Being in the rust belt, you will have rust. There’s no avoiding that. You could’ve rebuilt your own front end for around $1000. The ball joints are the only job that would really suck. Find the company near you that installs utility beds, typically they have brand new takeoffs beds for 12 or 1300 bucks.

Other than the exhaust that stuff applies to all 3/4 and up trucks. Really all trucks, but since heavier trucks all tend to have been used harder, they have a lot of problems in common. If I lived in the rust belt it would be worth it to me to buy a truck from a southern state. It's not just body rust you to worry about, everything underneath is so exposed. A few hundred for a plane ticket could save you a few thousand. I see car carriers all the time hauling used vehicles from the South to the North, and from the North to the South. Dealers can get northern vehicles cheaper, and people don't always check. Your truck does look good in the video.

Well…you can look at it one of two ways. You made a mistake, or you made a decision and learned what to to next time. Biggest takeaway is don’t make the same mistake twice 👍

I totally agree with the fact you should know what your buying. I baught a 2005 Ford ranger with the 4.0 V6. I have a 2013 Mazda 6 manual that I absolutely love but I needed a truck. I overlooked so many things on the ranger when I baught it. Granted I only paid 300 dollars for it. I totally ignored the fact it had a hard time starting I thought it may if been the battery. The bed was rusted out which I knew. But after all was said and done I found a joke in the floor board a weak spot in the frame which I had fixed. I put in a new starter a new fuel filter a new thermostat and nee headlights and a new bed. All in all I spent probably 850 on the truck total. I love the little truck. In upstate New York it's really all I need being 19 but my dream truck is a F250 king ranch 6.7. One day I'll get it.

It’s interesting back in the day when someone drove a diesel it’s because actually worked with it today every kid has one .. In my opinion you get the best for your money when you buy them two years old or 1 year old with 20,000 miles.. you can get a 2019 for example with 40,000 or less miles for 48k . Or a 2015 with 140k . For 39$ they hold value it’s worth adding $100 to your monthly finance and maintain your truck the way it should be from the beginning Or at least closer to less Mile.. I purchased my 2017 F350 6.7 xlt dully with 18,000 miles . At the time it was about a year and a half old I payed 48k now 2021 I could probably get the same amount back I have 48,000 miles .. it’s worth leading the extra money upfront.. diesels for some reason hold amazing value when they’re 7 to 10 years old Best time to sell and if no mechanical problems Basically cost you 10 - 12 k to use a truck for eight years zero issues. Or ride it till the fucking wheels fall off... when you buy these old trucks there a money pit If a motor or something big goes they’re not worth anything put your money into a newer truck the money is there ... I had a 97 12 valve with 400,000 miles Long story short cost me 20 grand to operate the truck for four years I had it. That’s $500 a month you add another 200 a month and you’re in a brand new truck and the resell value is there ... when my motor blew on the 12 valve it was worth shit with 400k truck

My grandpa had the death wobble on his 2013 f250 and he took it to the Ford dealership and he didn’t pay a dime for it and they replaced the entire front end, he replaced the tires also which was the only thing he paid for, plus they gave him a brand new 2019 F150 loaded to drive while it was being worked on, wound up having I think about $5,000 in replacement parts (excluding the tires) that he didn’t pay a dime for, recommend taking it to a Ford dealership if the death wobble comes back

2017 and up are all aluminum and are highly recommended for road salted areas

I did the same thing bouth an 06 f350 had 232k miles test drove it felt in love for it on interstate scared the hell out of me, took it to a shop to get alignment and they said brake caliper was fked, but I fixed it now it’s a solid truck. 🤣

If you are looking for a project and you find one you always wantedand you want to know if you can squirt a little diesel fuel in the throttle body and it pops the low rumble as it turns all the way around then fires of fule only then its a good motor if it has not ran for a long a wile but fires means its not a eather baby and the motor has good conpression and as long as the body and frame has very little rust just a lot of sanding and cleaning and rebuilding of some parts and you can get the truck fro a good price then get it home and start with the frunt end then the hood and finders iner finders

So people are aware, front end total replacement is 5k, rust repair will be 3k per item, bed is another 3k maybe. You’re looking at around 11k EXTRA for repairs. Sucks but at least you learned a valuable lesson. 36k for a great running diesel with that mileage is not HORRIBLE. Trust me I’ve seen worse. If you take care of all the issues and do it right you’ll have that truck in a very good situation.

I Talked with a diesel mechanic he said only get the 7.3 not the 6.0 6.4

Honestly it's not that bad. 90% of that you could probably do in your garage yourself. Wouldn't cost as much as you spent. Just the cost of the part labor would be free since you're doing it yourself

My aunt is giving me her 2012 6.7 it only has 75k on it. I know nothing about diesels. Any tips? I won't be doing any heavy hauling just tools. Might make it a stealth camper

Emission controls in the late models ruined diesels. What’s interesting is NEW diesels are getting more and more expensive to repair; but this guy had some pretty cheap shortcomings with this truck compared to what I’ve heard about Powerstrokes made after 2007.

Perhaps you should have had your "trusted mechanic" inspect the truck BEFORE you bought it!

Everything you listed except the exhaust has nothing to do with diesel specify, and is something you should check on all used vehicles when buying one. As for the exhaust you would want to check that on diesel or gas to see if they are rusted out. But especially 2007 and later diesels, with DPF and DEP. If its deleted who did the delete? You never mentioned anything involving the motor itself which it something you would really want to check on a used diesel, checking the blow by. If you have a bad motor a new Cummins will cost you 10k just for the motor not including the labor. Checking the turbo, replacing a bad turbo could cost you 3k alone.

I think that you got a good truck but not sure about the deal. Normally when I buy a used truck I run it through the dealership and ask them to look it over with a fine tooth comb. I spend the next two years getting all of the repair work done.

Honestly, everything listed could have been avoided if you actually paid attention when buying. The whole 2600 for the front-end work is not bad actually since you didn't do the work yourself but that could have been negotiated when buying. The rust was a stupidity on your part. But I will say you're young and these are lessons that you will learn from and not make again.
