Many people ask me which lenses are the best budget lenses for the Sony A7III and A7s III so in this videos I will walk you through each lens I use on my sony alpha cameras every day. The best lens is the one you use a lot and while there are a lot of great options out there I also lean toward the best lens for your budget. Many of the Tamron lenses out there for Sony A7III and A7sIII are not as expensive as other options but their performance is excellent so I highly recommend them, but there are a few lenses from Sony that I think deserve a look as well. If you own and A7III, A7s III, A7rIII or A7rIV and you want to know what are some great lenses for your camera this video is for you.

You are the perfect example of making the best use out of the gear you own. There are so many people doing only tech reviews in their studio and maybe - if they are brave - in their backyard, but you use your gear in the field and in tough conditions. Therefore I trust your opinions!

Really great advice, couldn't agree more. I just order that trinity of lenses and now I have my eye on that 85mm. What I love about all the lenses you mention in the video is that they share the same 67mm filter size, so one set of filters works across the whole collection.
@JakeSloan

fantastic and I agree 100% about the filter size. I have a couple lenses that are a different size and it's really a pain to have to carry filters for just those lenses

Nice video, very fair recommendations. I rock the 85mm 1.8 and 24mm 1.4 GM and I couldn't be happier, covers like 99% of things that I shoot. To be honest I use the 85mm for street photography as well, not just portraits. And 24mm takes over for any kind of landscapes, well most of the time at least. It's always fun to mix them

Thank you for the great suggestions and as a person who at the edge of switching to Sony system, I think I will definitely starting with the trinity set and 85mm 1.8/f or 55mm 1.8/f. 28~200mm is tempting when doing outdoor events though.

Great review! I initially purchased a Sony a6000 (aps-c) with two kit lenses. I got it home and was not feeling great about the purchase. Two days later I returned it and bought an a6400 with a Tamaron 17-70mm 2.8mm lens. I am so glad I did. This combo is incredible and covers such a wide range of focal lengths, it's all I needed for many months. I recently bought a Sony 70-350. I like it but don't love it. I was considering the Sigma 100-400 and am now wondering if I would have been happier with that. Lastly, I just bought a Samyang 12mm 1.8 and man, this takes wild & WIDE pics!

I actually bought the A7iii with the Tamron 28-75, Sony 85 1.8 and Sony 35 1.8 in January and later got the 70-180 because I wanted to get closer and use the macro capabilities of that one. Man I was getting the 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180 but the 50 or 55 primes would be a good sub for that middle range. I shoot 40% of my photos at 70, 10% at 24 and 50% in between usually around 50..

Great video as always Jake! I love the 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180. Like you I shot with just the 28-75 for my first year with my A7III. Although I haven’t used used my 28-75 much sine picking up and he other two. Been rethinking my lens since I need to add a longer telephoto for the types of photography I’ve been doing of late. My struggle is I do both video and stills and travel a lot (in Puerto Rico currently) so I struggle to keep my kit small since I’ve added a mini2 drone as well. It keeps growing! Been considering the 70-300 in lieu of the fantastic 70-180, or perhaps getting into a 400+ mm. Need to watch more reviews.

I have the 70-300 and 17-28 both are great. Mainly i decide if i di video or photo close up i use the 17-28 and with aps-c i cover the 35mm up to 63 with clear zoom at f/2.8.. for wildlife, zoo, and portrait, and wildlife video i use the 70-300mm with can go up to 450mm with aps-c and up to 900mm with clearzoom. Having a 28-200 for time where changing the lens is difficult would be a good compromise.

I think you've nailed the question "best lens selection on a budget" for E-mount FF. I own the 3 Tamrons and they are superb lenses. And when you check the price you can't believe it's true. Of course, there's always one or two issues you would prefer like this or like that. But overall and considering the competition when you look to the ratio price-performance-quality no other lens selection beats this Tamron trio.

Hi Jake. Great video. Very informative and I like that you have tested them in harsh conditions. I do a lot of hiking to take photos and like that tamron lenses are lighter as this would mean less weight on my walks. I have been looking for ages to work out what to get on a budget for mostly landscape/astro and wildlife with a little portrait photography as well. I have been using the a6300 but I’m looking to get the a7rii. Would you still recommend using the tamron lenses with the higher megapixel a7r ii?

Just got the last of the holy Tamron trinity this week. Started with the 28-75, quickly added the 17-28, and finally just added the 70-180. I've got a couple Sigmas (35mm and 50mm) if I really need to drop below f2.8, but 99% of the time the Tamrons are giving me what I need. After being a prime purist for so long I have no regrets about getting zooms.

Thanks Jake for such informative videos. Could you help with deciding which one lens for my purpose? I love to take family/event shots and am continually disappointed with these - they are usually in low light situations. I also love seascape/view photography and then the real close-up nature pics like petals, insects etc. Am I asking too much to try covering all these interests with one lens? 😜. I will be purchasing the Sony A7III in the coming days.

Hi Jake, great video and great advice. I wonder, I have the peak design tripod and wonder what set up you have that seems to support the long lens tamron 70-180 since lens has no tripod ring?

Great reviews and suggestions! 👍 I have the new A7 IV and two ZV-E10's. I am switching off of Canon DSLR's after years and have a number of "L" lenses that I'm now working on replacements for to use with my new Sony's. I am temporarily using both the Sony MC-11 and Metabones V Adapters for the Canon, s, but I'm looking to convert to E mount lenses only. Some of your suggestions have given me well-needed reviews, evaluations and ideas! I bought the Sigma 24-70 DG DN ART after a lot of back and forth with the Tammy, but I did buy the 17-28 Tammy. The 70-180 might be a good choice to replace my 70-200 f/2.8 L Canon. For large tele, I bought the Sigma 150-600 DG DN Sport (the new one), and for the ZV's, I have APS-C's incuding the Sig 16mm 1.4, Sony 20mm Pancake, and Sony 18-105 f/4.0. I was forced to buy the 16-50 kit lens with one of the ZV's due to only finding one E-10 body-only and then having to buy the kit for the other due to almost non-existent availability of the model. My takeaway from your video is a strong interest in a couple of lenses you reviewed, especially the Sony 24mm f/1.4 due to my needs for my live streaming studio setup as well as low-light photography. Additionally, you have seriously perked my interest in the Sony 85mm f/1.8, Tammy 70-180, and possibly even the inexpensive Tammy 28-200. Awesome reviews and discussion. Nailed my questions without even having been asked!! 😁👍 Cheers!

The Sony FE 24mm - 104mm F4 OSS G is a great general zoom lens, and reasonably priced at $1100. It has bit more range than the Tamron 28-75 but not quite as fast. With OSS it does very well in low light, but probably without the F2.8 probably won't generate as much bokeh blur at similar focal lengths. Another important aspect is weight, the G Masters are all metal w/ large apertures that end up weighing a ton. Even if they didn't cost more, they may not be worth it.

Finally somebody other than myself that believes in Tamron. They make really good lenses that are very affordable the only lenses to stay away from in the Tamron lineup are the 2.8 prime lenses the 35mm definitely left something to be desired. If you are an event photographer you will definitely love the 28-200 the specs don't do it justice it is by far one of the best lenses in my lineup. At some point I'm getting the 17-28.

Thank you for an excellent informative video. I will wait until Sony A7 IV is in the store to try it prior to make a purchase. Is there any way to have an external GPS connect to Sony A7 IV?
