I am so glad you mentioned the “thinning” myth. The myth also goes the same for chemical exfoliators. Some professional beauty experts claim that BHAs and AHAs can thin your skin and make it age, but research actually states the opposite.
@katana5562
@katana5562 4 жыл бұрын
Valeria Vasileva Valeria Vasileva No, it is not a myth actually. You both are totally wrong on that. Why do you feel the need to generalize? I used 2% Salicylic Acid from PC, and my skin was totally destroyed after a few weeks by this product. My skin got literally paper thin, and additionally the blackheads underneath became very visible. My skin got hundreds of chess board like fine micro wrinkles all over my face. It took me several month to repair the damage somewhat. And yes, the product was recommended for my skin type and yes, I used it as recommended and used high SPF. ( BTW, I totally avoid the overprized products of PC since this experience, the main reason is she uses micro plastic in a lot of her products and also uses very low quality sun blockers in some products (breast cancer inducing hormonally active UV blockers). She does not care about the environment and the health of her customers. But that is just a side note.)

I consistently used betaine salicylate 4% (cosrx blackhead liquid power), and sometimes I used salicylic acid 2% (in form of powder mix with talc) too and my skin is getting better. You cannot say they are wrong as well cause I get different result against you.

@@katana5562 Some people just have a bad reaction to salicylic acid. I had a bad response too. Its not recommended as a leave on treatment for people with dry or sensitive skin because it can be way too harsh and stripping. Many also recommend starting at a very low concentration only a few times a week and working your way up to avoid bad reactions and sensitivity. BHAs do exfoliate the skin so they can make the skin subjectively look or feel thinner. But thats because you've removed a lot of built up dead skin that you're accustomed to seeing and feeling. It doesn't actually affect the living skin underneath. BHAs are also known to cause a lot of dryness in some people, which can enhance the look of fine lines and texture. But that's not the same thing as actually causing skin to age. Our skin is a flexible, permeable layer that is constantly gaining and losing moisture. If your skin gets dehydrated, you can always rehydrate it to make it appear plumper. Further, if your moisture barrier is compromised it can enable more "gunk" like bacteria, dead skin, and makeup to get into your pores and cause clogged pores or breakouts. Thats why some people actually don't see improvements when they use BHAs, and even experience the opposite effect.

@@katana5562 If your skin is going to get destroyed by acid, its going to be within a few days of using to 1 week. Not a few weeks after using. Your situation has so may factors surrounding it that could contribute to your result and you took that as absolute truth for you. Man.. you need more science in your life.
@katana5562

Kevin Ang Wrong. You are totally speculating. You do not know my individual skin, so don‘t behave like you did. All right? There was nothing else involved that could have caused the wrinkling and destruction of the skin. It started with using the product, and the process stopped where it was it reversed after stopping the product. It also reversed to the most part. This 100% proves it was the Paulas Choice product that temporarily ruined my skin. You my friend know literally nothing about skin and science, you just proved it with your remarkably ignorant comment!

Retinoids are an amazing big gun in dermatology for so many conditions but the history behind them is pretty awful, and not very often acknowledged... 'Acres of Skin' is a book that covers the topic, essentially lots of unethical testing on (mostly black) prisoners without appropriate consenting, and no real consequences ever came from it.

Yes! Some of the history of science is downright horrific - it's amazing how far society has come since then (but we also have so far to go, especially when people are still flippantly saying we should switching from animal testing to prisoner testing...)

A high school science teacher hit me with the “your skin will run out of cells if there’s too much turnover too young!” myth, and I believed it until I watched your video three days ago and suddenly was like, wait, no, she’s right. That really DOESN’T make sense for skin to work like that. I was already using it under my eye (I was desperate), so I just expanded to the whole face not really expecting much. It CAME for my congestion. I usually spend weeks recovering from my period skin (just in time to get it again, haha...ha), but the remaining whiteheads are nearly gone after two days. I’ve only ever used one other product that delivered these kinds of results, and I can’t really afford it. Basically what I’m trying to say is, this stuff is incredible and I’m subscribing. Thank you so much for spreading good skincare knowledge and correcting misinformation.

@@jazzyc1894 I think there's some truth to that one, because retinol can be irritating to some people, and for sure you don't want chemical burns under your eyes. I've never had any trouble, though. well according to Hayflick Limit as i remember the number of times cell divide and to grow and repair tissues is finite and limited total number of 52 ish. So if we start using retinol at a younger age like 20 or 30s the aging process will actually be enhanced because cells are unable to multiple indefinitely. well so they say, I dont know how accurate it is, but there are handful of cosmetic doctors like Mervyn Patterson who believes so.

Thank you for all of the great info! Just a reminder to everyone though, there are rare people out there do terrible with certain products, even if most people do well. I tried Differen Gel and it was the worst mistake of my life. It gave me severe, inflammatory, cystic acne that scarred (I had never had acne scars before this) and caused hair loss. I know that purging is common with retinol/retinoids but this was more than purging. I kept sticking with it though because I read how great it is and I really couldn't find any info about negative experiences with Differen/retinols. My dermatologist had me try azelaic acid instead and it has worked so well! I'm stilling dealing with the aftermath of Differen, like scarring, but the hair loss is gone and my skin is improving. Always listen to your body, even if it's a holy grail product/ingredient that's supposed to work amazing. You might just be one of the rare people that has issues with it 😛

For me personally it's all about cost. I've been successfully using over-the-counter retinol and adapalene which aren't that expensive on their own, but then I've also had to use hydrators and special moisturizers as well as niacinamide in order to keep my skin from being irritated and dry as a result of the retinoids. I need those products to protect the my skin barrier. The cost all of all of those products including sunscreen and cleansers adds up over time, and some of us want anti-aging on a tight budget. Especially now with a change in the economy. We want to know the the best bang for our buck when it comes to retinoids over the counter, tretinoin is very expensive in the US.

I use adapalene for acne, and it works better than anything else (though not perfectly alone - I also use salicylic and glycolic acids). I've thought of switching to tretinoin, because it has more evidence for anti aging affects (apparently? is that true). But because it's prescription and not photostable (or at least depending on the formulation, may not be) it just seems so much easier to stick with adapalene.

I really love your myth busting videos! Can you do a video talking about fragrance in skincare? I've heard so many conflicting things about it. My favoute moisturiser is so cheap but is quite fragranced, it doesn't cause me irritation but I keep hearing fragrance can cause damage further down the line. Eeek!!

Thank you Michelle for always explaining the studies and just giving great reliable advice! You're one of my favourite sources on anything about skincare, so thank you for making these videos for us chemistry noobs, lol. Question for part 2: can you please explain just how much more sensitive your skin becomes to the sun when using retinoids? After hearing again and again about the photosensitizing effects, I'm seriously starting to wonder if I might end up doing more damage than good, even with sunscreen every morning. Like, what happens if you don't apply sunscreen perfectly or just can't put on a thick layer every two hours in daily life? Should you just not use retinoids?
@LabMuffinBeautyScience
@LabMuffinBeautyScience 4 жыл бұрын
I think given that clinical trials on retinoids are conducted for months and there were no reports of increased photoaging in the subjects, and I've never seen a case report in the literature of increased photoaging while using tretinoin, it would be very very rare for someone to end up with worse sun damage while using retinoids as long as they take some sun protection measures.

I would recommend sunscreen before recommending retinoids - sun can make acne worse, and it's better to prevent UV-induced aging than to try to reverse it with retinoids! So if you use a retinoid without sunscreen, the sun will burn a lot of the results away...

For retinoid it is a disaster call :) You should use pea size for all of your face. Most of the brands warn about it and also it is a well known fact but if you've never used retinoid, it is natural to ask. Btw "Demost(h)enes" is a glorious name.

I posted this comment on your blog under the propylene glycol and the other glycol post. If possible you can even answer here if it's easier. I was searching more on those two ingredients and some of the blogs were saying that: " the formulation in the body lotion with propylene glycol helps to only hold the moisture in the body lotion and without actually adding moisture or moisturize the skin", and that the actual ingredient when it goes on the skin it draws water from deep in the skin to bring it to the top so over time the skin just looks good temporarily but is dehydrated inside. Could you talk more on these 2 points since I can't find much info on that. Thanks

Very informative and helpful! Thank you! Could you please touch on tretinoin strength’ effectiveness in photoaging. My sister recently got a prescribed Stieva cream 0.025 (for anti aging), i told her to go back to a doc and ask for 0.05. 0.025 seems low, but dermatologist in Korea does not prescribe 0.05% to a first time user vs. starting from 0.05 here in the US. It seems to me that Korean Dermatologists are too conservative. I would really appreciate if you can answer or cover it in your video.

I'm really concerned now about studies that show irreversible eye damage from retinol, including blindness. They say to not apply it near your eyes (which is mostly where you'd want to use it), but most people use retinol at night, so what happens if it migrates from elsewhere on your face to your eyes via your pillow?
