My first port of call in such cases is to look for a faulty mainboard. You often find boards sold cheaply as defective for spare parts even because of a broken connector. I also often get remaining boards from services for spare parts sent to me free of charge, half of them are still easily repairable. Even if you are not lucky, you can find so many components on a board that you can't make a loss with such cheap boards.

I remember thinking the exact same way about just buying a working motherboard for a laptop. Several months back I had an Alienware 15 R2 that wasn't powering on and wasn't taking a charge. AC adapter went into protection mode as well. Narrowed it down to a shorted capacitor on the VCORE circuit. The short went away and the AC adapter didn't go into protection mode anymore, but unfortunately the CPU was shorted so the board was deemed a no fix. So I searched for a replacement. There were replacement boards for $130 or so, and then there was a "for parts" board for $70. I decided to take the risk and order the board to make it interesting. This replacement board had the exact same problem, but without the shorted CPU. Replaced the shorted capacitor and the board powers on and functions, but shortly after I discovered that it wasn't charging the battery and it was reporting the incorrect charge percentage. So I went ahead and checked the first two MOSFETS next to the DC IN jack. One of them had extremely low resistance; so I went back to the old board and took one of the MOSFETS off and replaced it on the new board. Powered on the laptop and looked at the battery and charge status. Charging. The risks that you take in life determine whether or not you truly learn. If I hadn't ordered a non-working board and learned how to fix it, I probably wouldn't have the experience in measuring components or fixing those boards because I'd be taking the easy way out by just ordering a perfectly functioning board, and that's never really fun in my eyes. My manager was happy that I fixed it and he decided to buy the laptop from me since he needed one with an ethernet jack.

I use a lot of donor boards, often due to speed and availability of parts. Our hopes of taking two broken things and making one working thing can be quickly spoiled by the fact that many donors failed in pretty much the same way. However, in the case of motherboards, there are enough failure points that sometimes we get lucky and it really is just a capacitor.....

You shouldn't ask embarassing questions.
@devonwilson5776
@devonwilson5776 Жыл бұрын
@@dennisbjones Greetings. Why are the questions embarrassing? Without a schematic and a similar board to compare, where will you get the information you require if not from a stalwart like Sorin who is obviously knowledgeable and would likely have the technical know how to share? Is it embarrassing to ask questions to increase your knowledge? Sorin was not asked about aeronautics engineering and or neurological procedures. He was asked the methods that would likely be used to determine the specifications of components if certain things that could otherwise be referred to are absent.
@dennisbjones
@dennisbjones Жыл бұрын
@@devonwilson5776 It was a joke because it is very unlikely that Sorin replaced the capacitor even if he did say offhand that he would. He knows that the laptop will work without the capacitor. He is also bound by a fixed fee charge etc. Typicaly if you were to try to determine it's value, you could remove a similar one near it and measure (especially if there are several in parallel).

Master Sorin, why your first reaction was like „oh, main power rail is shorted, that‘s bad…“ when for each Mosfet, there are a couple of caps between power rail and ground, so statistically is more likely it is a shorted cap than high side Mosfet. Perhaps guy who sold the board on ebay thinks the same way, main power rail shorted, so I cannot fix it…

i agree, for me it's somehow similar to programming, the satisfaction of finding an error hiding in hundred of codes and u have to debug each function to track where the fault is, unfortunately, unlike programming, fixing electronics require u to have some tools, like a good soldering station, Multimeter, Hot air gun, Microscope and a thermal camera. i have a dead laptop motherboard(since 2020) and i wish i had the tools to fix it, but buying them will cost far more than buying a gaming pc

I have multimeters, power supply, oscilloscopes, signal generator and boxes of parts and so far over the last 2 years I've spent less than $600. It's not a professional set up but it's great for a hobbyist like me. There are good used oscilloscopes for under $100. If you shop around everything is cheap now. If you ever wanted to do it, this is the best time.

@@coptertim thanks for ur advice, i am already the type that searches for used parts to save money xD, but in my country (Tunisia)everything is expensive, oscilloscopes here cost 1874 TND, used cost 570 TND, cheap semi-professional soldering station 1342 TND, microscope made in china between 500 and 1200 TND, and the motherboard i wanna repair is for hp pavillion note 15, i5 5200u so it doesn't worth it xD, imagine a car like Peugeot 106 costs around 11k TND(1dollar= around 3 TND) while the average salary is 700 TND, houses are impossible to buy since 2019, a TikToker got a free watch from china to sponsor it but he had to pay 50bucks taxes to get it(while the Chinese company already paid all fees), a girl working online(doing micro jobs) got paid like 2k $ from amazon and the central bank received the money and blocked her access, they said she's doing money laundry, and the list goes on xD,

Lowering the voltage on the power supply to like 1 volt, connect to motherboard, and then turning up the voltage on the power supply can help prevent that spark. The spark is caused by high amperage going into the laptop, then suddenly the power supply brings the amperage back down to the amp setting on the power supply. Power supplies often have capacitors on the output to smooth the output power. Those capacitors are able to provide a short burst of amperage. This post will be shadow banned by Communist Google.
