how great that your daughter will have this mindset and be on board with this at such a young age. Will save her so many hours of going through piles of stuff throughout her lifetime. That is maybe the most "wasteful" thing of all of this is the time we have to spend going through stuff and time is something we cannot get back. Wonderful inspiration

My almost 7yr old watched the video earlier how many toys should you keep, and when she seen how many kids she had and how many toys they owned, her eyebrows raised and she said Nuhuh mom..then..I want small Legos lol..I said if you want small Legos then we need to choose some items that aren't serving their purpose and get them out of the way first. I have been trying my hardest to slowly ease her into this way of thinking. Last 4yrs have been more so about identifying emotions and how to express them properly, how to not react to someone instantly from an emotional place, take deep breaths and come from a loving place bc you will be heard alot easier, and how you word things matters, perspective is everything, treating other's the way you want to be treated, positivity, being responsible for animals, starting school and all that jazz..lol so now I need to get some focus on the outside of things, and finding Dawn was a perfect timing Blessing!!! I wish I had the understanding of how much our things cause stress on us daily this entire time! But I'm Great full to have that eye opener now!! Thank You Dawn for All the Truly Authentic, Mindset, Perspective, Encouraging Videos You make!!!! You Are doing God's Work! And Magnificently!!

I saved a blouse for more years than I want to admit. I kept telling myself that I would eventually wear it. Even though the one time I wore it, I didn't like the way it looked. I lost weight and it was too big. I noticed a stain on it and threads coming loose. It went in the trash. All that time I held onto garbage. That experience helped me to let go of some more things that I needed to part with.

I'm getting close to a plateau. I've gotten rid of furniture, clothes, books, kitchenware, knickknacks, papers, holiday decorations, yet there's still too much. I try not to be too hard on myself on the first pass in an area. I'm going back in for the third time in some areas and find just the repitition helps. You said it in another video - it's a muscle we need to strengthen. One bar I set for myself is making a pact to make a donation run on x day. I challenge myself 2 ways: don't be so wimpy that you only take 1 box. And also, make the trip worth your time/gas. That said, someone's coming Mon to take 2 more pcs of furniture. I've got 4 things in garage to post on fb to try to sell. 3 of them are shelves and storage cabinets I've emptied. My basement is really looking good!

Just from reading your comment, you seem to be making great progress. . Good job! Maybe you're not "failing" as you seem to think. It might just be a slow process. Maybe consider taking some detailed pictures at some point so you can look back in 5 months and realise you're making progress. You're on the right track!

Thanks for this revealing video. I feel the pain when we throw out food. Cooked, uncooked, leftovers or expired. It just makes me depressed. And there are times when I even comment to my family that I can see my father’s face in front of me when I do it. My parents grew up as children of the depression. They were generous in every way, including the food they cooked for us. But throwing it away was another matter. Waste. My dad always said that we could take as much food as we wanted, but whatever we took we needed to eat. He would say take a small helping, and if you want more you can have more. Both of my parents were great cooks and would count the potatoes and weigh the meat to help them determine how much food would be needed when we were having company. And everybody loved eating at our house. Watching your video is making me realize that (I feel) throwing out food is a dishonor to the wonderful parents I had. It might not be the same for others, but I now know why I feel the way I do about it. Thank you so much for sharing this. Oh, and I am a minimalist in a lot of ways myself and love throwing out or giving away useless things. So there it is. A new understanding. Thank you.

Joanne, my mom was a child of the depression as well. And I have a lot of the same mindset towards food. It bothers me intensely to waste food of any kind.. I've even stopped buying in bulk because of this. Someone who was moving and could not take her frozen food gave me a lot of frozen meat. I found out as I was unpacking it that there was some liver in that pile. I HATE liver. But I don't waste food. No one else wanted it, so I cooked it and did my darndest to disguise the flavor. I ate it. It was icky, but I survived. And I'm the person who will take home your turkey carcass to later make stock, if you we're just going to throw it away. I said all that to show how much I understand you!

Thank you for this! It was very helpful. I’ve been decluttering since last June but still have tons of stuff. I’ve hit several plateaus and we are in a very busy season in our lives which is preventing us from making progress quickly. BUT I realized I made more progress than I realized last week when we had friends over for dinner. I was getting out dinner plates when I noticed a big chip in one of them. I immediately threw the plate away without really thinking about it and continued setting the table. My friend went to throw something away and said, “Did you know there’s a plate in the trash?” I told her I had thrown it away because it had a big chip in it and I couldn’t use it. She said, “Oh wow, I wish I could do that. I would’ve have kept it and just not used it.” It made me realize that that is exactly what I would have done in the past! It may be a little thing, but I was excited about the realization that I now have a different mindset that keeping something you can’t use doesn’t make sense. I’ve also been noticing lately how much faster it is to clean my house and keep it clean. I’m looking forward to the time when I’m “finished” decluttering. In the meantime, I’m realizing that I’m building those muscles that you talked about in your last video. Thank you for sharing your experience and your wisdom!

Great video and thoughts! As I was decluttering/Minimizing my bookshelf I remember there were two big eyesore airplane books and the 1st thing my husband said was "No!" not because he hasn't even picked those books up for 15 years (literally) but because his exact words were "Those books were $30 each!". Oh the money spent on things was *the* argument for the 1st half of my journey but thankfully it did stop. My husband is very sentimental, remembers what things cost, and likes to hold onto all the stuff. I'm the opposite besides the money- but now I am so careful what I buy/bring in. Those airplane books are in the attic in his bins but he still has them lol. I am not making fun of him, decluttering/organization comes easier for me and I can understand how others feel because of my husband.

Jess... I could have written the same story about my husband. He is so sentimental and so resistant to getting rid of things. We know our grown kids don't want our stuff, furniture or whatever so I think we should get rid of it when it's our choice. He does not agree. Sadly at almost 70 years old for both of us, the time will be here before we know it.

Dawn, thank you SO much for all the work you put behind these videos. Your enthusiasm is encouraging & your laughter is contagious. I wanted to share a neat concept I learned in school - the concept of "sunk cost" - which is cost that has already occurred and cannot be recovered by any means. Ouch! Knowing that I will never recover the price tag I paid for an item, helps me remember that cost should not factor into the decision process of whether I keep an item or not.

I found your channel a few days ago. I'm enjoying each episode. I've read Jim Becker's book. My journey started 5 years ago. My husband and I started decluttering. Then I asked him what he wished I would get rid of. My books that I bought and didn't read, and my piano that I didn't play. Gone. He asked the same question and then he got rid of stuff. 4 years of decluttering. Then we moved from a 1500 square ft house to 2200 sq ft condo. I had 2 girlfriends help me move in. With their help, I got rid of 7 van loads of stuff. A year later, I'm getting rid of stuff we haven't used in a year. It's been a process. It feels good. No guilt. I haven't missed 99% of it.

Hi Dawn! So glad you are feeling better! I think I've commented before that I'm in the middle of decluttering and I feel so good about the progress I've made but you're right. I still look around and almost feel like I haven't done much because there is still sooo muuuch stuuuff! I'm having a hard time going through baby clothes my kids have worn because there are so many precious memories that go along with them. I've tried to pick a few but it always ends up being a pile. I keep going back to the pile and even if I part with a few more things I feel like it's progress. I'm trying to be kind to myself but I know how much more I will enjoy our home without all the STUFF. sorry for the long message :o)

I’m definitely in that stage 2. I’ve gotten rid of the easy stuff and then some but I still look around and feel like there’s too much stuff and I need to get rid of more. I think you’re absolutely right that we get so accustomed to our surroundings so quickly that we don’t even realize how far we’ve come (which is also how we get into such a cluttered state in the first place!) so it’s good to step back and remember the progress we’ve made. My mom is visiting and is seeing our place since I got rid of some storage furniture and she was like “yeah it’s so much more open and nice without them.” I think I would have said it seemed slightly empty without the expected bookshelves and another cabinet in our dining room (we still have a low sideboard) but I’m really enjoying and appreciating the openness and airiness of less storage furniture. But I still have too much stuff in drawers. Too much of the “just in case” or “no longer needed/never should have purchased” items that I need to tackle. I want my drawers and cabinets to be less cluttered inside and more open and airy.

After listening to several audiobooks and watching endless KZfaq videos, the entire process is best summed up, as you shared from your viewer ’.. keeping more than we need is greed...’ I totally agree with this and your discussion of all of the individuals who could possibly find value in those things we have long forgotten about. This was what I needed! I’ve started KonMari at least three times but have never finished. I’ve read Not of This World so I’m right there on why spiritually it’s best to simplify. I know my “why” BUT I get overwhelmed easily ... This video has helped me realize I’ve done my “easy” pass and now I need to start back up but I think room by room is much more likely to get results. I love the question you asked: “What would someone else say is important to you based on how you’re storing things?” That’s really powerful. God bless! Love your channel.

If we vacation in Florida during the winter we take the children’s almost outgrown summer clothes to wear during our stay. We leave them behind when we return which lightens our luggage and we plan to get clothes that fit when spring arrives at home.

I feel stuck. I started purging in 2011. I did the bulk of it in two weeks and have since paired down more and maintained pretty well. We are getting ready to move into a smaller house. As I box up our items I rethink about their usefulness. I've gotten rid of a few things but for the most part I'm finding we are using regularly everything we have. It still feels like we have too much stuff but I'm at a loss as to what to do. I almost think I need to fix the way I think instead of getting rid of more. We make a lot of our stuff. I grow and preserve food, make soap, homeschool, etc and my husband builds everything from our furniture to our new house and we have a small tech business. We have more tools then your average person but they are all used regularly and we are careful to pick tools that serve multiple functions. At the end of the day it feels like too much. However, we have no desire to go back to purchasing everything or go back to working for someone else. I would love to know if I'm the only person in this situation.

I am stuck in phase two as well. I relate to your situation somewhat, as I homeschool, and we have self-employed businesses. The needed materials and equipment takes space. The homeschool things will not always be here, so I try to see them as consumables that will eventually be sold or donated. Still, I want to find a way to have fewer things because of the time it takes trying to tidy and clean the house. I have decluttered regularly over the years. Now I'm stuck not wanting to get rid of things and at the same time wanting to get rid of things.

freshnewday it's really nice to know I'm not alone. I'm hoping our problem will be solved with our move. We currently have everything (business and all) in a 2,000 sf home and garage. When we move we will have two buildings. We are just about done with the first. It's going to eventually be the shop but we will be living in it until we can sell our current house. It's 1,400 sf. The house we will construct after the sale will be 1,200 sf. So we are really only gaining 600 sf BUT our tech business, tools/farm/garden stuff will be completely separate from the household except for my desk where I keep the business books, it will be in the house. I just can't give up the independence of being able to make our own money, create and preserve our own food and make what we need to be an official minimalist. At the same time I have to live with a brain that cannot function with clutter. I have always preferred function over fashion, I hate knick knacks and I dream about an ultra minimalist house. I'm just now beginning to realize that independence and true minimalism may not be able to exist together. What I can do is make sure nothing else comes in unless it is replacing something going out. I will also do quarterly runthroughs of all my spaces just to make sure everything is actually being used. I hope it will take less time to maintain then what we have now but it will probably be similar. The most important thing is time with loved ones and we have plenty of that since we control when we work. We aim for a four day work week and it seems to be working out.

If only there was a "LOVE" button here! What you have said is just where I am at now! 3 years ago, I remember saying to our realtor, "We did not realize we had so much stuff! " And then, saying again, after multiple purges, "How do we have STILL have so much stuff?" The "Brain Adjust!" That is genius. My brain has adjusted and I will try to remember this from now on. Our house looks like yours now, with only the necessities and cleared out spaces. It makes me feel like we are on vacation even when we are home. PEACE :) The "Simplicity Craving" is real! And the "pain center" thing..I do not have that at all, but my husband is experiencing that now. He sees my craving of simplicity and knows it is my mindset now. I need to remember that he is still at the pain part with some things, namely because of the "original cost/ value placement" thing. So after watching this, I explained to him about the "having value" concept. Can we just stop right now and frame the quote, "Just because I paid money for it, it does not mean anything." Yes! That should be framed, haha So we had this rug. From IKEA. We had since replaced it with a new area rug that fit the space better and that I loved more. The past rug was stored in a roll in the garage. I wanted so badly to bless someone with it bc it was not serving a purpose for us and no one that we knew personally could use it. It no longer had value for us. It was tough for my DH to see that it could be let go to someone other than family, and even if we did not get money for it. After it was donated, I could still see the pain in his face. Watching and listening to you here gives me hope that this journey really is a process and that eventually our loved ones will arrive at the same point as we may be in this minimalist mindset. This has been my most favorite upload to date!!

I started in January and was doing well and we just decided to move to a smaller house next year. We’ve been here 28 years and accumulated a lot of things from our parents homes when they passed away. Now I have collectibles to hopefully sell and it is overwhelming! Suddenly it’s not just organizing this house but getting ready for a smaller one!

This was exactly what I needed to watch today. It actually made me cry. I have gotten rid of SO much and yet I was just telling my husband last night that I cannot believe how far I still have to go. My brain adjusts too quick and I just want more and more simplicity. I tackled 3 kitchen cabinets last night... kids clothes today. 7 t-shirts and 3 church shirts is my goal. It’s a huge shift for us but it’s so so good. I love the concept of keeping the favorites and just letting the rest go. What a journey! I’m all in! Not stopping until I reach that sweet simplicity.

I am so grateful that she talked about how quickly our brain adjusts to getting rid of things and feeling like we haven't made any progress even though we have. This was amazing to me because all the time I feel like I spend a ton of time cleaning or decluttering and then look around my house and think what was I doing this whole time?! It's really frustrating because I usually am a pretty motivated person and I try really hard to my myself and my home better but when that happens I start to feel like what is the point in doing this if within a day or two I am not feeling like things are easier or less cluttered and I have to put more work in? But this video and a few of the other videos have helped me realize that 1) I am probably not getting rid of enough stuff because of my guilt because I made a mistake purchase and feel I'm obligated to keep things and 2) things might be better than I realize and I might be making more progress than it seems at that moment. My last thing I realize is that we have to give ourselves time to see our system work because every now and then I go wow cleaning that area was actually easier this time! We just have to give ourselves grace and freedom to love ourselves.

The whole idea of choosing your favorites, like you mentioned, has made a world of difference for me! I’ve followed Fly Lady since I was a kid and my mom was into it, but all I ever did was get rid of the worst, most unloved items I had. Which is good, but I never got the full benefit of minimalism until I went through my closet and my kitchen and just chose the few items I really really liked and needed and let go of the rest. It’s a much more freeing way of looking at decluttering to focus on what to keep than what you’re getting rid of. And it takes SO much less time. I so appreciate how you help us have these brain shifts that make a world of difference. Thank you!!

I find it helps to use “need something, got something” groups. People who actually need or want the things I’m not using getting them doesn’t make me think of the money used. I still have trouble with things I’m gifted though. I usually keep an unwanted item for a year before I feel okay donating.

You are really helping me. I am 70, and just want to declutter. I am not moving, but I have let things pile up. I lost my job in June, so I have the time now. I have learned from you that I don’t have to throw things in the trash or donate bag If I am not ready. I just went thru my cooking utensils drawer. I have a lot of stuff in there. I knew I needed 2 long but shallow containers. I ended up cutting a thin box up and making them to fit my need. I pulled out stuff I haven’t used but I actually put them in my china cabinet drawer for now. I am not ready to start a stack of boxes to donate. But I have started the first step of the process. I also went thru my paper files and throw away lots of old stuff. I really appreciate your videos and your wisdom, both with the decluttering and with the devotional time with you and your sister. Thank you and all your family for what you are doing. God Bless you.

Greetings from rural Australia. What has been my biggest victory? Getting my husband on board. I started decluttering 18 months ago. I did not go in full force but quietly and gradually. My husband was raised by 5th generation farming serial hoarders, who keep everything because it will come in handy. Each month I only got rid of 1 or 2 bags of things. At the start of this year, 12 months in, we got a call from surprise visitors who were arriving in 5 minutes. I did dishes, hubby vacuumed and our son, Mr20, straightened up the loungeroom. When hubby realised how easy it was to clean on such short notice, the penny dropped for him and he's on board.

Two things that have been so helpful that I have learned from your channel are 1. It doesn’t matter how full my closet is, I can only use the clothes that actually fit, (so I might as well clear out all the things that are cluttering it up and making it harder to find what I’m actually able to wear) 2. That most of the stuff in my house I can actually easily replace Goodwill, thrift stores, Walmart, Amazon. It takes a ton of the stress out of deciding because I know that it’s not the end of the world if I do throw something away that I actually need. I’ve declared about half of our things and so far we’ve been just fine 💕

The plateau is where I am with decluttering my sewing and art supplies. I’ve decluttered most of the rest of my house with your, and other KZfaq inspiration. I say that with gratitude. I decluttered about 50% of my remaining fabric stash (that has been purged several times). I’ve been donating art supplies, narrowing down to only watercolor and am faced with paring down those supplies. I probably have enough old worn out paint brushes and pads of paper to supply an army. The challenge is that I use these things, just not all of them. Facing the sorting is really feeling hard. My studio is in my bedroom, I just want to make it calm and minimal and functional…. And an inspiring place to work. Perhaps decluttering has become my new hobby. I feel like the process of getting to a peaceful place is not happening. ….Or perhaps I’m just not at that point. Obviously I need to keep some things in order to work. This last phase of sorting is a challenge. Your videos, even the older ones are so helpful. Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts.

I have a story to share about an item of my brother who passed away. I own a beautiful bed covering he had gotten in Korea but it sits in my closet. I have decided now to get rid of a bed spread I don't love in a guest room and use his in honor of him. this came at the perfect time for me because before it was painful to see it, but now I will see it and smile. I have grown used to the house again and all that is in it. I need to now push through the pain, reevaluate what I need and then donate the rest. Your statement about taking more than we need is greed hit home.

Actually pain is the reason why I am simplifying our house!!! I have chronic pain that is always there, and I know through research I have done that keeping all our stuff is not helping my pain management at all!! So having a simplified house will mean in the long run that my pain might reduce as my cortisol levels go down and I'm going to be looking after my adrenal glands. We live in the UK and have a 3 bedroomed house with an attic conversion AND separate storage units - please pray for our family of five as we go through this process xx

Dear Dawn, I can not express you enough how grateful I am for your blog! You are finding such right words, such a proper way to explain the "way out" of the mess and clutter. I´ve seen and read a lot about minimalism and decluttering and I am already seeing the light in the end of the tunnel. But this plateau can happen to anyone in any moment of this decluttering journey and then you stuck. Mine has happened to me now, when I was only in one overwhelming place away from the end... This video really helped. Those words of yours about how we probably don't care much about the things that are lying messy, not organized, forgotten and getting covered with dust - made it easier for to get rid of some piles and get to the next stage. Thank you so much. ❤

I hate when my kids fight because a sibling has picked up a toy that was across the room but they see it as theirs and don't want the others to use it, so why would I act the same way with the stuff I don't use in my house?
