If you do have a Canadian private helicopter license, good luck finding a flight school that will rent you time in one. I was told the insurance companies wouldn’t allow it. Therefore I ended up buying a Bell 47 in the US when I was 56, and the seller taught me how to fly it for the price of gas. It was an add-on to my fixed wing ATPL. I believe the minimum back in 2007 was 30 hours for the add-on. I took my flight test in the US, and when I came back to Canada, they accepted the US license but required me to to take the P-Star exam before issuing the Canadian Private helicopter. If you don’t need hull insurance (perhaps you paid cash so no bank involved), all that is required by Transport Canada is liability insurance, which can be obtained fairly inexpensively. The other factor is to buy right....don’t buy a machine which has little time left on it’s time limited components. Get a machine with lots of time left before overhaul or replacement. I’ve been living the dream for 13 years now and have never regretted it. It was something I had wanted to do since I was 5 years old. Great videos Mischa! Keep them coming.

I'm 62 years old, live in Southeast Texas and started training for my Rotorcraft PPL in 2017, wanting to eventually get to my Commercial, then CFI for whatever came later in my life with regards to flying. Luckily I have the disposable income to do it - not wealthy, but with a good income and a simple lifestyle. My instructor managed the little muni airport where I was training and coincidentally owned a new Cabri G2, which is what I started training with. When I had about 22 hours, he lost his contract to manage the airport and had to sell the G2. I was devastated. Now, i was stuck without an aircraft to train in, with the closest option being Dallas, over 300 miles away. I had always planned to buy a small, used heli to continue flying after my private, but now I moved that plan into high-gear. After a some months, I found a Part 135 operator in the Northeast who was closing the flight-school part of their operation and was liquidating a small, relatively late-model fleet of Schweizer 300 CBs. After some serious negotiating...I snagged the LAST ONE!. It was a 2001 model and since they had their own in-house A&Ps, it was in cherry condition. Had it trucked down to Texas and have been flying with my instructor most weeks to finish my training. We made a deal that he would continue training me and in exchange I would rent him the 300 for a really good rate so he could continue CFI and commercial work as it comes. Got him on my insurance, which I cover as part of the deal and it's working out really well. He gets access to the aircraft, I get an aircraft and training. A side benefit is that we have the only Schweizer in the area, so it's somewhat of a novelty. I love that little heli and I'm getting really proficient in it. Have neglected my ground school because of home repairs due to flooding last year, but I'm back on track and will have my PPL before the summer's out. If you can swing it and you love helis, like I do, I can tell you it is wonderfully rewarding. DO IT!

I got my PPL(h) at 63 training on a JetRanger, couldn’t afford a turbine a/c and thanks to you bought a Cabri G2 which I love. Im 66 now and have 360 hrs up. Come to Tasmania and I will show you what a beautiful place it is ( after Covid of course)

In the United States, private pilots must complete a biannual flight review with an examiner or certified flight instructor. So every 2 years you get checked to see if you still can fly safely.

Saw a Cabri at Oshkosh a few years ago and fell in love. I couldn't stop thinking about it. I am a 69 year old instrument rated private pilot in the US but wanted the challenge of learning helicopters. Flew 1.5 hours each way in my plane to take lessons in an R-22, and drew two conclusions: (1) Hovering is much harder than I could have imagined! and (2) I still love this! Got tired of paying so much and flying so far to get lessons and decided to buy a Cabri. I didn't realize that there would be a one year wait for delivery, but fortunately was offered a 500 hour used Cabri located in France. It still took 6 months (and ungodly shipping costs) to get it here and get it reassembled, but I am happy to report that it finally arrived and I recently soloed in it. The difference between a Cabri and a Robinson R-22 is like the difference between a 1969 Volkswagen and a new Tesla, IMHO. Everyone at the airports wants to come over and talk about it with me, and I am happy to be an unofficial spokesman. Your videos helped me to finalize my decision on the Cabri, and I thank you for that.

Just wanted to say thank you for taking me places I will never be able to do myself. I'm 64 and bought my self a drone, and have become very intrigued with helicopters, never been in one. I am so enjoying your videos! It would be an incredible dream come true to actually pilot one! 58 years young i'm in Virginia, been flying my own 172 got fixed wing license for 50th birthday just sold it and got a 1963 Hughes 269A invested around 70k. i fly just for fun always wanted to fly helicopters after 8 years in army as crew chief on uh60 Black hawks around 2500 hours in the back time to rid up front!

Hey there Mischa. At 52 with 31 years of airline flying behind me, my wife surprised me with a couple of lessons in an R22. Absolutely loved the experience although the Robinson cyclic control did my head in. I’ve been wracking my brain on how to go about setting up a G2 syndicate. It’s clearly the right learning tool although the R44 is currently the only decent 4 seater at the right price. I’m not worried about the age factor. For me affordability is the issue (along with the quality of training school of course). I have no business experience so coming up with a creative way to make this dream a reality is the issue. COVID hasn’t helped! Keep up the great work. Looking forward to visiting one day soon (all the best skiing is in Canada!). Cheers.

I'm 85 and still flying a BushCat with a lot of hours in a 310, My bucket list called for flying a Hiller UH-12 C. I am training in a RotorWay EXEC 162 as I fly on a basic-med listens. I have completely restored my Hiller with and current annual. I will fly my Hiller before my bucket gets to rusty. Hi Mischa, thanks for taking the time to put together and post some very informative videos. I am a fellow Canadian. Got my PPL (fixed wing) way back in 1976. Flew for many years while trying to balance growing a family and growing a business. The flying hours trickled down over the years and eventually stopped. Fast forward to my 60th birthday when I came to the mortal realization that I better start checking off items in my bucket list before I run out of life. Got my PPL(H) by the fall of the same year. After much research and scouring the globe, I became the very happy owner of a R44 Raven II. I am now 66 (years old, not Robinson 66) with just under 800 hours PIC helicopter. Helicopter flying and ownership has been both challenging and rewarding. . . . Oh, and did I mention FUN? Sure, Owning and piloting your own helicopter will make your bank account lighter, but nobody can buy back time. If you can afford the price of admission I would encourage you to buy a ticket to helicopter world, now playing. Safe flying everyone!

Been dreaming about learning to fly for years, am 56 years old, semi-retired, and now seriously considering getting my PPL. Not considering buying an aircraft at this point though, but open to it, if and when it makes sense.

40hrs for Private in the US, but expect to be good enough at 60hrs to pass the practical. I think everybody should train to the commercial level if they can afford it. It makes you a better pilot.

I'm in South Australia and have just said goodbye to Seventy Two, purchased a R44 when I was 58, flew that for six years as a private and decided to go back to stiff wings a couple of years after giving up helicopters, would love to get back to helicopters but very aware that unless your fully on the skills helicopters can bite really hard, only have to look at the insurance premiums to understand that, in Australia we as a private pilot have a BFR Biannual Flight Review. I would certainly recommend anyone getting their own helicopter, they are without doubt the best off road vehicles ninth world.Do get a great thrill out of your channel, I can feel my feet dancing when you do some of those tight approaches. After I retire from working in the airlines, my dream is to buy a Bell 430 or 222, paint it like Airwolf, and fly tours in some paradise like the Bahamas.

Your story about the 77 yr old guy is why I'm likely to stay a sim pilot. Respawns are much more difficult in real life. I wish I had gotten into this when I was young but I took a different life branch and sometimes you need to recognize and accept where you are in the tree.

I'm 62 year old engineer, and was looking at buying a lake lot home in Texas for retirement, when I saw that not far from the house, next to the water was a open building with a pad in front. Seems its a hanger for a helicopter. I thought this was so cool. I started looking around found a few sites with information on the differences in helicopters, and started thinking of what I needed to fly it. That's when I found your channel. Not sure I'll go through with it, but would love to buy a Bell 505 ranger. I think it would be great to fly friends around the lake, pick them up at the airport, and fly out to my ranch a few hours away... Really think this would be a blast.

Since I was a little girl I've wanted to fly helicopters, now 72 and recently began gathering information on them....and now following you and learning at a rate of knots. I live in Cape Town, South Africa - the Cape of Storms!! I believe that God places desires in us which He later plans to fulfill, and because of recent business developments, I began to look into it and feel confident that this desire will become a reality. I feel that buying a two seater is restrictive/selfish and hope to procure a five seater. I still ride my Blackbird Superbike but am aware that my responses are not as quick as they used to be. Should my 38 year old son want to fly as well then I will purchase and learn on my own craft. I take your advice seriously about regularly being tested for skill and competency....and feel it's a sensible thing to have two pilots on board no matter what their ages. So I'm checking with friends who would like to learn to fly....the more the merrier. Thank you so much for your diligence and detailed videos. You're a blessing. Belle.

I am 52+ and I am working towards my commercial helicopter pilot licence at helicentre in Leicester UK. I found this school to be very supportive an encourages you to strive for professionalism and safe at all time. I will buy a carbi G2 helicopter because it is what I am training on . it is much more stable than the R22. The isn't a helicopter school here but we are very near to France .

I like your advice very much. I live in La Paz, Baja, Mexico and I just bought an AK 1-3 helicopter. The factory in Ukraine is making it now and it will be ready in April 21. I am looking at purchasing a helicopter for private use. Which would fly me between properties in Boquoete Panama (4500' elevation) and Bocas del Toro Panama (30' elevation). Which is a 3 hour drive and 45 minutes boat ride each way. Also allow me to get to the Airport and capital city Panama. What is you opinion on the EC130?

Signed a LOI on a 2018 Bell 505 here in Florida before the world started to end and am still moving forward with it. Flew back and forth a few times looking at it and examining the maintenance records like a hawk with a mechanic I know and trust. Was considering leasing it to my old flight school so they could use it for tours and other needs within their fleet to help with costs but my accountant ran the numbers and it's not needed at all. Had to request permits from the city I live in to build a helipad on my own land, they said no... was informed by my lawyers that I can build one on top of my dock and wouldn't need any approval from the city to do it. Will be 31 next month and hope to have it all done by then. Being that computer nerd truly paid off.

Glenn Finn 70 year old, Got my private pilot rotor wing in 1978 in a Enstrom 280 , living in Moab Utah, great aircraft, went on and got my commercial rotor wing in a bell 206 B3 jet ranger, safest helo. ever built . Stopped flying in 1983, when family got tired of moving from job to job. Logged in 1958 hours total time in those two helos. Never pass up the chance to fly.

2nd hand H125 with me that I also could lease back as well. I tried the R66, R44 and the Cabris and they didnt feel as comfortable to me, especially the Cabri cabin felt tight because I'm on the heavy side so the H125 felt that it fit me much better for Scandinavian, Iceland etc flights that I do.

I’m an airline pilot and would love to get a single engine Huey to explore the Southwest. I watched your videos comparing turbine to recip, and the video comparing a Bell to a Robinson. Both very well done. I see used Hueys listed from $500-1M with time left on them. Would an old Huey be more expensive to keep flying than a new R-66 or Bell 505?

I've been wanting to fly for a long long time. Finally got to the age and financial plateau to get one for my needs and drezm. Rotorway 162 looks to be a great machine that I can build and m a Intan together me around my Northern California mountains and beaches. I'm 43, live in the Caribbean and for private flying only, I would say from the small option of a ROTORWAY 90 EXEC for $50k to fly alone, to an MD500 for $500k to fly with friends and family to deserted beaches on other small islands around us...

Im 51 and live in Australia. I'm looking to get a commercial licence soon. I don't think I can afford what I'd like but I do want a Mosquito xet, as an excuse to keep my hours up, as well as practice, but the idea is to travel and lease or hire when needed. Iam fix wing and rotor Pilot, owned Schweitzer 300 & Enstrom Helicopter by the way was a money pit.. Planning to buy a Cabri the only other 3 bladed safe and affordable to operate , hands down best 2 seater choice.

In Australia, private pilots have a BFR or biannual flight review every 2 years . Same in other countries by the sound of it

Enjoy your videos, thanks. Had a MD500E here in Alaska 9 years private use sold and am buying a new R44 Raven 2 at 67 years old. Pilot in Alaska 40 plus years flying beaver and a cub. Little concerned some of the remote flying I did in the MD500 will require reduced weight and performance in the R44. Thinking the 12 year reliability of the R44 vs the expense of new turbine when most of the flying I do is only with one other person. Never ridden in a R44, delivery in Nov, the buyer of my MD500 already destroyed it, ugh Thought I would share as requested in one of your videos

Someday would like to buy either Hughes 500md or a Calibri at minimum cabri not r22 . Currently in Australia and would like to train in Canada with your flight school. I have been training on a simulator around BC and am very familiar with the area. I placed a helipads on mount Robbie and the power station and been most the places in your KZfaq clips even the heart shape pond and rubble dirt hills anyway great insight on helicopters you bring to us cheers and stay safe .......Perry

I'm in the U.S., I love helicopters for the ability to takeoff and land almost anywhere, however, I don't like the very limited range and speed, so I'm looking at other aircraft as well. I'm thinking something that combines VTOL with fixed wings and horizontal propulsion for long distance and speed would be ideal. There are actually a lot of new aircraft being designed and tested now. Some with huge tilt rotors (AW609), some with smaller tilt rotors built into the wing (trifan-600), some with a main rotor like a helicopter with a normal airplane wing with propellers or with a rear propeller. So many options. Not to mention the suppressed/hidden tech that may come to light in the near future, if things go well.

Let’s just imagine, for the sake of commenting your great video: I’m 51 and all my life wanted to fly helicopters. I live in Guatemala, Central America. Flying academies are available here, so getting the training and private license is not an issue, if you can afford it. I’d go for a Robinson R22. Many units are available here and the geographical proximity to the US makes parts available and at a reasonable price. Tourism is huge here. So, many places to go and see. Many climates in a small country also. Coast and mountain. So, that’s what I’d do. If I had the money. Just for the fun of doing something all my life was a deep desire and dream. And still is. 😊

I'm glad you cleared that up. I'm in my early 40's and am thinking about doing my license for private use. I did an introductory flight with Chopper Line at Caloundra QLD Australia when I was 23yrs old. The instructor at the time told me I was already getting to be too old if I was thinking of becoming a mustering pilot, as he said I had lost the teenage "I'm bullet proof" attitude. It kind of put me off and I never went back to it even though, I loved going flying with my Dad who finished his fixed wing private license in his 50's. What is the approximate cost for a private and or commercial helicopter license in Canada? 20yrs ago the price here for a commercial helicopter with a private fixed wing license was going to be $45,000.00 IF you managed on the first go. Hi Misha, just for you info, I have a private helicopter licence in the UK. We have to do a Licence Proficiency Check (LPC) every year. Which is, in my opinion a bare minimum!

What Helicopter would one buy if your looking into doing sight seeing, charter flights, private flights and also looking into some light utility flights as in flying for a hydro company to inspect their lines or delivering small parts?

I am a fixed wing pilot. I havent flown in 20 years but when I get my medical again I am going to get my rotor wing. I am buying a either a 505 or a 407. It will be in the desert of Arizona, in the plains of Iowa and also up in the Rockies. So hot and high will be important.

At about 60 yrs..5 yrs ago i actually did some research on buying an old 300 or 47 cross border and leaving it in Bellingham bring it into Can. For the legal time limit. Although technically one must be a u.s. citizen to own state side...there are ways to own indirectly. Some machines are far cheeper there and military parts can be used . Didnt get as far as checking ins. to carry that idea through.

What are the least expensive new helicopters to consider to buy for commuting daily between bases that are at an elevation of 6800 and 5300 ft? The commute is approx. 20 miles(so significantly less than a full tank of fuel would be required), pilot, passengers and baggage would not exceed 400 lbs. Could a Robinson R44 or R22, or Guimbal Capri G2 do the job?

I'm an 45 years old entrepreneur. I like the Zefhir by Curti Aerospace for the reliability of his turbine engine and his parachute safety to become mi personal tranport and mi guilty pleasure. The second option is the Robinson R66 for his 5 people capacity. In 3rd place i like the Eurocopter H-145 because it is an excelent helicopter. In four place i like the H-160 helicopter as an excecutive air trasport. At least I like the Bell 525 relentless. Time will say that aircraft is adecuate to me and my company. Or the other option is to buy a piston helicopter and just fly for fun.

A great alternative to store built birds, is to build one. Orville Neisingh is my neighbor and is the Rotorway guru. Building and flying your own helicopter is Heavenly.

In Germany (guess whole Europe) you have to do a check ride with an FI every two years as a private pilot to renew your class rating !

26-year-old living out in Pennsylvania; if I were to buy my own helicopter, it probably would be something easy to learn on. A common model that comes to my mind first is the Schweizer 300, since I've seen videos of student pilots learning to fly on that exact model. That's just my imagination, though; I'm open to flight training, but I can't see myself doing it due to costs - the costs here in the States, anyway. Was also interested in A&P - fixed wing and rotary wing.

I will never be in a position to buy a helicopter but I was wondering how difficult it would be for a training facility to instruct in a helicopter they don’t currently have an endorsement on. An example might be a Gazelle, how difficult is it for a training facility to get endorsed so they can properly instruct on a helicopter they haven’t previously flown. Is this something you would even take on?

Mischa, I'm looking to buy a helicopter in the united states. I'm in California (mostly these days), and I've been keeping my eyes on a few older, but in good shape, military OH-6A Cayuse helicopters. I'm in my mid 30's and while I don't have that sort of money to just throw at it for fun, I think it could greatly enrich my business. On the other hand though, I am scared that I'll get emotionally attached to this machine and end up making terrible financial decisions leading myself into ruin just to try and stretch and afford it. Do you have any videos on the maintenance that a turbine helicopter requires? You are such an inspiration, and I love watching your videos.
