We bought the cheapest VW Touareg we could find on Facebook marketplace. Check out our new project Touareg. This will be a tow and all-around fun On-Off Road vehicle.
This vehicle barely runs, has a dead battery, a water leak, an oil leak, a plug in one of the tire side walls, and peeling everything. Follow along while we fix and refinish this Touareg.

I had a glove box door latch problem on my 2004 Touareg...had to peel apart the door as it is glued together...re-secured one of the two springs and re-glued the door together... getting the two release mechanisms to release the glove box door was a chore, though...bought decals for the steering wheel & AC unit...they look great too! I love my Treg! Between this channel and TFL (and others), my Touareg might be increasing in value! Thanks guys!

Stumbled on this video because I recently found '06 Touareg for sale here, feels very, very solid (only driven 60 k milies) when I drive it, but I have heard about the running cost. I am annoyed of how much I want it, but at the same time it ticks all the boxes of what I want in an SUV. I will be looking forward to seeing upcoming videos of the Touareg :)

Leak in the trunk is most likely the hatch spring cover on either side. The black plastic cover has a seal that goes bad and easy fix. All those buttons are easy to fix. Take them off, dip in acetone, clean, spray black and apply new sticker that can be found on Ebay.

I sold my V8 Touareg and the door pulls are plastic and breaks off fairly easy. The rear hatch switch will develop a short in the switch no matter what you do. We could never fix the leaky sunroof drains. And last but not least. An electrical issue with the brakes. Still stopped 99% of the time. Overall never got stuck and would get another one.

Wow! Based on the comments here I should've gotten my Treg videos up a long time ago, time to get them posted I guess? We did an entire shade tree engine/transmission swap in one and it's still a bit of work in progress but it's coming along, the Treg was in such poor shape. On my other Treg we also redid all the interior labels and much of the scratched interior pieces as well, made it very livable.

Aloha Mike! (Yeah, I'm in Hawaii!) My neighbor brought over a friend's 2004 Touareg last September, she knew I was looking for some cheap transpo to flip-I had no clue what the heck this Touareg thing with the V-Dub logo on it really was at all! It had 110,000 miles on her, but everything worked on it, well kept (one owner) new rubber all around, so I bought it for $2500! Only after I did some research, did I learn Learn that I had a real 4x4 (center & rear Diff lock)!!! NO WAY! All those You Tube vids of this beast outperforming land Rover and Wranglers...Well, I had to see for myself! My Treg low-crawled up & down anything I put in front of it...after picking up the pieces of my brain that were blown from that experience, I couldn't part with her... and what's funny is that I have not seen another Treg on the road here EVER...that really brings home the idea that this vehicle is special & unique...so happy with my Treg after one year of ownership! ALso, my car is a Wednesday car-made on a Wednesday...I really think that is why she's still low-crawling today! Best car experience ever! With the help of Bentley Publishing, I got all the tech support possible to maintain this very wrenchable beast...F%$# the dealerships, am I right? Damn-skippy! Aloha, bro!

I can't remember the last time I bought a 'dub that ran. LoL... I just picked up a cherry 2008 Jetta 2.0T , towed it home and had it running in about 3 hours. Some cheap parts sourced from everywhere across North America and even to China to fix deficiencies and now it's my everyday driver that I'm into completely for about $1400 (includes all parts and initial car purchase) and people drool over it when it's all shined up... 6 months ago I Bought a B5 Passat 1.8t for $150 in great shape but owner thought timing belt broke.... went to his house to buy it armed with my tickle trunk of parts. paid him,got my receipt and signed over the ownership to me and 10 minutes later I was driving it away while the owner stood there just staring at me open mouthed. LoL... Checked it it out for sludge and oil coking and it was clean as a whistle. I went through the provided service invoices and found it had a new oil pickup and pump installed 2 years ago as a preventive measure and lots of routines done to it.... Did a good once over on my hoist, changed the oil and replaced the timing belt, tensioner, rollers and water pump and then sold it for $1500 a few days later to a buddy of mine. It's super easy for techs to make money making runners out of the average persons mechanical nightmare.

This is how I got my last 4 cars for cheap. I buy old VAGs with a long list of faults on the local safety and emissions test, source the parts for cheap, fix them and drive it for a few years until I get a better deal. My current car is a 2001 Jetta, that I bought for $1400 (even 20 year old rust buckets are this expensive in my country). Spent about $200 on timing belt kit and a few other parts, fixed it and could've sold it for almost triple of my investment... Love it too much to sell though, so I'm gonna keep it until I go EV...

I'm pretty sure the car doesn't have a blow off valve stock. For performance install this www.shopdap.com/make-model-year/volkswagen/gti/mk7-5-facelift-gti-2018-present/engine/2-0l-turbo/performance/blow-off-and-diverter-valves/t9351-gfb-dv-plus.html For extra noise install this www.shopdap.com/make-model-year/volkswagen/gti/mk7-5-facelift-gti-2018-present/engine/2-0l-turbo/performance/blow-off-and-diverter-valves/mk7-gti-golf-r-20t-18t-diverter-valve-dv-spacer.html

I thought V8 Tregs had a timing belt? Anyways. If you want a beast offroader SUV you bought the right one. I used my V10 TDI offroad daily and its absolutely unstoppable.

@@apexseal2811 you're not wrong. But they get a bad wrap by people who bought them thinking they where going to be maintenancing a mk4 jetta 2.0. If you adjust their original MSRP to todays money the cost of repairs and maintenance of an 85kish vehicle is pretty in line with other german vehicles in that price range.

Mitchell Mounts Yep, pretty much. I love the massive torque of the V10 TDI capable of towing a 747, but maintenance does scare the heck out of many owners, including the ones who know about the vehicle. As you probably already know, some "simple" stuff require the engine to be taken out because there is no space to work in.

I've thought about buying one of these, do you have some examples of actual upkeep costs?

Shane T Really, really expensive. Comparable with a Lambo It's one of the most maintenance intensive vehicles of all time. jalopnik.com/the-volkswagen-touareg-v10-tdi-was-more-of-a-nightmare-1822934503

I encountered the same problem with missing roof rack keys with my ‘04. You don’t have to change them out. Contact Thule and you can get two keys for ~$5 and save some money overall.

This is a typical for all cars from the Volkswagen company including Audi and Skoda. You can barely find VW from 2004-2010 without this issue, at least here in Germany :/
