With that mileage, I'd be checking the catalytic converters, they could be restricted, which would put a fair bit of heat into the heads, causing valve cover leakage.

That is a great find! I had a 2001 Frontier, which is mechanically (and dash wise) very similar. Great vehicles. I agree on the comment about the timing belt. Please, Don't wait on that, and get the entire kit with the water pump and all seals(cam seals). I put a K & N intake, and a Gibson exhaust on mine and gained torque and HP. Never dyno'd it , but it pulled better and I gained about 1-1/2 to 2 mpg on the highway. Great to see you and your sister working together.

What a great deal! My wife and I really wanted an Xterra back in '05, but those were a lot of $$ new. I instead found a used '97 Isuzu Trooper 5 speed manual 4x4, and it was a blast offroad despite no locking diffs. Very low gear ratios. At about 60 mph it was doing 3000 rpm in 5th, just gulping fuel. Traded it in 5 years later and still see it from time to time in another town when we go there.

DO THE TIMING BELT IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHEN IT'S BEEN DONE. I'm an avid Gen1 X enthusiast. My dad bought an elusive Atomic Orange one new in 03 and it's been in my care for the last 5 years. The Timing belts on these have an 80-100k interval. If the belt snaps at low RPM, you likely won't have valve damage (hydraulic lifters), but if it snaps at high RPM you may end up with bent valves. If it manages to skip teeth more than a couple, you WILL bend valves. Replace the water pump and the thermostat at the same time since it's all there. Valve cover gaskets are definitely known to go bad and the right one tends to leak oil right onto the starter and take it out. Oil pan gasket tends to be leaky too, but that's kind of a PITA to do. That too can make it look like the rear main is bad.

My first 4x4 truck was a 97 Nissan Frontier with well over 200K miles as well. I'm on my 3rd one now. Change the oil, buy some tires occasionally , replace the timing belt - these Nissan trucks will drive forever. Excellent choice! For the faded plastic: Trimblack, although used motoroil works great on them too, just put a little bit on an old rag and wipe, then wipe the excess off! Done mine 2 years ago and still looks perfect. Don't use a heatgun, it sucks the oils that are still left deeps inside the plastic all the way out to the surface and thus makes the plastic WAY more brittle, and it'll just fade again. Plastic fades because the oils dry out of it at the surface... That's why the motoroil(for some reason) and trimblack etc tends to work really well: Because the plastic absorbs the oils. I'm not sure why but new motoroil never seems to work for me lol, the used oil works better somehow.
