Glad I came across this. I have a couple questions for you. We have a log home with metal roof on plywood. This is in western Montana--pretty good snow loads--with a 10/12 pitch. The roof is secured with exposed screws and they continuously work themselves out. Is there a better product or technique to keep the screws tight and waterproof? Are we better off replacing all the screws? The roof itself is in good shape but water infiltration could cause considerable damage.

Looking at Teks brand, our hardware store only had drill tips, not sharp tipped screws. What advantages or issues might I use screwing metal shingles into OSB or plywood?

Do you have to consider different metal types for fasteners based on the roofing metal type? E.g. aluminum for aluminum roofing, copper for copper roofing, etc. I'm curious if different metals don't play well together. Thx.

Great question! Dissimilar metals as well as the project’s environmental conditions should always be taken into account with all products in or around your metal roof system. Not all metal products and accessories work well together and could have a galvanic reaction if they come in contact with one another or come in contact with water runoff from a dissimilar metal product. The good news is that there are a wide variety of fasteners available in different material types and coatings to work with every type of metal product on the market. We always suggest contacting the manufacturer of the metal roof system if you have any questions concerning what products they recommend for their systems. Hope this helps! -Thad

We recently did a series about metal shingles which you can check out here: kzfaq.info/sun/PLrMRkz6smMg0GYBWGMrnfnyS4cySMm2we A system from a manufacturer like Isaiah Industries holds hail ratings etc., but for traffic walking on the roof, there are foam backers you can purchase to minimize stress on high traffic area.
