I FOUND A JERR-DAN 28FT ROLLBACK FOR SALE. I TRIED TO IGNORE IT BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE A FEW BUT THAT DIDNT WORK OUT SO WELL. I HAVE BEEN GATHERING PARTS FOR AN UPCOMING BUILD AND THIS WAS INTENDED TO BE ONE THE KEY PARTS FOR IT. AFTER SOME CONSIDERATION, I THINK I HAVE DECIDED TO USE IT FOR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BUILD.

Well now, that would make a crazy "tiny-house" swap-body transporter. Especially if you had an acreage to leave the house on, whenever needing the flatbed for other uses. That way - you would have a portable home and an income earner - all in one unit.

The cab over I drove was a stretched out big bunk cabover KW back in the early 80s they took four 100 gal fuel tanks and welded two together for each side so you had 400 gallons it was setup to run to the west coast weekly it was hard to get into places from being stretched out like it was but it rode so smooth I ran back and forth from southwest Va up to Plymouth Ohio for onions took them to Knoxville Tenn and loaded what ever that went to Tampa or somewhere in that area then loaded produce coming back up every week . the 379 Pete would be nice as well but alot more work putting a sleeper on and so forth but it's your choice since you will the one building it and driving it but im looking forward to the build whichever one you choose

Came back to rewatch this video after watching the cab over video. My lowboy is rusty too though not as bad as the rollback. When I had the Mack on there, I had to let the air out of all the tires so I had the idea to put in wells 8-10 inches so the that wouldn’t be necessary. I want to do the work myself even though I’ve never welded or done anything like that before.

I agree that the red kw would be the best option, like you said. You will have to do the frame, suspension, wheel and tires anyways so may as well do it to something that'll have a sleeper. Cab overs are cool anyways. And with that n14 you have it'd be a pretty nice reliable truck when finished Putting a parts truck back on the road is really nice too, they don't make them anymore and it looks like it's got a lot of potential especially if you are in it for a good price

Fun to see the beginning of a project that you plan to keep! It is always hard to make something really nice and then see it leave! I just finished building a 27' rollback for myself, 1999 FLd112, 430hp c12, 10sp autoshift, full lockers. Yes I understand fighting the height issue and I thought about finding a car hauler chassis with the low 19.5's , but the ground clearance is so bad that I would always be dragging the tanks. I figured if I needed 6" of height either let the air out of the front tires, or wait for nicer weather and throw it on the Ledwell, with 17.5 tires I can get 11' high on the deck! have fun!!

I like the cab overs. The red truck would be cool. Out of curisoty, if you have to have some new frame rails made, what would the cost be, any guess? My only "cab-over" was a 1987 Toyota Van, and it was a blast to drive with a 88" wheelbase, working on the engine was a real PITA! How about using thicker, lower profile frame or drop frame to save the height

I just watched your video because i saw the title. I recently purchased a very old (1988) International cabover that i believe is a rebadged Nissan medium duty rollback with a JerrDan 26' Wrangler 2 bed. I think i got a very fair price. I was looking for a chassis to mount the bed on. I am tring to stay at 26k gvw. All the trucks i was finding were $55k to $70k for a used 250k+ mileage truck. Because i am in Kalifornia, we are dealing with the CARB compliance laws that i will not go into here. I have decided to find a gas truck. Just saying it makes me ill. I have owned several companies with hundreds of thousand dollars in equipment. No more. I am not feeding the system anymore. I hope to be in the finished truck for between $10-$15k. I'm tired of paying everyone else first and being left with crumbs at the end. I look forward to watching more of your videos. One thing i will say is that Kalifornia vehicles are like 18 year old virgins compared to the midwest or east coasts. I think it will take a couple of cases Sierra Neveda to get the images of the rust you have on that beds deleted from my memory. I wish you success with your build.

I'm kinda in the park with a lot of the guys on this. The red parts truck seems logically the best choice . The frame needs stretching and it has issues so swap out . Cabs still good needs a bit of TLC and maybe a polish . Wheels and tyres as you say will be swapped out anyway on whichever . You have engine and transmission options with what else you have in storage same as spare axles and lift axle . I really don't think it worth using the other kw as it's a good truck as is . In a nutshell the work you need to do to put a truck together requires everything you need to change out on this one . Personally your choice is already the red kw it's the most suited . So I'm gonna be watching out for the rebuild .

Will be interesting to see your approach to doing this bed up the way you want it. The NRC 40TB Bed’s are the cats meow but damn they are expensive even used. If it’s a truck your wanting to build for the long haul with no intention of selling than I think either of the k100’s. (If it were me it’s going on a Peterbilt 359 or 379 chassis but I have a soft spot for them) One thing I would do myself is Chop the pylon off the bed and build a stationary onto the truck just for the extra few inches of useable room to be gained.
@j.c.smithprojects
@j.c.smithprojects Жыл бұрын
i considered making the headache rack a permanent mount with a short stationary bed for manipulating the load and its over hang but it doesnt work well with a cabover. it would be in the way to work on the truck. i had also considered a knuckle boom crane behind the cab. i would much rather put it on the pete but i need a sleeper and i just cant make the length work.26ft total (including the under reach) is as long as the bed could be, i need the 28 and really want 30 like my big best rollback.

Question: Couldn't those wheel wells be retained and used for chain and tie down storage or even extra tools for when you're on the road? Just an idea. As for my pick, I'd go with the Kenworth "parts truck" as it would make more sense in the long run. Like you said, everything you're going to have to do will be the same things you'd need to do to make that Kenworth roadworthy again. A win/win situation, it seems.
