THANK YOU for mentioning the 28-200 Tamron. Literally the best value lens IMO. It is so good for the money. I needed a long lens to take to Africa on a trip, picked this one up, and it is now my go-to lens for anything run and gun. Wide and fast when you need it. And 5.6 aperture at 200mm is not bad at all. And with great ISO performance with dual gain cameras these days, you can just set to F5.6 and then the aperture sticks through the range if that is a hang up for you. The versatility is through the roof with this lens. If you are walking into a situation where you can't plan, take your time, and control all your shots (public events, travel, docu work) and need range, this lens has what it takes to get you the shot. You can ALWAYS get the shot. It might not be the best the shot could be if you used a different lens, but you don't miss the shot because you need to change lenses. Or didn't have the money to get the "best" lens.

I second that opinion plus will mention that it has good close focusing ability so really is a great lens to have and has totally replaced my Tamron 28-75 in my camera bag as it weighs about the same. Hard to tell them apart side by side. I am happy with that lens purchase especially for travelling.

This summer, I bought it and imo, 28mm is wide enough for some photos. When travelling I visit a lot of churches and sometimes I'd have to use my phone's 0.5x camera to take wide photos. But I think when paired with an ultra wide zoom, it would be amazing.

Really good video! Probably one of the most informative video about lenses. You covered when/why/how, especially the practical how part, which is straight to the point and not like many other channels. One thing to mention is that you can do great work with almost any lens. I just watched a full video about massive ski jumps where the whole video is of very poor quality image wise, the snow is blown out and the sky is over saturated, you can't actually see the detail of what you want to see, but hey, they are in a Red Bull event doing massive stuff. The whole video is probably made from a GoPro so what does that matter??? It's always the content and the story that makes a great video. Just like if you produced this video in poor image quality, like in a quick podcast style phone video, I'd still say the same praise, because your information is great. So just go for that one which you can comfortably afford. That's my reaction of the last parts.

Great video, I can vouch for the 16-35 f4 and the 70-200 f4 for sure. The 50mm 1.8 is always on offer on Amazon and for the money it’s great. I almost moved to the 55 but gonna wait and just go with the 50mm GM(eventually). My next lens….a 135mm. I just love compression in a shot, for me it’s one of those things that really do distinguish’proper’ photos from the amazing stuff you can do on smart phones. Can’t fake that compression no sir.

My choices slightly different… Samyang 24mm 1.8, Samyang 45mm 1.8 and Tamron 35-150 (although not cheap - if you replace 24 to 70 and 70 to 200, it’s great value - and has all the features you mention at the end)

This video makes me happy that most of my cameras have EF mount or can be adapted to work well with EF lenses. Tamron is my favourite lens manufacturer at the moment. The picked up a brand new G2 150mm to 600mm for $1,000 (on sale). Fast aperture is always nice, but I don't really have an actual need for it on a big telephoto. I have one of their g2 70 -300mm and am going to pick up a 15mm-30mm. I can't say for sure how they work with other camera systems, but I almost can't believe the performance of those lenses, for the prices.

Just a tip for any beginners like me: APS-C sensor cameras need a 35mm lens to get the same look/FOV as a 50mm on a full frame camera. The calculation, for Nikon at least, is x1.5 35x1.5=52.5, very close to a "Nifty Fifty".

Thank for the video 💪 It could be really useful for people building their system. It is easy to spend money for the G Masters and do NOT have expected results. Quite often it is much better to spend the reasonable amount of money and just use the gear - after some time, if you really now what you need/like you can invest into G Master for the one specific use case you are 110% sure about. You have mentioned 24mm GM and 50 GM which sounds like a good options for videography and vlogs. If you are focusing more on photography and looking for the best bang for your bucks I would highly recommend the two lenses from Sony: 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 💣 Somehow these lenses are not G graded, but they offer weather sealing, focus hold button (I do not like that name) and AF/MF switch. The AF is fast and precise. Some of the cons compared to GM lenses are: only 1.8 vs 1.4 in GM, lack of aperture ring, more CA. Still amazing value ...

Awesome video Chris as always! Big fan of the channel! Definitely helps to pick the right lenses... I just might be the dummy one, but I sold my Tamron 70-180 f2.8 and my Sigma Art 85 f1.4 to get the Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM ii 🤷‍♂ the main reason is because sometimes the 180mm is not enough in nature and I can get a teleconverter for the Sony I can't for the Tamron also I barely reached for the 85 prime for portraits I always used my Sony Gm 35 f1.4 or my Tamron 70-180 f2.8 before, now it's time for the Sony 70-200 GM ii to take over and do everything from portraits, sport, travel, wildlife (w/ 2x teleconverter) street and landscape photography!

First of all my congratulation on you 400th KZfaq video! My ultimate best lens set will be: Sony 14mm F1.8 GM (or as an option Sony 12-24 2.8 GM, only if you have a boy to carry your lens lol) + Sony 35mm F1.8 + Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 + Tamron 150-500 F5-6.7. If we go for "budget" then: Tamron 17-28 2.8 + still Sony 35mm F1.8 + Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 G2 + Tamron 70-300 F4.5-6.3 or maybe even coming new Tamron 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 (instead of both 28-75 and 70-300). If we go for budget then just Tamron 28-200 F2.8-5.6 + Helios 44-2 58mm F2.

Chris, I'm looking for a wide-angle lens for my Sony A7C that I will use to record workout videos at my small private gym and in a commercial gym. The two main things I need are a lens that will allow my tripod to be close to me while still capturing my entire body (when required) and blur the people in the background when I'm in the public gym. Lastly, I do love the idea of saving money. Therefore, I'm not looking to break the bank. I will shoot vertical (IG Reels) and horizontal for KZfaq if that makes a difference in the selection. Thank you in advance for your input.

This info is already a bit outdated. The new Sigma 24/1.4 DG DN ART is probably the best alternative to the 24mm GM, and when talking about 70-200 the new GM II definitely deserves being mentioned. The tamron 17-28/2.8 is about to be replaced with a G2 version. And in my opinion, the sony 50/1.8 is really terrible. :D

My biggest thing with prime lenses is just going for the F1.8 primes instead of the F1.4s and generally going used. 35mm F1.8 is an amazing option as is the 50mm F1.8. I did do the 55mm F1.8, but that was bought during the early days where the standard 50mm F1.8s autofocus was rubbish on the older bodies. The Sigma 24-70 F2.8 is a good lens - but it does zoom the wrong way which is very annoying.... I might have gone with the Tamron if I had known. I do like the sound of the Tamron 28-200.... if my Sony 24-240 ever dies (and it's been through a lot)... I think I will get that.
@therealmarcel
@therealmarcel 11 ай бұрын
May I ask why you prefer 1.8 to 1.4?
@MeAMuse
@MeAMuse 11 ай бұрын
@@therealmarcel a bunch of reasons really… firstly most people (even photographers) can’t tell whether you are at 1.8 or 1.4 unless they are seeing them side by side, and realistically most non photographers can’t tell at all. After that, you have lighter in weight, and definitely much cheaper (but that is not core to my decision - I have plenty of money and could easily go out and replace all my 1.8s with 1.4s tomorrow with no worries… I just don’t feel the need). Lastly most the time you want to have a wider DOF anyways - especially if there are more people in the frame. Choose what is good for you my friend! There are plenty of people that will choose different to me… but I definitely think there are a lot of people that think they need the 1.4 is going to be somehow make them a pro. I can take pictures with whatever gear I have and get great results. Friends who have got married have chosen to use my photos taken with an RX100 VI over the Pro Photographer primes on. If I made my living based on photography- I might buy F1.4s… but as non-pro… I don’t need to chase that extra 5% in performance that most people don’t notice and I can stay lighter and more nimble.. Hope this helps? Happy to answer more questions if you have them.

Great video. What do you think of the Tamron 35-150 vs sony 70-200 for weddings? I like the versatility of the 35-150, but the extra reach on the 200 is good to have. I have a 24,50,90 for my primes. Mid range zooms don’t interest me much. I find I can get great shots with my 50. I like the OSS on the 70-200 if I need to go handheld for other projects as well. I probably in the minority but long lenses are just more visually interesting to me.

Best all in one is obviously the 24-105 f4, best video lens for Sony before going to cine glass, incredibly sharp for stills, and has stabilization. This is a complete no brainer answer.

Great video! Agree with another commenter, the pacing was great, content was actually useful (not just a low effort tier list) and I think you covered all bases. Been thinking about a 24mm prime for a while! Between 16-35 PZ and 24-70 GM have been using 24mm a lot. Seems especially interesting for video to be honest!

0:12 What's the first lens you buy? No, it's not a 24/1.4 prime. The first lens you buy is a general zoom that encompasses the normal range. Think a 24-70mm or 24-105 lens.

i got 5 Lenses for my camera, 3 of which are 3rd party, and i love all of them. The 2 first party lenses are my standard and tele zoom, but all my 3 primes are off brand - saved me enough money to get a 2nd body.

In a world of Mirrorless cameras, that easily lend themselves to be used with a converter you can use dSLR glass. And a lot of photographers scrambling to get new lenses, pro grade lenes are up for graps for the rest of us. I jusst saw a Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 IS USM for sale for 500$ here in Norway. I.e of you could not afford pro level glass before (like me) , now is the time!

You have forgotten the classic 20mm G. I would rather buy that instead of 24mm, with active stab crop on new Sony it kind become closer to 24mm. Plus with Sony a7iv it would be either 20mm or 30mm defends on the resolution plus the clear image zoom :)

Sony 10-18 apsc is also a good cheap wide angle. with active steady shot you can set it to 12mm on FF cameras and you essentially have a 12-18mm with OSS and minimal distortion. Sharpness is okay.

I have a Sony A7II (EMount) and I’ve recently started shooting sports. Mostly American Football, but I need a better lens, as my current isn’t the best at shooting across the field. What lens would you recommend for me? There’s so many options, what would you, or any commenters recommend? Budget is about mid-range, can’t afford anything super expensive like 2-3k. If anyone could help, thanks!!
