Buying the Nicest Wood on AMAZON & Making a Cutting Board

In this video I order some hardwood from Amazon to make a cutting board...but is it cheaper to buy the already surfaced wood from amazon or should you buy rough sawn lumber from your local mill? That all depends on the cost of hardwoods at your mill and if you have a jointer and planer. I’ll break down the cost of the amazon lumber versus my local lumber mill pricing and show you how much you can save if you buy rough sawn lumber.

Just came across this video. Glad you had better results than me. A year and a half ago, I purchased from the same seller. Boards were not uniform in height, nor straight and had some chips (probably from transport). I made it work, but learned my lesson and haven't bought wood from Amazon since. The seller did send me a replacement which was in better condition. Like you said, you never know what you are going to get.

I just purchased this same pack to make my wife a cutting board for Christmas. I found the lumber was mostly funky, twisted, and not flat. if I hadn't had as many clamps as I used, it would not have worked well. I had to stand them up to have a taller cutting board to make it work. Unfortunately, we don't have a hardwood lumber store here in NW FL. Yours turned out well!

This year I did buy 4 boxes of "Scrap" from Amazon. the reason being that some of the species I wanted for my cutting boards and cheese slicers were not available locally. Three of the boxes were absolutely great the fourth one was a bit on the questionable side. Several pieces had knots and voids and were not full length. For me it ws worth it just because the species I wanted was not able to get in my area.

I bought some of this several months ago just because I wanted some hardwood to put a few cutting board together quickly. I ended up using some purple heart and padauk and was able to get two boards. Quality was great. I decided to order another pack and the quality isn't there. I had to run all of them through my jointer. They weren't square and every long 3/4 edge was pretty rough. It also kinda looks like I got six walnut and twelve cherry.

Surprisingly affordable, also with rough lumber there is waste for checks and knots. When you factor in saving a trip it's even better. One thing to consider as well, there is often discounted shorts or cabinet shop waste that could fill those parameters. I recently bought a few boxes of cutoffs for $40/box it was probably 20 board feet each and could be made into cutting boards pretty easily. I'm using it to make a bunch of handles on my lathe. Anyways, cool video!

I do not shop or support Amazon but that isn't too bad of a deal. It looks really nice. I buy my lumber from Rockler. I have had great success. I enjoy going and picking out my lumber. I usually get S3 S. I should try to find a lumber yard. I do not have a jointer but I do have a planer and a table saw. How is the oil you used? Does it have an odor. I bought some sorry can't recall the name but it was the oil and wax in one but it had a pretty strong odor.

I think another consideration is that you were able to buy exactly the right amount of materials for a single cutting board. The dealers around me aren't chopping their boards to 16" for everyone that walks in so I have to buy whole boards, increasing initial cost until I find another use for the remaining material. As a hobbyist, that may well be months. Also, I'm no fan of Amazon but people forget there are third party sellers (which the one you linked is) which means your purchase may well be supporting a small business. Is Big Daddy Bezos still getting his cut of the transaction? Of course, but it's not as clear cut as "Amazon bad".

Being female and a new woodworker, people typically send me to Woodcraft or other big-box stores when I ask about lumber. 2. I don't know any woodworkers. So, asking someone isn't really an option. 3. I have looked on FB marketplace but it is usually sold by the time I see it.

Nice cutting board. I like all the different angled chamfers. At my lumber supplier, the bf of s4s lumber is calculated prior to milling, so for 1bf you’d actually be getting around 0.7bf of s4s lumber. Maybe it’s different at your supplier, but that would bump up the cost comparison.

It's a very cool board but for the money I feel like I'd have to rip them in half and get 2 boards an inch thick to make it worth the value to me. And even so you make 20 bucks by the time they're both gone. Granted with virtually no effort. I'm with you, I'll mill it myself tho largely because I can get the material cheaper. I have family with a mill. All in all tho cool board and cool video.

@theguitarpicker
@theguitarpicker 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on whether or not your selling them and how much you get for them. For an easy build like that, it may very well be worth it. It's an end grain cutting board. All that picking out your own lumber is lost at glue up. They're just stripes of color at that point. Unless you have a way of getting much better prices all you're doing is adding labor. Sell that for double your cost and you've made about $17-18/hr. Milling all of that has to add at least 1-2 hours to the project. I can't believe you can mill that in less time then it takes to glue, shape and finish it. Not including dry times of course. So, in short, to save 5 or 6 bucks you reduce the value of your labor to less than minimum wage only to put glue on all the beauty your so painstakingly took the time to choose. Add THAT labor to the project (it takes a lot less time to click than to go to the yard) and you just kicked that whole $11 you thought you were saving and now make about $3 an hour, less if you actually have to drive a distance to the yard. You could easily kick $5-10 in gas alone. Get into an accident on the way and it could rack up your costs into the thousands, so buying from Amazon could save you 5, 10, 15k and if you like the occasional beer while cutting, even save you from jail and a DUI. That's a pretty damn good bargain if you ask me. Not that anybody actually did ask me. But I digress.
@billballeza377

If you brought rough sawn lumber you would not save $11. The yard calculates the BF based on the size as is. Plane and joint 3 BF and you'll yield less than 3 BF for your project. If you need 3/4" you'll need to buy at 7/8 or 1". You'll waste between 1/4-1/8 of an inch planing, more jointing, so you'll have to add about 5-6 dollars for cost netting about $5.50 in savings, absolutely not worth the time, labor or mess, IMNSHO.

This was a really good video. I liked the way you discussed the board ft calcs, etc., while you were making the cutting boards. I gets annoying when someone is showing the steps of a project with a voice over describing every single thing. I'm like, "I already know how to use a pocket hole jig. Show me something I don't know because I am never going to build any farmhouse furniture." Anyway I enjoyed the way you put this together. I just sort of stumbled on to it as a "you might also like:..." and I'm glad I did. Very refreshing. By the way, I bought some 2"×12" 1/8th" purple heart and yellow heart. I'm going to use it on my laser engraver to cut out the pieces and engrave my company's logo on the back (actually going to carve out every thing around the logo by a smidge) to make business card holders.

So for about $40 including everything you have a very nice cutting board, and Amazon saved you , what??? 2+ hours in going to get the lumber then milling it. How much is the 2 hours worth to you?? Just a thought.

I can see people taking advantage of this and knocking out a bunch of cutting boards for a small profit and undercutting the competition. I hope I didn’t give those people that idea. But then again I’m not that smart.

Something very Mr. Rogeresk about this video sir. Enjoyed it myself, and you are correct. There is something very therapeutic about milling. I can turn a TERRIBLE day completely around with just a few minutes in the shop.
