Fantastic analysis as always. This was arranged by Layne, their beat boxer btw. I would like to double down on hearing your take of hoist the colours. That was a Geoff arrangement. I've probably listened to it 100 times and am still blown away by the arrangement and performance every time. Their Halo cover is also amazing.

@@mastermonster195able He hits a B0 subharmonic on the Halo theme and that's his lowest note yet according to himself. That B0 to his high at A5 is right at the five octave mark.

@Nate Baker, Geoff's voice is platinum. He should get an award for his pipes and the work he's done to hone his incredible voice. Having said that, Layne does much better (mind you... not just better but much better) arrangements than Geoff. Geoff's arrangements are wildly dynamic... which isn't that dynamic at all. It isnt too difficult to write wild stuff into an arrangement and if it's well executed, it can even sound okay. Geoffs arrangements have one voice finishing the line a different voice started, he's constantly changing up the beat and even the tempo and overall, as a completed work, it sounds like a piece of modern art looks. Blotchy, splattered and generally nonsense. Laynes arrangements may not be as "edgy" - because edgy isn't the point, beautiful music is the point and he's a lot better at producing beautiful music (with plenty of edge) then Geoff is.

He actually displays more of his range here, both at the high and also the low end. Admittedly, the thing he does in the Ursula song is a slide, so that's impressive in its own way.

He went from a B4 to an E1 at the end. This was three octaves plus a 5th above. This was beyond epic.

I have watched at least 4 other reaction videos by very qualified voice coaches/music teachers/etc., and I have to say your analysis is by far the most comprehensive and detailed. I too get carried away by Geoff's low register performance but you rightly point out to us a lot of what else is going on in this performance that altogether make it quite impressive. What a wonderful breakdown! I love your analyses, and this is such a fun song to pick apart. Geoff is infamous for that B4-E1 descent at the end (it still blows my mind that he can do- and has done- this live). I agree; this is a spectacular arrangement (care of Layne Stein, the vocal percussionist; he's a madman!) But what I- and many others- believe to be VoicePlay's best arrangement to date is Hoist the Colours, from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It would be amazing if you could break down that song- it's a piece that has literally broken reactors all over KZfaq, some of them just shaking their heads in disbelief and walking off camera without a word. It is so engaging and creative; I truly think you'd love it.

I always love your reaction to Voiceplay and Mr. Castellucci! Layne, the beatboxer did this arrangement. Geoff says Layne likes to see how far he can stretch Geoff's voice. Please, please, please do Hoist the Colours next. Geoff arranged it and it is astounding! You will not be disappointed, promise!

The singers are Geoff, Layne - beatbox, J.None, Eli (in red) and Earl (the nasal quality). Layne did the arrangement.

Earl was the one that sang that 'You haven't got a prayer' line. Him, Eli (ellie) and J.None are the 3 children: Lock, Shock and Barrel from the movie. The beatboxer, Layne, is Zero, the ghost dog. Loved your analysis - keep 'em coming! :)

Earl was the tenor 1 for the group before he left for private reasons. They have not replaced him, we still miss him and despite the many people who have featured with them none of them have quite fit that void.

As far as a cappella groups in general, VoicePlay is fantastic and any of their songs are worth a listen. As far as Home Free goes, I'm not a fan of country at all, but they still have some really good songs like the Sea Shanty Medley. My favorite Petnatonix song is actually Aha (Imogen Heap cover).

"Mr Castelucci you're an alien" I had to laugh because I've had friends I've shown this video to say,things like "How'd he go so high, then so low?, He's obviously not human". The not human part is the consistent theme in the remarks I get.

I really enjoy your breakdowns. As a former 2nd violin & violist (symphony, chamber, pit, & small ensemble), I love how you quickly pick up details that are often missed (the spectacular arrangement, that descending bass riff, the syncopated background harmonies, etc...). As a string player, I personally love their vocal string pizzicato arpeggio accompaniment portion of this as well, and I agree, they should have awards for Voiceplay's stuff - arrangements, performances, costumes/makeup, videography, all of it. Speaking of, I enthusiastically add my voice to the chorus to urge you to do reactions to Hoist the Colors and the Halo Theme. Two more outstanding videos - intricate harmonic ear candy with lots of cherries on top. You will enjoy them, I have no doubt whatsoever. Your makeup and thick braid is too cute (perfect extension from Devil's Night to Samhain to Dia de los Muertos). New sub, btw. I enjoy your quick pickup of musical detail, ear for harmonic intricacy, and enthusiastic musical geekery; you are lively fun to watch. Thank you. 😊

His cover of Blackbird gives a good sample of his range at that time.. Since then he's got down to a B0 at least. He is always working on his voice. Pretty sure that it's "if you aren't shaking, there's something very wrong." The subtitles got it wrong. It's Earl Elkins Jnr who sing that line you mentioned. Sadly he has now left the group.

It's "shaking", yes. Although in this particular context, "shaken" works just about as well, so the difference may not be important.

Best analysis of this song that I have seen. Love your insights. Only a tiny group of people that I have found on the internet with your kind of knowledge and skill in conveying it clearly to an audience. I am exploring acapella groups and I truly believe Voice Play and Home Free are exceptional artists in every way. It’s terrible that there isn’t a category for them in award shows because they are producing some of the most beautiful and exciting things out there today. So happy I can enjoy them all!

This song was my introduction to VoicePlay. It took a side trip into KZfaq to see the scene in the movie, and then I had to retrace my steps three more times as VoicePlay covered three other songs from N.B.C. truly inspired work and conceptualization on VoicePlays part , and now I'm well and truly hooked... and Loving it.

Geoff Has his own YouTub channel also. If you wants to hear some of his voice changes and range, he did a cover of “Sixteen Tons”. It’s a folk/country song about Coal Miners and the bind they got into due to the mine owners paying them in credits that could be used in the grocery store and clothing store and hardware store that would be set up in the town that would grow up around the mine. It kept them always in debt. Geoff has 4 different parts that he does and “sits” beside himself while he does all the parts. Really awesome.

Everyone is going to say it, but their version of Hoist The Colors is truly one of their best ever arrangements. You will be introduced to their newest member Cesar De La Rosa, who replaced J None, and it features Jose Rosario Jr. It’s blown away so many other reactors. Also highly recommend their Halo Theme, where Geoff hits his lowest ever recorded note, a B0! That is also a fantastic arrangement and has a special dedication at the end.

Dear Jess... Yes, this song is fantastic. I already knew that. My comment is about your reaction. WOW. Here’s my analogy: I’m in the old west. I’m a gunslinger. I am REALLY cocky about being the fastest draw in the west. I brag. I boast. Then one day I face off against an unknown bad guy, and I am shot through the heart before my gun even clears the holster. Okay, back to the present…I think I have a really good ear for music. Classical, jazz, rock, barbershop (I know), a cappella… a REALLY good ear. After listening to your reaction, I know that compared to YOU, my ear wouldn’t even clear the holster. Simply a superb reaction! Bravo!!

This song is my favorite by them. So glad you reviewed it because you catch the nuances to things they do that most don't. One of the things I enjoy the most in the song is the range by the group on the last note. Geoff hits that incredibly low note, but it is balanced by Earl (the tenor) who hits an extremely high note. Gives me chills all the time.

yes the arrangement was by Layne Stein the beat boxer and he was even the director he is a very talented guy he arranged many other songs of them and for sure he studied music somehow, I 've seen him playing violin in one of their videos. Stay safe

One of the most amazing vocal groups I've had the pleasure of hearing live is "The Real Group". Unfortunately most of the original members have now retired and the replacements, while good, aren't as good in my opinion. But their older stuff, like their Count Basie medley, is absolutely fantastic. Another on I'd recommend is the alto and soprano of the group doing a J. S. Bach invention in Am where the alto sings the left hand keys and the soprano sings the right hand keys. Of their newer stuff, I'd recommend the tribute they did to the SweDanes.

I think I have seen just about reaction out there on this and yours is top notch. I was afraid that you would be too technical, but no - like in Goldilocks, it was just right. Although I don't have any musical training (I flunked clarinet), I have learned so much from reactions. I really appreciate you rewinding to cover your points. And I love seeing those of you with musical chops enjoying this as much as I do. (As much I love Geoff's low notes, I so appreciate the high register and those runs. My favorite parts are the "gambling man" lines and those awesome belts ("I'm the Oogie Boogie man"). Good to know I am not the only one!

I truly admire your ability to pick out all of the subtle nuances in your analyses that I completely miss. It makes re-listening to the songs that much more enjoyable. Please consider doing an analysis of Home Free's cover of Helplessly Hoping. It is nowhere near as complex as this song, but I think you will find it a beautiful arrangement to unravel.

One with the line - prayer is Earl. He left the group for few years ago. It seems that Earl is back. Geoff has 4 to 5 Octaves with low notes in subharmonics such as last note is an E1.

If you love this arrangement, you really need to analyze VoicePlay's versions of "Hoist the Colors" and "Halo". You will love those as well. And YES!!! They do deserve awards for their work!

Yes! At last, someone who appreciates Geoff’s resonance through his entire range. Layne, who did the arrangement, always pushes Geoff to do more than he thinks he can, but Layne is right that he can handle it. I urge you to listen to Hoist the Colours, a recent release. Geoff arranged it and did a spectacular job in bringing out everyone’s best. He also builds to an exciting climax that has left many reactors speechless. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that one!

Geoff shines so bright here that it almost diminishes the others' performances, still cant help but love it anyway, on their previous performance of "This Is Halloween" everybody got to shine, so it's kinda balanced out.
