This video is just covering the basics of buying a house in the Algarve/ Portugal and the reality of renovating. Renovating is not easy, takes commitment, grit, patience and determination. This is based on my own experiences and nothing more. Slightly different from my normal videos but hope it will be of some use to anyone planning to move here. Thanks for watching and all your support

Andy, my wife, son, and I look forward to every Wednesday night and Saturday afternoon. Watching you walk around on your land just now, just beaming your pride of ownership, definitely spreads to us the goodwill and joy you are hoping to provide your viewers. In fact, I can't remember if I already said this in previous comments, but whenever we need to get to work and get a job done, we've taken to calling it "Andying" and somehow telling each other that we're going to do some "Andying" makes the work fun. After today's video, I can remind my son that if you're going to get something tough done, then you have to have "balls of steel!" Seriously, man. We really appreciate you!

Thank you for giving SO much of yourself.I can say as an actor from New York you have inspired me to buy a home and make an arttempt to perhaps pour a sidewalk or my dream goal would be to get into rock work on my home if I am fortunate to come.Just seeing you plant trees and concrete work reminded me that I can do it although it may not be perfect .At least I will have purpose in my life. I am tired of self centered people and I want to help myself and others.

13:23 _"...but heed my warning, it isn't easy, in any way, especially if you're planning on doing it yourself..."_ If it was easy, you wouldn't be doing it because everybody else would've done it by now. Good job Andrew, from the thawing, cold, Marxist jungle of 🇨🇦

For me the key thing from your video is you are determined to get things done and keep going without too much of moaning. I know it is not easy and you are doing it yourself alone but you are inspiring many like me to go towards similar goals of life to realise such a dream house! Keep going further and you will reap the rewards :) God bless

Your channel is indeed a welcome break from the parade of bad news, and I for one appreciate the advice on buying in the Algarve. Love seeing the things you guys accomplish. The grounds behind you are now so lovely and kept. I remember when you were working the yard into shape. The house will be just as lovey!

Once again a great video, I’m so glad you are telling people the reality of moving Lock stock and barrel over to the middle of no where. It is tough to move countries, no matter where. Any one who has done a fixer upper knows it’s difficult. Finding reliable workers. Finding friends and of course loneliness is a huge factor no matter were you live. I was raised in the UK and love living in the boonies in the USA. It was and is a huge adjustment. Lol. Even the language being a Scouce.

Looking good Andy... If I might add something... Because some of the farms were cut up by previous owners to share among their children, there are some properties where the border of the property can actually run through the house or through a shed or drive way or water well and even rivers. Rivers are often also public grazing and fishing areas so you might find someone from 10 properties down the road bringing his sheep throigh your land for a drink as he has habitually done that for 20 years or more. Where farms have stood open for some years means that the neighbours have been using the land for grazing, harvesting of fruit trees and bark trees etc. and you needs to clarify that you will be fencing off the land and or need to get permission to do so. There are also many farms that have traditionally allowed public hunting on them for decades during hunting season. Check that your property has no hunting licences attached. Best to ask the lawyer to make sure of the boundries and the above rights of way are clearly explained. You don't want to wake up with hunters shooting on your land or the neighbourhood fishing on your river because there's a section of broken wall or public access allowed to your property.

Check for lithium deposits. If your land or a neighbour's land has a lithium deposit, it's extracted as a surface mining operation. Portugal has the highest lithium content in Europe (mostly in the northern half), and you do not own the mineral rights if I'm not mistaken. I wouldn't want to live next to or on such a mining process; it's very destructive to the land.
@johnbarryheath8962
@johnbarryheath8962 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJx4000 Ouch, that would be a bad one. Especially when the world is in crises and governments make unusual decisions in order to save their economies... Russia supplies a lot of the world's lithium but is now blocked from selling it which might force countries to relook their own resources... True, living next to a lithium mine would be a disaster... or being moved off your land for the good of the country... even worse.

Not boring at all Andy. The processes sound much the same as here in France - find yourself someone to help with the bureaucracy from the get go!. Here in France they advertise in local papers. Buy yourself a cement mixer and wheelbarrow on day 1...and never think of selling them. :-)

Sound advice Andy. I'd recommend that anyone wishing a new life in Portugal is to "try before you buy". Come out in the winter for a month and then again in the summer for a similar period. We have a place in Lagos and spend as much time as we can there. We love it to bits but we also love the UK. We therefore made the decision not to move out full time. It's a big decision so don't jump in with your eyes closed!

Nice touch. Now get back to work! Hahaha. I think that will help a few people and probably more. It’s easy to get caught up in our fantasies isn’t it. Unfortunately reality doesn’t care and is a cruel teacher. You and your brother have a good work ethic which will get you to your finish line I’m sure. Unfortunately I’m to old and broken to even consider taking on a task of this proportion. I also lack the skills of the building trades. I love the idea of it all but I fear that these older homes have some issues than concrete, rebar and paint can’t fix. I’ve sent a few videos to my son who’s an equipment operator hoping to get his interest up. Time will tell. Thanks for sharing your time and experiences.
