film only addressed the fifth, which is the most widely amiable one to people. When companies go broke from being woke is usually due to the first three. This is a poor and disappointing video!

Globalism is never the answer. In order to care about the world, share profits, become more environmental friendly a company must create value and profit or there are no resources to make things better. A company must care about their consumers and adding value, their employees and adding value and their profit- all three of these legs of the Business triangle must appreciate and work synergistically with the other, or there is no business, no profit, no value and no chance to increase the standard of living, protect the environment and produce more efficiently and cleanly and share those resources with others. The standard of living, health resources and the poverty level across the globe has never been in better shape historically and this is due to capitalism, value added, the leisure and know how to share and continually strive for cleaner and greener production. The markets due this naturally. People know there is only one planet and we need to respect and honor it, those companies who are rogue and take and don’t give value go bankrupt and cease to exist. We can never lose sight of adding value and creating wealth and profits or we become like state owned pre-planned communist/socialist nations where things fall into disrepair, no wealth or value is created, technology stalls and the environment suffers as a result.

I didn't expect to see environmentalism lumped in with 'woke-ness'. Though for mine, the idea of 'woke' is synonymous with 'respect', so maybe it could work. I like your point about an ever increasing woke culture driven by younger, more savvy consumer/ investors. That eases the stress (a bit) of a neo-liberal appraoch to environmental and social responsibility. But "yeah nah" (as we say in Australia), I won't be holding my breath for the capatalistic stranglehold we're in to do little more than ease some consciences, while we get set to exploit the land in ways never seen before to satisfy the hungry ghost of consumerism. The dream-illusion (fool's paradise) we are living in is that we can, 'have our cake and eat it too', when it comes to meeting the greatest existential crisis of our time. It's a bit tragic :/

My understanding is it’s basically just an attempt to empathise with marginalised people and to try to be conscious of how your actions and implicit biases harm them. Also I think a big part is attempting to hold people to the same standard which is where ‘cancel culture’ comes in. But ‘corporate wokeness’ is essentially companies pandering to this crowd in an attempt to get them to buy from them I.e. ‘speak with you wallet’ but it’s all virtue signaling and most companies do not live up to what their professed values are. Idk if this is right but it’s just how I see ‘wokeness’.

"the benifits of diversity are more innovation (innovative thinking)" how? In a country that is predominantly white, where predominantly men are competing for high earning positions, thanks to hypergamy, it's reasonable that most of those positions will be held by white men. Companies don't care about diversity, they care about profit and if appearing to care about diversity is better for profit, then they will pretend to care about diversity. The argument for, forced gender and racial diversity quotas being a way to tap into innovative thinking is not only BS, but racist and sexist. Preferential hiring is not fair, no matter what. Saying that people with different skin colour or gender will think differently is exactly what woke culture is saying does not happen. So much so, that today, we are not even allowed to recognise the difference between genders by using gender pronouns. When you apply for a company that advertises the fact that it employs 50% women and has over 50% women in management but you get passed over for a job by a woman who's linked in profile shows you she is way less qualified than you, should you think, well maybe her news agent job and unrelated course will give the company more innovation than my years experience in the field(sales) and 3rd level RELATED deploma.
