One year since Hurricane Maria, local businesses in Puerto Rico are struggling to recover. Tucked in the old city of San Juan, Barrachina is a tourist hotspot. Most of the restaurant’s business comes from visitors hoping to sip on piña coladas and try the classic Puerto Rican dish, mofongo. After Hurricane Maria hit, Barrachina was one of almost 10,000 small businesses affected by the storm.

My wife and I decided to go to San Juan on our honeymoon instead of going on a cruise. We were there this past February. We had a great time and I would not hesitate to go back. In fact we will probably be back in the next few years.

@@carcol04 You can't create electricity and import it with water to the island. The damage was devastating. There is no instant fix.

@@carcol04 PRs electrical infrastructure is old, very frail and has been mismanaged for decades. Even if you install new poles and wires on a daily basis, it would still take a long while to get power to everyone. In parts of Virginia and Washington they couldn't get power to them for months I had read after a severe snow storm hit the area. There was an unbelievable run on generators and firewood. It's not that easy. My friend and if you're in PR right now, God bless you.

Every person I've met from PR has always been kind, and that comes from enormous strength. As long as Americans dismiss and ignore PR, we are missing the bigger picture, be it democratic or economic.

A lot of people are being so hateful with their comments. Aside from corruption (which is a problem almost every government has to deal with), criminal activity and the island’s debt, Puerto Rico is a beautiful destination with some of the kindest people on the planet. I would recommend visiting before passing judgement on the people that live there and spitting hate on hurricane survivors. If you’re thinking about visiting or have visited Puerto Rico in the past like this comment and share your experience with me! 😊

Why don't you talk about the real Puerto Rico and do research about other businesses in the Island before blaming Maria for everything.

Well, if we no longer are a U.S territory, it will actually be plenty beneficial. No longer we will have to serve in the army of another country, since the U.S. will lose one of the most strategic points in the Caribbean. Then, the obliteration of the Jones act that doesn't allow us to commerce with directly with countries other than the United States of Amnesia. Also, without the massive competition of North American big corporations thanks to their economies of scale, we would be able to easily develop a better market for ourselves, since this corporations take billions and billions of dollars each year, without even paying taxes in the island, and with minimum employee benefits. We have been a U.S. Commonwealth for well over a 100 years now, and, I'm not implying that we don't have any benefits right now from the U.S., we do have food stamps, federal scholarships, and they helped us during the Maria disaster, which is nice from them. What I'm trying to prove here are two things. First, that the U.S. doesn't want to leave us and let us become independent, since we bring them plenty of benefits, to such a point that they recently imposed a Board of Directors on the island. Second, that when someone says "the U.S. should kick P.R." as a threat, well, they should now that this is actually no threat. Of course we will lose some benefits, but we will have plenty of shackles broken too. That would be all for now. Good day.
