For as long as I can remember I have loved the look of the John Deere 430 Diesel powered garden tractor. I seized the opportunity to get one for cheap, but it needs some serious TLC.

I'm mostly an orange tractor guy, but I have to say that overall that is a damn fine specimen of a 430 and I am a little envious! Also for the love of god please don't refer to that exquisite garden tractor as a lawn mower!! Zero turns and Snappers are lawn mowers, that is a diesel garden tractor from the glory days of garden tractors! They sure as hell don't make them like that anymore! 😊

Its definitely real compared to the belt drive stamped steel crap most people call a mower, but its not the kubota b5200 I have, talk about a seriously overbuilt 13hp lawn mower. we call it the massive mower or the tiny tractor depending on what we are doing with it at the moment.

I bought one of those 4 years ago and took it down to the frame. Had everything but the hood powder coated including the wheels. It took a year but I got it 100% complete all hydraulics, 3 point and rear pto. I used those tractors in high school new in the 80s at an amusement park. I must have cut thousands of acres. I bought the one I restored hoping to find a tiller and front end loader. I spent a year looking at piles of rust and even bought plans to build a loader to factory specs. $5k later and not being able to find a tiller I sold it at a loss. It was a good idea that just didn't pan out. The parts are like buying gold! I bought a new 25 hp 4x4 tractor with everything I wanted and actually use it unafraid to get it dirty! lol

Back in the 90's and into 2000's for 13 years I mowed 6 acres and plowed my drive with my 430. BTW when Deere came out with the 755, 855 and 955 compact tractors they used the 430 hood. Also, the JD hyd. blade had about an inch of down pressure, rare on a garden tractor but handy. Liked your vid!🦾

The 430 is still a beast of a garden tractor. There's alot of those and the 455's that have over 2000 hours on them with nothing but general maintenance. My 758 still has that same 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel. Excellent machines.

You aren't old enough to remember the "Gas" shortages and odd and even plate numbers on vehicles being able to fill up only if your plate matched. This was in Virginia. This was also under Jimmy Carter's administration. In the wake of the 1973 Oil Crisis, gas stations across the country enacted different rationing policies and standby rationing plans were introduced. I have a friend who cut lawns during that period and he couldn't buy any gas for his push mower to cut lawns, so to get around that restriction *he converted his gas push mower to run diesel.* Diesel was not restricted and he had all the lawn business he wanted as a kid. He still does mechanical work on anything today. My Uncle, during the same period, had a hand crank pump that allowed our family to syphon off all the gas the allowed cars of the day (odd or even plate numbers) could get fueled. He would transfer the gas to a 55-gallon drum and when we couldn't get gas and needed it, the drum was usually full so we filled up or got what we needed from the 55-gallon drum until we could fill up at the station again. After the vehicles were syphoned off we would go back if we had time and sit in line and fill up for the second time that day. The stations, of course, ran out at the pumps often when you went in early or for the second time. Gas was a gamble, but diesel was easy.

We mow a large acreage. Basically 3 different farmsteads and a bit of the field access roads. I got a 445 with a Kawasaki motor, big mistake! thing didn't last a week before it couldn't keep oil in it. At the time the parts for rebuilding it were more than the value of the tractor, as Deere had the parts supply all tied up. I've collected different L&G trctors over the years, cub cadet , Sears Suburban, etc. The 445 was a good size for what I needed, but spending 3 K for a repair was out. I finally bit the bullet and bought a late Deere 495 Diesel, not cheap, but we love it! Later found a 445 (455?) Diesel version and it is a real horse, son grabbed it for his use! I need to find either a rebuild for the blown engine one or a diesel motor for it. The thing has all the extras on it, just need to get it running again!

I bought a brand new one in 1989, but mine is the 420 (Onan 20hp gasser). Still mowing our 4 acre`s to this very day. Only major thing i`ve had to do is replace the crank seals due to the front one was leaking on the PTO clutch for the mower, a new muffler, a new JD420 seat, and a throttle cable. Other than that, my 420 has been the best little tractor i`ve ever owned to date. The 60 inch deck is starting to get rough now, and you can`t buy them anymore. I also bought a brand new Kubota BX23s back in 2017, they`re a great tractor too. Parts are getting hard to find these days for thee ole JD420, so if an when it dies, the Kubota will take over the job full time. I use the BX for things that the 420 can never do. (backhoe & frontend loader work). Anyways, good to see the JD430 here in your video, they are great little tractors! Good on ya for fixin`er up!!! Looks good!

A good one like that goes for pretty big bucks up here in Minnesota. That's actually not a bad deck. Next time you have it off go over the surface rust with a wire brush on a grinder and then treat it with rust converter. Then paint ir with the special Rustoleum no rust primer. That stuff works real well. Great idea on the corrugated plastic. Again, those hoods are EXPENSIVE, so try to do what you can to sae it. If you ever want to paint it PAINT RIGHT OVER THE DECALS, then put the new ones right over the top. It really helps to locate where to put the new decals, and no one will ever see that you put them on top of the old ones. Good luck!

Doing some good work there young gun. I'd like to add a little tip that will make your life easier. Whenever you change, or repair ANY electrical connections. Be sure to Solder the new connections. These will last damn near forever as opposed to the quick Crimping ones. Learned this a long time ago and it really does pay off in the long run. And not to be a nag, but always wear some kind of eye protection when your cutting or grinding. You only get one set of eyeballs, and your gonna need 'em for a long time! lol Keep at this, your doing great!

I've had one of these for about 16 years. Other than minor leaks and items, I've not had to perform any repairs on it, just the usual maintenance items. I have almost every attachment made for it - mower, snowplow, snowblower, front 540rpm PTO, 3pt linkage, moldboard plow, tiller, cab, two sets of rims with ag and turf tires, front-end loader, and a Tilt-Dump vacuum. I think about the only attachment I don't have is the center plow. Everything works as expected. I turbocharged it just for grins but did not turn up the fuel so it's really just a bit of a gimmick - it probably has a bit stronger torque but not any additional power.

Are your glowplugs working? Seems to crank over more than it should before starting. Even in warm weather these engines like some glow. Also, are you missing the vent tube (blow-by tube) on your valve cover? If so, that would explain the oil around it, as there will always be some slight oily mist flowing out when hot on an engine of this age. I don't think the hood looks too bad really, if you found an original lens it might complete it...
@EquipmentRevivalYT

I actually believe they may not be working correctly, i will have to dig into that next! As for the breather tube, when I bought the tractor it had one, it shattered like glass when i went to remove it. I ended up replacing with a new rubber hose, i must have forgotten to include it on this video. Thanks for watching!
@volvoben2
@volvoben2 19 күн бұрын
@@EquipmentRevivalYT Yes, the original tube is an odd plastic that has to be heated to become pliable to be removed. Glow plugs should be easy enough to test, and in the worst case the module is about $100 for OEM. I didn't know my module had failed on my 755 (same engine) until it got cooler in the fall and it took longer and longer to start. With working plugs she starts in a second or less, even when quite cold.
