Hello Mary, Im an Oregonian who's originally born in Tx! I was raised by women whom didn't have as much skill and knowledge as you do in the kitchen. So naturally I was lost in the kitchen as well. I basically wanted to just thank you for helping me be a better father and cook. Our stores are filled with trash and your channel has helped me make sense of what to actually do in the kitchen. Real foods heal people. One last confession. Ive taken to calling you "Grandma" thru the phone. Lol! Something about you makes me feel like home. Thank you again. Bless you and your family. ☮🤙🏾

I just made my first loaf! My starter dough was 48 hours old. I did a sandwich bread in a loaf pan. Perfect crumb. Fantastic taste! It came out beautifully. In a couple of days I’ll do my second one. It makes the bread making process SO simple. In the interest of full disclosure I used my sourdough starter instead of commercial yeast. But let’s see if this works over time to produce ready dough every couple of days.

Mary, it worked. It took a few tries and several months. My last attempt, after adding the 3 cups to the 1/2 cup of dough, I added a yeast, the next batch I halved the yeast, and so on. the last addition of yeast was a pinch, and ever since then, it rises on its own. And after a couple of months of that not adding yeast to the 1/2 cup, it's starting to get that sour dough smell. Really cool. I let it sit in the fridge for the week and bake on Sundays. The one other thing I do that is not in your instructions, is I use my stand mixer, it's so much easier than the spoon handle. So thanks for this recipe - really cool and so simple.

This is wonderful! I've been thinking that people were making bread when they were going out west in wagons so they really didn't have the time or ability to do all that feeding, discarding etc. that is often recommended. From what I read they had a sourdough wooden bowl and even left over bit of bread went into it and became a part of the starter.

For consistent perfection every time (particularly for Pullman pan breads which bake unseen and unlike Dutch oven breads aren't so easy to test and put back if needs to bake longer even for experienced bakers ... for making the switch to high altitude baking if relocate/move and still dealing with plugged ears (or hard of hearing or deaf) ... and especially for new beginner bakers not yet comfortable with the thump/hollow sound method .... 190 F on food thermometer with tip inserted into center works for any type of bread loaf to ensure no longer raw/under-baked (no big deal if goes 10 to 15 or even 20 F degrees over) ... then do thump/hallow sound test to get used to and learn how it should sound so will know how to test without thermometer.

I just got the next loaf ready and it’s in a warm place to rise.🤣🤣🤣 This dough is more than forgiving. It really doesn’t matter how bad you mess up it WORKS. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! My 70 yr old mother loves it.

I can remember reading in my Little House on the Prairie books as a child, Ma Ingalls always making sure that they put all the left over bits of dough in the jar with the dough starter so they'd have more starter for bread. This would be logical given that they would not have had access to yeast regularly.

I'd been having problems making a great loaf of sourdough out of my stepsons sourdough starter (he's a CHEF) until I found YOU! I used one cup of his starter, then added 1 cup of sifted Einkorn flour, 2 cups of all purpose flour, the salt, sugar and water and put it in a 3 L jar in the fridge for 2 days. I wish I could show you the pic of the starter. It was amazing! Bubbles all over! I scooped out the dough, leaving some of course, and added about 1/2 cup sunflower seeds to the dough as I worked it into an oblong shape for my bread pan. Hubby like to make sandwiches so I used a 9.5 x 5.25 pan and it's perfect! It rose beautifully and so much that some of the pumpkin seeds I put on top, fell down the sides, lol. It's so delicious I don't think I'll ever mess around with just starter again! This is perfect dough for rolls and bread, but what should I add if I want to use it for pancakes, anything?

I have had zero success with making sourdough starter. I think I’ll try one more time. However I was at the grocery store the other day and in the yeast section I found a packet called instant sourdough and it says yeast and sourdough culture. They cost $.81 and I thought what the heck I’ll give that a try. I haven’t done it yet but that would be the easiest thing ever lol but I will try this other method. I was watching a lady and I can’t remember her name now, and she had a recipe similar to what you’re using there only it’s called master bread. It can stay in your refrigerator up to 14 days. It has 6 cups of flour to let you know the quantity. When you’re ready to bake bread you just pull out what you need and make it. I’ve used it a couple of times including cinnamon rolls and it turned out fantastic.

I made my first batch of dough on Sunday and baked a loaf in my bread machine on Tuesday afternoon. Tasted great and the texture was like English muffins. My bread machine is an Oster. I looked up the bake temperature: 266 degrees F. The top didn't brown but the sides and bottom looked fine. Can't wait to see how the next loaf comes out. I think I'll try adding whole grain flour slowly at each refresh. I saw on your website where it said to use at least 1 cup of bread or white flour. Thanks for the advice on that.

I am just now getting into sourdough bread making and fermenting foods. I guess I am late in the game. I homeschooled 7 children, but was always so overwhelmed with taking care of the kids, so I never tried any of this. It's never too late to get started, so I appreciate this video. I have a container in the fridge now. I can't wait to have a kitchen full of grandchildren learning the art of sourdough bread making. Thank you for the awesome video. FWIW- back in the day of raising babies, the internet just wasn't like it is today. lol. That explains a lot.

Mary, this video has been out a while, so I don't know if you're looking at comments anymore. I just put my first batch in the frig. I'm so grateful to you because I had just about given up on sourdough. Despite following all directions and different people's methods, my loaves were getting worse not better! I saw someone in the comments was going to put some of their refrigerated starter in instead of yeast. I've decided to start with the yeast but after that I'm going to add a tsp of my starter to the mix. I don't want to waste it and I don't think a tsp will contaminate it if the starter is not up to par. Anyway, so many of us want sourdough for health but even experienced cooks need new ideas. Thank you for all you do. 🥖

This recipe is great.i love having the dough all done and ready to bake. I havent been able to let sit more than 2 and half days, since 19th of july. I have even stayed up past midnight to bake a loaf. Ive been experimenting with the amounts of water and proofing times. 2 days ago i saw a recipe where they put acv in their bread.so i added it to dough. That is what i am cooking now. Equal yeast and acv. I have even doubled the yeast to see if still does well. All good. Great recipe.thank you so much. Mom and i are enjoying every bite. I do use organic bread flour in it, as that is what Mr. Steve uses in his breads.take care.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video, Mary. I have been struggling with sourdough starter. If my current batch doesn't turn out, I'll definitely be trying this one! I think the second loaf you made was lighter than the first one! I can imagine it will only get better with time. I am curious about how you would make cinnamon rolls with such a wet dough so please share that one when you try it. This is a really good idea for working women. Even if my sourdough turns out, I might use this method because when I get back to work, there won't be much time for babying starter. :)

Thank you Mary, I really enjoyed this video and want to try this method. I did try adding a cup of my not mature homemade starter to a regular loaf of bread made with a packet of dry yeast with very good results. The regular bread with dry yeast didn’t get near,y the rise this bread got with the addition of my starter. So this is right up my alley. Please keep experimenting on camera as I am very interested in this! I have the perfect containers to use that are bread rising buckets from King Arthur. Should I change back and forth to use a clean bucket each time? I know they can get pretty crusty and dirty. Thanks again.

Hi Mary, thank you for a great recipe again! I have my jar in the fridge since then and made rolls (pistolet in Belgium :) with the first batch, my partner did not like it but I did, 3 days later I made french baguettes with a cheese plate and he loved it. I made a pizza also and here is my question: how do you make a round pizza dough?? I ended up with squares but again my husband liked it. In the mean time it is bubbling away in the fridge and tomorrow it will become a normal bread ... I LOVE this, just take it out the fridge, let it rise and bake ... life saving ! :)

I'm on the 3rd day of my second attempt to make a sourdough starter, depending on how it turns out I may give this recipe/method a try. Thank you for sharing Mary.

Oh my goodness, I made my first loaf, and wow, how yummy, the flavor was sour, like sour dough, but not like an established sour dough, but non the less, a great tasting bread, this receipe Mary is a really great one, I imagine, each loaf will be better and better, as it ages, thankyou, so much for another awsome receipe. I can't wait to c what u come up with next.😋😊

You will love it I just baked with a stone and baking bowl preheated to 500; after 10 minutes I go to 4:50 and also spray the crust with water! It really comes out very crispy and very thick!
