Bought a 5 piece Mapex Meridian Birch Bespeckled, almost new. Has Remo heads. Then upgraded the cymbals to Zildjian K 22 inch custom ride, (still will swap for a 20 inch) Zildjian A 18 inch crash and a sweet Sabian AAX 13 inch hi hat. My budget was £500 and I done it via flipping a haul of expensive cymbals, kept the ones we wanted (K ride and 18 inch A custom crash) and also selling off our old Pearl Forum. If you want breakdown, reply to this comment.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned but is a MUST is a tech/musician BUDGET! As a church installer, I see too many churches that have broken and outdated gear and instrument components. This was a tough discussion for even me at my church. I’ve been to too many churches that are playing on 5 year old drum heads, guitar cabs with buzzy tubes, blown speakers etc. Try to ensure that your church has a MINIMUM budget of $2k a year specifically for your team to use for repair, maintenance, and upgrades. The better your gear performs, the more comfortable your team will be. Your focus then shifts from tech concerns to pure worship without worry of if your gear will make it through the set!

So true. My church has gone through this for years playing on old equipment. It wasn't until a year ago, the church invested in new equipment and recently got a new drumset a few months ago. Boy was I happy since I get to play on it now instead of patching up the old set we had. The drumheads that were replaced on the old set are still relatively new so maybe they can replace the stock heads on the new set once they wear out. The congregation has noticed a huge difference now in how the worship team sounds. I have received many compliments on how great everyone sounds.

PDP is fantastic for a very affordable kit. I’ve played in so many churches that have them, and they always sound way better than their price tag. Throw some Evans UV2s or EC2s on them, and listen to them sing. A PDP Concept Maple kit would be my absolute floor for a drum kit. If your church can’t afford that, you have bigger problems. If you’re wanting to spend a little more, the DW Design Series is really great for the price. If you have a larger budget, Sonor SQ1, Ludwig Classic, or Gretsch Renown are amazing. If money means absolutely nothing to you, Sonar SQ2 and DW Customs are the way to go.

A lot of Rob valuable information pertains to more than just Church drums. It extends into other situations as well. I line up with you Rob on all of these things but take issue with the double kick pedal in church period when I played in church I had a double kick. I even asked the pastor if you was okay with double bass. He said sure period double bass triple bass whatever you got LOL. and I was able to work it into some songs very nicely.

I bought a Sonor Force 2000 for my church about 15 years ago. From memory it cost about $1,000 AUD for a 6-piece kit with hardware. Also got an Istanbul cymbal pack for about $600 AUD and a Tama First Chair throne. Replaced the heads a couple of times but still using that kit 15 years later in a one-up, one-down setup. It’s a Silver Sparkle wrap that’s matured to more of a Champagne Gold. We now play behind a plexiglass screen and use Roland triggers on each batter head and they sound awesome out front and on recordings. Now that I think about it, I’m playing this kit in my profile pic.

Great video. I am a long time (25 years) church music director currently overseeing two churches and this is good advice. For churches concerned with drums being too loud (which is probably most churches), I would advise going with thin crash cymbals. The quietest I've found are the Zildjian K custom fast crashes which just happen to come in the Zildjian worship cymbal pack. Also going for a lower more muffled tuning on the snare can help keep the overall perception of loudness from getting out of hand.

One reason why a church might want to spend the extra $ for a high end kit (like DW) or other nice stage gear is if they are looking to attract good musicians.

Hey rob i play a dw design acrylic kit it was 1500 and man let me tell you those drums are phenomenal for all situations. So the "dollars wasted", love it btw, ill agree with but those are worth it. And for cymbals wow i can't begin to tell you how right you are. Cheap cymbals = cheap sound. I play paiste 2002s. But even the pst7 would be great for any application. Ive been playing for 27 years and heads make all the difference in the world. Aquarian force ten coated batter and classic clear reso. Man you nailed it for what makes a good kit sound great. I was tasked with purchasing a full kit for my church maybe 8 years ago. My wife and I had just started going to our local Methodist Church and they had a praise band. They found out that I played drums and asked me if I would join and get a suitable kit. It is only a smallish church and they gave me a budget. A friend of mine owned a drum shop so I went to see him. I ended up with a Ludwig Questlove 4 piece and some budget Paiste cymbals. It is certainly ok for what they need it for. If I brought my own Tama/Zildjian rig it would take up the whole sanctuary and there would be no where for the minister/preacher to go. lol

If anyone wants an extra opinion here’s mine. If your church plays lot of ccm I highly recommend the pdp concept maple classic. Sounds amazing and is affordable. Cymbals can’t be tuned so like Rob said don’t skip on cymbals. Cymbals are often an issue in churches bc of how loud they are due to their high frequencies. I recommend you guys to look into Heartbeat cymbals. They make really good hand made turk cymbals at a great price, with great warranty, and with the church in mind so many of their cymbals are on thinner side and therefore quieter than most cymbals out there. To put it into context their 24” light rides are about 2700g while a 24” zildjian k “light” ride is about 3300g Also a 6.5 brass snare works for everything IMO does that big fat slushy ccm snare sound really good up to being cranked for gospel. A Ludwig black beauty is top but there is many clones like a pork pie BOB.

GREAT video! The two Churches that I play at have REALLY different kits... Church n1 has a set of DW Performance Series, 5 piece (they occasionally use the second floor tom, I wish they would use the second one, I LOVE floor toms) They have Evans heads that are SUPER dry w/ gels and gaff, and a couple of Meinl/Dream pies. Church N2, has “church birch” Yamaha Stage Custom...w/ Evans EC2s and Heartbeat Cymbals! I frequently NEVER use the 10” rack tom, but am contemplating using it as a main rack, and then the 12” as a floor tom... Anyway both kits sound great, and kit n2 I have a LOT of freedom in how I tune it, muffle it, set it up ect!

I will always recommend looking for a good second hand kit to save some money, perhaps allowing for a nicer snare. However, never skimp on the cymbals Most manufacturers offer cymbal packs offering great value for the basic setup. Zildjian even do a dedicated Worship and Gospel packs.

I'm currently playing a Yamaha YD (10 &12 RT, 14 FT 14 x5 Snare & 20 DB) (which bought second hand for less than £300 including some hardware) I recently found a matching 16 FT to make it a six piece. As it stays in the church it made sense to have something that was not too valuable. I sometimes use my Pearl Custom Alloy snare (13 x 5.5). Zildjian A Custom crashes and splash and 13" K/Z hats and 20" K ride, which I have owned for years. If money was no obstacle I would perhaps now change the cymbals to K's, but alas there is no such thing as a church budget for such things.

Great video! I totally agree with you, the kit at my church is not as nice as my DW performance kit I picked up as my first kit this Christmas. While the DW was more than my skill level requires at this point, it was my dream kit in the Tabacco Satin and I couldn't pass up the deal for the entire kit I put together. Ha ha ha... I love the no double petal comment. Someone asked me if I would play for the church once my skill was at the level to do so, I told them only if they let my play a double petal, probably will not be asked again. I personally love the harder Christian rock and metal groups. Looking foward to really digging in and learning how to play once my schedule opens in a couple of months, and also look foward to learning from your information both past and future.

Love the video! What if you are not mic'ing the drums? How can you get something appropriate for acoustic drum performances that doesn't blow out the room? Is there such a thing? Can do that by adding foam to the heads? What do you do for cymbals? Something that might be for small room gigs....just curious. Thanks, be safe!

We had my Ludwig Elements birch 6 piece kit at our church. Now, I never knew what the temperature would be in the church. And the my Ludwigs would sound like garbage if the temperature was 2 degrees off from what it was when I tuned them. We upgraded to DW Collectors ebony stain 4 piece and added a Mapex black panther snare. The DW's will hold tune way way better than the Ludwigs did. Now if I were to do it over, I probably would have gotten a set of PDP concept drums for much much less and sound great. Now I made a mistake and went the wrong direction on cymbals. I got Sabian XS20's we will be upgrading soon. The XS20's are pretty heavy for our church. They get us by. But I do regret getting them.

I personally don't feel that electric kits are versatile enough yet. You can't use brushes, you can't sizzle the hats, you can't circle on the cymbals (don't know the name of that technique), you can't hit the sides of the drums, and ghost names are harder to get right with the sensitivity. I know there are kits costing over $10000 (at least where I am) that may have solutions to these, but its beyond most church's budgets. Also got to factor in the sound desk's ability to control the sound, and if the electronic kit takes too much control away from them and just gives them a pre-processed signal. Also image is a factor, acoustic just has an image electric doesn't. As for noise, well its an auditorium about to have a worship set pumped through a PA, nobody is expecting silence.

Super late comment here, but I have specifically requested a double pedal for one reason. I was in the middle of song one of the first set when the screw that connects the chain to the footboard actually broke. I ended up having to kick the beater into the head to get any sound. I now want a double pedal as a backup in case this happens again 😂.....oddly specific, but apparently it can happen!

Hey Rob what's you opinion on getting a 10 inch popcorn/firecracker type snare for the side? Was thinking of getting one to try out on my kit (not for church) but wondering how it will sound or if it's even worth getting it or a waste of time. I like adding to the kit to try new stuff out. I value your opinion bro. Thanks

Ours uses Heartbeat Epic 16HH/19/21/24. That 24 is a glorified crash. I’ve swapped my 24 masters deep ride prototype and 24 masters thin for it before and received the sweetest smokiest stick

For a low church budget how much money can you spend to get a good zildjian or paiste cymbal package? Our church budget is below $800 i believe.

How about a Kit for beginners or almost OK drummers? Just like golf clubs, expensive clubs won't make you a better player, but really cheap ones will make it more difficult to learn the basics.

Truth! Mid-range kits with good heads is all you need. At my church, I've played the same Pearl set for over 20 years. I bring in my own Zildian Ks, though. We have As, but they're way too bright for my ears. And whoever had the 'bright' idea to get a 13" A custom hat was just wrong. Only Vinnie and Chambers can pull those off. 😳 🤣

@@hiptoalieu Cool! I've made a 16" hat, pairing my K crash and with my church's A crash. It sounds pretty cool, especially if put my shells on top of it. But there's something about the 14"s that I like more.

tbh i think tha best budget/Quality drums at least for a drumset in church, it's a Pearl Decade Maple with Evans drumheads i think it's tha most slept on Drumset even for a church for tha price and i'm stickin' with no less than 5 piece (6 piece if tha 5 piece combo is 10, 12, 16 which i'm not much of a fan of unless it includes a 14 inch toms) however my cymbal of choice, always Zildjian and drum throne always Roc-n-Soc Lunar series however i'd rather have a heavy Ride, because it's called a Ride for a reason not a crash! :P and idc how mad they would get at me for wanting aftermarket heads for Evans G2 Clear on tha toms and Emad on a bass drum because i'm tired of pillows lol
