Here's how you buys a used car from a dealer. Pick a model ahead of time. be prepared to pay cash. Research it. Get a good idea of the fair market value. Wait til the end of the month. Go check the car out, look under it for leaks, hook a scanner to it, test drive the hell out of it. Make a fair offer. If he says "no deal," walk, there lots of metal out there for sale.

@Mistachill
@Mistachill 5 жыл бұрын
here's what I find frustrating, people always say determine the "fair market value" but rarely explain exactly what that means and how you determine it. Is it trade-in value, wholesale value, average retail value, etc. And which car site should people rely on, KBB, Edmunds, NADA, etc.? None of the sites are consistent with their figures. I assume KBB is the worst because that's the one the car industry quote the most, so I figured it's slanted towards favoring the dealerships. That is the big missing piece of the puzzle that puts the consumer at a disadvantage, how to you get a reliable dollar figure on a car's "fair market value?" Personally, I've take the trade-in value from Edmunds and the wholesale value from www.vmrintl.com/ and get an average and use that in my mind to determine what is car is "worth" and use it as a benchmark to analyze the type of deal I'm getting. I have no idea if what I'm doing makes sense but it's hard to get anyone from the industry to share a better way.
@RobMarques
@RobMarques 5 жыл бұрын
@Nathan B Think about it this way. Instead of paying an interest bearing loan on a depreciating "asset" (cars are liabilities in real terms), make that car payment into an investment account for 5-7 years while you drive your current, debt-free vehicle. At the end of the term, you have the ability to pay cash for a car while putting less into it due to compounding interest. The more income you have, the more you can put into that account, and the more car you can afford. Rinse and repeat. This is a basic description, as many "wealthy" people have more complex investment strategies than a car-specific investment account, but it sheds light on how people can afford to pay cash for a car. Never borrow money for a liability. Borrow money for income creating assets (property, investments, etc.) which amplify your purchasing power. Money 101. If you truly make $80k a year in a local economy where the baseline is $40k, you should have zero problem making this happen. You just have to be willing to suffer with your existing car for an extended period to get it started. Ego vs. goals.

@@shawnliu4475 Roll backs rarely happen in the USA because the title ,and carfax will give you a good idea of where the mileage is supposed to be, and at least where i live the State of Florida takes that type of fraud very seriously , dealers can lose their license, to sell cars, so they just don't do it.
@veedub447
@veedub447 5 жыл бұрын
@Nathan B sounds to me like you are making a good income but are not very good at handling money. I make half your salary but could easily pay 10k cash for a used car tomorrow if needed and it wouldn't significantly deplete my savings. 7K is more than enough to buy a dependable used car. I would recommend a used Lexus ES, somewhere between 2006 and 2009. These cars are built in Japan at a time when Lexus had a very high standards of quality control. These cars easily go 250,000 to 350,000 trouble free miles.

I remember when I first started to finance was to help build credit. Biggest thing is the first time buyer and you get hit with that big interest especially if your credit is not that great. I knew that but researched the cars value and got it down to the price I wanted. Traded it in 6 mos later and cut that interest down a ton and dumped the negative equity as well. Plus credit went up and got something even cheaper and less on interest as well. Vehicle is a vehicle but credit is lke your financial report card.

Dealer owned, registered as a rental to get it from Newfoundland to Ontario and driven by the used car dealer. Had bumper damaged at 110km while at the dealership and it was repaired. Definitely regret buying the rust proof package, but all else really happy. Approaching 100000 km and no major problems.

Great video. I would add that no matter what you buy you should always walk out of the dealership. ALWAYS! Part of their game is to keep you waiting and take advantage of your lack of patience. 6-7 hours at a dealership and you will sign anything just to get out. It will also give you time to think things over and do more research. You won't see a dealers bottom offer on a vehicle until they think they'll lose the sale. It's also possible you could lose out on a car you really wanted but in the end it is worth it.

Cool vid. Something I like to do is always tell them, “I’ll think about it” and always have them pursuing you until they drop the price more. Something else I like to do is have a friend or family watch from a distance and then call me pretending to be another salesman from a different dealership saying they’ve agreed to my offer. I’ll then act excited and tell them “I’ll be right over to pick up the car”. At this point, the dealership will probably fall to their knees begging you to stay and they’ll drop the price even more

I have sold used cars for a long time. I let people walk over our Doc Fee everyday. Also we don’t get to fix our cars at “dealer cost” sales is charged full price for anything done by the dealer and at other dealers that cost is actually marked up for the owners to show higher profits in the service department. Dents and scratches are taken care of by outside vendors and that cost is also marked up by the dealer. There is very little mark up in used cars so 9 times out 10 the best price is listed online. Don’t waste your time trying any of these tactics because you will see the business is changing. It is not in our best interest to sell you a car and not make some type of profit.

It's a 2018 Honda Civic LX Coupe and it had around 55000km on it when I bought it. I looked at the other Coupe models and I actually got one of the cheapest ones. I think with the taxes and fees, the car was something like 22000$. I pay less than 200$ every two weeks for the car and within a few years, I'll have the car paid off. Easy on gas, tons of great features, reliable, easy to drive, etc. It's actually my second car and the first car I've bought from a dealership. Really nice and fun car and I plan to drive it until it dies.

1000% agree with bringing the car to a mechanic to have it looked at. I have been looking at a 2017 mustang gt and the dealer said we did a billion point inspection of the car and blah blah blah... so my mechanic found a leak between the transmission and the transfer case so now they are fixing it.

I had to pause the video halfway through to give people watching this video the real information, there are some truth to the things that you’re saying but I’ve been in the car business for the better part of 10 years now and the information you’re relaying most of it is not wrong but grossly overplayed and some underplayed. First of all you’ll always be able to tell if a vehicle is smoked in whether it’s winter or summer, they’re clearly was no smell in the car that you bought and when you found that cigarette but you got upset for no reason, if there’s no smoke smell then there’s no reason to worry about whether the car was smoked or not. You put a lot of emphasis on minor things like this but skip over the fact that disclosing whether a vehicle was a rental or not is the law, But rental cars are some of the cleanest and well-maintained that I’ve seen in my experience. What you fail to realize and maybe it’s because you’ve never rented a car, but people treat things that they don’t own much better than the things that they do own. Rental cars are maintained daily and you suffer serious penalties if you mistreat a rental, my advice would be to find a clean rental car and that would be a much better deal than a one or two owner because you get the depreciation of a car being a rental with none of the risk. Maybe we treat our cars better here in Canada but in 10 years of experience this is undoubtedly true. So you’re Playing up a lot of really unimportant details but then down playing one of the most important details when buying a used car, a branded title is a serious serious issue I would stay the hell away from a branded title car even as a dealer. But your only advice is to just check it out a little further? You skip over one of the most severe issues a used car can have, Branded titles whether it’s a salvage, rebuild or a lemon is probably the worst thing that you can buy. I’m not trying to shit all over your video, and undoubtedly I’ll get some heat because I’m not the famous guy on KZfaq but I do have a lot of experience and I can’t let innocent people get mislead by false information for the sake of some internet views and ad revenue. I’ve come back to edit this after watching the remainder of the video, I’m wondering what type of dealership you’re thinking these people are buying from, tires and breaks are part of a safety test done by law, Not a lot of these people are buying wholesale junkers, and dealers price accordingly to the cars condition. I think you’re setting a lot of people up for a negative experience. Lots of what you said I can stand behind but most of it is irrelevant if you’re buying from a big reputable dealer, and that’s the key point to this response. You’re saying a dealer but a lot of these tactics are better suited to a private sale or some side of the road crappy used car lot. Not a large scale reputable dealer, and I think that is going to cause a lot of people trouble. The best advice you can get when buying any car is find a dealership with great reviews, find a salesman you can trust and treats you well. Or ask for a referral from your friends who have had positive experiences. Stop making car buying unnecessarily complicated and scary! Also the people need to know you yourself are not in the car industry, you’re a financial advisor and that does not make you qualified in any way to speak on the inner workings of sales, negotiation, or the automotive industry. These are completely separate fields.

I usually buy cars about 12 to 15 years old usually Toyotas, Lexus or Scions where the cars can get well over 200,000 miles or more for the life the engine and transmission and have timing chains or mesh gears for timing. I look for cars that have around 100,000 to 120,000 miles on them. I pay cash they are affordable usually in the 2500.00 to 6500.00 range in US dollars. These cars are in pretty good condition. I put bare bones insurance on them and if they get wrecked, I can get another one pretty cheap. When at dealer I usually offer to pay about 1/3 the price of the car and will settle if really want the car at 1/2 or 2/3 the cost of the car. Usually if your Used Car Dealer has brains (and they do) they will buy the car as cheap as the can and usually raise the price of the car three time the cost of the car. Then there are those other dealership that only have one price. I don't care for them they do have fair prices but I really like dickering back and forth over the price of a car. For me it is the fun part of buying a car.

Hey Mike. I'm driving a 2001 Rav4 with 233,000 miles on it. Started having transmission problems and had a retired Toyota mechanic look at it. Turns out it was only the trans computer that wasn't working right, but the trans hadn't been damaged yet. He sent it out to be refurbished, but they didn't fix it correctly, so he found one in a junk yard in Ohio and swapped it out, and now she's running great again. The #1 problem with the 2001 is transmission issues. I wanted to get 300,000 miles out of her, but nervous, waiting for something to happen. Some videos say not to wait for your car to die, but how do you know how long you've got? It's like timing the stock market. I like the idea of getting a less old model such as 6-7 years old, and they are out there, but I don't want to spend the money this year. I wonder if a dealership or used lot would let me drive it to my mechanic to look at it. I'm not really asking you a question, just commenting.

@@AgendaInMind That is pretty good mileage you got out of the RAV4. 19 years ago I had a Sonoma with a manual transmission the technology was new at the time for computerizing automatic transmission I look for a simple vehicle with a manual transmission back then and waited for the industry to perfect the automatic transmission. Research the market and see which models of car you are looking for has any faults or recalls for years you want. There are plenty of website you can find if you do a search. I believe the dual clutch transmission is something you would want to stay away from the industry is still having a lot of problems with this type of transmission. Buying used will save you money . Every car depreciates no matter what kind is it . Unless its a Toyota Tacoma . Those trucks hold there Value . Financing is easy as long as you are a 690 and up you should be under 5% depending on the term . Also be sure all your credit cards are not maxed because BANKS will give you a bit higher of A.P.R . Car insurance isn’t expensive as long as you have a clean record . If your buying a sports car then be worried about insurance lol .

So happy to have found your videos! Bought my first car from carmax with no credit history and was in a situation where I needed the car literally that month. Paying insane %13.45 interest on a 2008 impala that has nickle and dimed me after a year of driving it. A little bit past halfway into my financing contract and now with a good credit score and some money down I’m looking to trade in for a 2016/2017 civic. Unfortunately, many of us are in situations where we have to take that first very shitty deal. However, we learn and get ourselves to a place where our second purchase is much better deal. Have any used car inspected, by an independent mechanic of the you are choosing from any affiliation of the place of purchase. I worked with a Young Lady in Florida whom purchased a used car. The car kept breaking down. One night after work on a Friday her car broke down 1/2 mile from her home...in 2003 sadly she has never been seen again.....have at least $500.00 for inspection for about 5 cars. If the car fails the inspection. Go to another choice on your list. It if you can afford minor repair work subtract a $1000.00 from the price. Don't become emotionally involved with the and don't take the salesmen word on the repair. Have it inspected!!!!!

So after a little over a month of driving this car, I am in love!! I use the clean ethanol-free gas, yes it cost a little extra, but it's worth it to keep this car at its peak... And I will be using the full synthetic oil !! A few more details, it has the 3M clear bra across the front of the car... It drives like a dream, and I've had very nice cars in the past ( Mustang, Corvette, Cadillac, Olds Cutlass)... it gets on it when I need it to, it has all the bells and whistles inside that I need for connecting any device, also the display showing me how the power is being dispersed from the engine to the battery to the wheels etc, it's fun to watch... The infotainment center is great and very easy to use and fun. But the best thing happened two days ago... Yes it has dual sunroof/ moonroof, however that works I can't figure the roof yet :-) and how it folds in on itself...anyways...!! I was driving, I press the button for the sunroof panels to open, it being a nice day and all, and expecting the little lift in the glass for the ventilation and the entire thing opened up on me, I almost crashed!! Now it feels like I have an entirely new car :-) it's almost better than my Mustang and Corvette that we're both convertibles... But I guess the entire car in general, is just awesome, I've always liked the sedan type, the looks, the feel, the drive... I think it's the best deal I've ever made!!... It is a 2014 Hyundai Hybrid Limited, it has on both the right and left side on the front quarter panels, the words Blue Drive... the speedometer says 160 miles per hour it has 68000 miles on it... And I paid $10,000 at a dealer!!

I’m a manager at a Nissan dealership and I like watching videos like this once and while to get an idea of what customers are researching before they come into the dealership. This turned out to be a really good video and a lot of the information you gave was correct. I usually use those things that you said when closing a deal with a customer, like showing them what the average person has paid, using Truecar or Edmunds. All the information is online for customers to see so being transparent is the best policy. Here in LA the competition for used cars at the auto auction is tough and the margins are a lot less than 10%, you’d be surprised. Most used cars we lose money after we get them certified from the manufacturer because the guidelines cost a lot of money(for example paying $300 for a new key because the last owner didn’t give it to us or removing aftermarket tires to get it back to stock). We make up for the cost with financing and selling manufacturer extended service contracts that can help save money on future repairs. I hate when customers come in to offer cash. I’ve had people drive from Nevada, San Diego and every San Francisco to get a deal on a used vehicle because we price below market average but it just hurts when they pay cash. Some customers we make money on and some you lose money on. I enjoyed your video because your are giving accurate info on what to expect and look out for when buying a car from a dealer but not bashing on the sales people. We’re normal people who want to make a fair living too and sales is great to have a great working environment and talk to people from different backgrounds that you normally wouldn’t meet and have the opportunity to gaveconversations with.

This is a super super super late comment for something like this video but heres a few tips I can offer anyone looking to purchase after I the majority of my younger years were spent working in the business! Buying a new car is vastly different from a Pre-Owned, so I wont focus on that right now. First, KBB is so so far off it isnt even worth looking at. Black book clean wholesale, plus or minus a few hundred dollars, is a good idea of what the dealer is going to own the vehicle for after their shop costs. They will often market the vehicle somewhere around NADA clean retail and most likely only have 500-1000 of wiggle room in this day and age. Always request a CarFax and check the VIN as well as ask for the Dealer’s RO(Internal Repair Log). Make sure you test the brakes for vibration and the transmission to see if it slips when you test drive. No dealer will mind if you take the vehicle to your own trusted mechanic as long as you dont keep the vehicle too long or cause any damage. If a vehicle has history from being up north, also ask if they can put it on a rack for you in their shop to check for rust/leaks. ***The best deal when it comes to reliability is going to be any brand’s Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles OR a vehicle that originated as a CORPORATE vehicle(listed on CarFax), a vehicle from out of the US, or a manufacturer buyback(Just make sure they provide a 1-2yr warranty at no cost to you on these).

Ok. I sell both new and used cars at a large dealership. First most of the comments on this are false just as a rule. Secondly don't buy a car from a dealer. Lastly you never EVERRRRR "got the best deal on a car possible." The store owner always has a pack. New or used.

why shouldn’t you buy a car from a dealer?

Keepingup_ withKay it was kind of a broad generalization to be fair. I would say you have to weigh what is important to you. You’ll spend a fair amount more money at a dealership for the same car being sold by a private party, it will be high stress, and at the end of the day you may honestly go home with a different car than you intended. But. It will be a very streamlined “smooth” process and more than likely the car will be in a sound mechanical state.

oh okay i see, one more question if i’m buying a used toyota at a toyota dealership with 17k miles do you think i should still bring a mechanic? or because it’s sold at toyota it’s ok?
@Badger1776
@Badger1776 4 жыл бұрын
Keepingup_ withKay if it’s a dealership they have to do a thorough inspection and repair any major issues before they sell the vehicle. Also see if it’s a certified pre owned Toyota. (But on a side note... it’s a Toyota. It’s gonna be fine unless it was left in a pond overnight 😂) jokes aside that low mileage of any Toyota is unlikely to have any issues.

Badger 1 yeah that’s why i made sure to mention toyota😭 i wish i could pay you to help me looks at cars lol & i thought that as well. but i know dealerships are cheap as hell so i figured they might have foun a way to get around a thorough inspection.

Jason, thank you so so much for such a useful video. You are the genius in what you are doing. Your video is like a guide, an instruction that covers and explains everything an inexperienced buyer needs to know. I am looking for a used car, really can't pay more than 200 for a loan..I have so many other issues in life..and my old car broke. I am a female with kids. After watching your video I at least know where to start.

I want to buy a used car. Some one advised me on getting a loan from the bank in the form of a certified check and look for a set price. And work around the dealers financials. And just pay for the car directly to the bank.

There's nothing wrong with using dealer financing as long as you verify that they don't bump your rate and you don't buy the add-ons. Dealers are allowed to bump your interest rate anywhere from .5% to 3%. If you talk to your bank first and find out what rate you qualify for, there's no harm in using dealer financing as long as you get the same rate you would've gotten from your bank. In fact, if you play it right, you may even get a little better sale price on the car by using dealer financing. Most banks will give the dealership a few hundred bucks just for using them. So often times, you can get the dealer to knock a few hundred bucks off the sale price since they know they're going to get it back from the bank anyway. Just be sure they don't bump your rate and you don't buy any of add-ons and you'll be fine.

Don’t ever get a used car from any used dealership. Because most people don’t have good credit so your paying high interest rate. Next thing your 5k car is 9k . Plus the role the car right from the car auction . And if you get a car spend the extra 100$ to have a car mechanic take a look at your car . ✌🏼

To add to this, get a used car that is backed up with good history of reliability. In that case, I highly recommend Toyota or Honda as the best used car in the market. Dont go for European cars for used car because they cost an arm and leg just to maintain and often they break a lot. I have a 2005 infiniti G35 with 192k miles and still running good with little maintenance and repairs. I also had a 2012 vw jetta which is a problematic car to begin with and I regret buying this car. Good thing I have bought extended warranty in this car because of the repairs I put on this car. Eventually I traded it in to a 2010 scion xB and by far more reliable and also by miles a lot affordable to maintain.

Mudisuda Raman i agree. Since renault partnered with nissan everything gone bad on nissan. Now with variable compression that will make more complication with nissan engines especially with infiniti. To be honest, I am leaning towards older gen cars because it has lesser complications and tech although safety is better on newer cars.

I've bought 3 cars since 2014: New 2014 Dodge Avenger (2014) Used 2016 Chevy Cruze (2017) Used 2014 Jeep Wrangler (2019) I was bent over at the dealership with the Dodge. The salesmen didn't care whether I was getting a good deal or not, he just wanted a sale. I just kinda went to "look" and left with a new car and 3X the payment I had. Did zero research. Told myself never again. Bought the Cruze from CarMax. Got pre-approved before buying it. CarMax was a solid experience. My wife loves the car. So by the time I got around to buying the Jeep Wrangler, I was ready. I walked in with pre-approved financing from my credit union. I had a number in mind as to what I wanted for my Dodge (it took me 4 years and an $8k paydown plus paying for the price of the vehicle in principle and interest on the loan to refi it where I could manage it and maybe trade it in) and confidently went in. I was looking for $5800, which wasn't unreasonable for a '14 with 86k miles on it that was in really great shape mechanically and was kept clean. I took it to the car wash and vacuumed it out prior to going to the dealership. So when they came in from briefly looking at it and said they'd give me $4k for it, I told them "no", that it's worth more than due to its condition. So the manager "drives" it on the lot and magically adds and additional $1400 to the trade in value. It's close enough. I make above average income, but my credit has been suffering (thanks to the first Dodge car loan), so I got a single digit interest rate (mine was close to 18% for the Dodge the first time) and a payment only $100ish more per month financing over twice the amount I owed on the Dodge. I looked everything over: the Carfax, the recall repair paperwork, the inspection documents. I asked the guy to explain everything to me even if I knew what it was. Worked out for me. We took the Jeep from SC to NJ a few weeks later for the Holidays and had no issues.

Carfax doesn't always give you truth about accidents that the car had. I tracked a 1997 Cougar I used to own and I had 2 wrecks in and the insurance paid to have it fixed. I eventually traded for AWD SUV. I told the dealership about the accidents and repairs. When I tracked it on CARFAX at 6mons. and 1 year later, it never showed having any accidents. The first repair was done by a National Body Shop (Carstar) that was recommended by the Insurance Company, the other accident was by and Independent/Local Body Shop. So I don't who was supposed to report the accidents (Insurance Co, Body Shops, or Dealerships), to CARFAX, but they never got reported.

I bought a used Mazda from a Dodge dealer because of a great deal. It was obvious that the employees were trained SALESMEN and not trained CAR salesmen. I learned to always get the car checked by a mechanic. After just a couple of weeks after purchase, the paint ran off the right front fender. The Dodge dealer said take it to a Mazda dealer to see about the paint warranty. The Mazda dealer literally took one look at the car and said it had been in an accident but they would check for frame damage. Testing showed it wasn't Mazda paint on the fender. The Dodge dealer agreed to repaint the fender but I even had to have them redo the original job. They gave me a loaner and the battery died. The replacement loaner's battery died, too...

I call BS on the bad treatment of cars by drivers who rent them. What do you do differently? Do you race them? Ignore speed limits? Take curves too fast? Slam of the breaks all the time? Gun the engine at stop lights? What do you do to them?

@@HonestFinance Still not buying it! You said YOU do, but now you deny it and I say you are only passing on the rumors, including those people who claim they abuse the cars, but there is absolutely no reason to. You still get a speeding ticket if that is what you are doing. You still have to worry about damages you might cause and you are still paying the rent while that car is being fixed if you abused it that much. The REAL reason not to buy a rental car is they are made cheaper! They are fleet cars that only need to last as long as the rental company plans to keep them. Cheaper tires, no doubt, so you will have to replace them sooner. Cheaper radio/music/infotainment consoles. Fewer "standard" accessories and amenities. The list goes on. Those are the reasons not to buy a rental car.
