The Fast and Furious franchise has given us car nerds a lot of enjoyment. These movies help shape the culture of the automotive world we live in, one quarter mile at a time. But on another hand, they also led us astray when it comes to the actual physics in some of their more famous scenes. “Busters” turbo hack, 100mph in reverse, doing a wheel stand WHILE doing a burnout? Today on Bumper2Bumper, we are gonna take a look at some of these feats of impossible physics and break out some engineering truth on some of our favorite Fast and Furious myths. Let go!

Not only is Dom doing a wheelie AND a burnout at the same time (props to you guys as I've never noticed that before), but he's also expertly controlling all of this without hitting his car on the ground or flipping over despite the absence of wheelie bars.
@andrewmiller1246

The reason they did that was because they had a hydraulic bar that would lift the front end of the charger so it could do a wheelie. They added smoke so viewers couldn't see the bar that lifted the front. If was nothing more than movie magic so the scene was more interesting

In regards to a car going fast in reverse, you could technically do it with a "standard" transmission -- only if your car had a CVT. A Dutch company called DAF made CVT cars in the 60s and 70s, which gave birth to an unusual competition called "Dutch reverse racing." DAF cars had no speed limiter in reverse gear, which meant the car's reverse top speed was the same as its forward top speed.

About the high-speed reverse: The real show-stopper to this is the steering geometry of a car. The steering is set up in a way to get a good directional stability and a righting / restoring moment. While driving forward... Driving reverse, this effect also reverses: The car does not want to drive straightforward by itself and if the wheels start to steer in one direction, they want to increase the steering angle.

Actually with regards to turboing a carbed engine, i know from the 22R in my Hilux that you just have to connect a boost line to the mechanical fuel pump, the fuel pump in the 22R is rated to around 15psi, but during use it never actually goes past around 6 or 7 psi, so you can easily add up to 6 or 7 psi of boost without changing anything other than adding a nipple to your fuel pump. The airflow will increase 1:1 with the fuel flow, its not a serious performance upgrade but it is a cheap way of getting some extra hrsprs out of a carbed engine provided it has a readily accessible fuel pump and that that fuel pump has a high enough pressure rating... Something similar can probably be done with that shitbox dom races in Cuba.

Meanwhile, in your videos you forgot to mention the supercharging effect of NOS by cooling the air going inside the air intake. That's in part what makes the mixture more efficient (cooler air = higher density). It's called chemical forced induction. BTW, the NOS won't ignite at explosion, but the bottle under high temperature (the car is on fire) can explode because of expansion of the gas contained inside. So the coloured flames might be kind of right actually ^^. (sorry if my english sucks)

That makes no sense - as long as you are not going to make too much power to break traction (like in 1st gear) you should get on Nos as soon as possible for the best acceleration (again, as long as you have traction, which you probably do in 2nd gear in a Jetta)

Yeah pretty much! What sux about the N2O though, is (especially with a decent size shot) keeping the bottle full! I only ran a 200hp plate on one of my cars like 15 yrs ago, and it lasts for quite literally a handful of passes down the strip before you have to top the bottle back off ($$$). Can be tricky too if you're trying to run "consistent" times, as the bottle pressure is always changing. You can, of course, use bottle heaters and stuff, but at that point, you've spent over a grand on you nitrous setup (which you still have to keep getting refilled). It's definitely not for the "budget racer" imho Turbocharge the engine and be done with it! :) ...and add nitrous to that later for extra fun. lol btw, nitrous works really well with turbos (a "50hp shot" will make around 100hp extra with forced induction, too)

Even if the tyres are going up in smoke, there's still some forward drive being produced. People apply the brakes for stationary burnouts, after all. I was going somewhere when I thought about Dom's charger. A minute later we pass by a storage facility, and there is a tow truck, on which IS LEGIT A 70's MUSCLE CAR (not exactly the charger but still really cool)

Carburetors work through the venturi principal. That is about using a fuel inlet into a chamber past an orifice to increase velocity while reducing pressure. A carburetor requires a fuel bowl open to the atmosphere to push fuel through the jets into the air intake plenum past the carburetor's venturi where flow was restricted to reduce pressure. A blow through carburetor has the bowl vent and the carburetor's air inlet connected together in the boosted air pressure inlet. All of this is restricted by the throttle blade that seals the plenum from the pressurized air above it. Once the throttle opens there will be a differential pressure between the pressurized air that is pushing on the fuel in the bowl versus the pressure drop past the carburetor's venturi. This action is what forces fuel into the intake manifold and how a blow through carburetor works. adjusting the jet size will cause the carburetor to be more rich or more lean depending on the amount of air flow through the venturi. So in that regard removing the vacuum line from the pop-off valve will simply allow full boost pressure when you don't want it, when off throttle while the engine is still spinning fast and or providing too much boost for the engine setup and or fuel choice causing damaging detonation. The purpose of the pop-off valve is to restrict boost pressure at high rpm when the throttle is closed. because at this time the engine is still spinning at a high RPM and a lot of exhaust flow is still going through the turbo. This is to prevent over boost off throttle. Given all this that boat engine in that pile of junk was already over heated. The pistons where already getting destroyed through expansion into the cylinder walls, melting and or fracturing due to detonation. But to top it all off the engine was on fire so it was loosing fuel pressure to the carb. The one thing that could be plausible in the high speed reverse situation is the use of separate reversing gear because the transmission only had forward gears. So in that situation you would have the same gears in forward as reverse.
