there havent been any found - but recently a tunnel entrance has come to light at the side of the blast furnace , perhaps for loading the pig iron from that level into the largest of the shafts . perhaps steps will be found . it does seem odd that there was no way down from the surface - other than being lowered by rope

@@neonpike I have so many books on Butterley but there is very little about the canal tunnel and the "wide hole". I have seen the tunnel vents are still visible along the Coach Road, are they blocked off? Great model by the way.

@@rockfan3299 no if you get above , theres still water visible at the bottom . the first is behind butterley reservoir on a piece of flat land which used to be butterley sidings and warehouses , it has a flat grill and a handy viewing platform of bricks and rubble . the next is next to the coach road ( opposite side to the police Hq playing fields . this one is quite tall . i once saw a bunch of kids on top - one of them kindly took a photo down the shaft using my camera - and they didnt drop it down or anything ! water , and a lot of tree branches were in the water . theres a concrete piil box type structure next in line - nobody seems to know what this was . i suspect it could have something to do with repairs to the canal . the last vent towards golden valley is on private farm land so i know nothing about that one
