I already have the bell hats, but mine are Indian thumb bells... I hang them under a crash, I might try them on my HH stand after seeing your show, likely not though, unless for a special sound effect, I wouldn't do a gig with a set as my main driver... you'd spend half the gig staring at those little hats trying to hit them.

I didn't like that stainless cymbal much at first, but once it was on the right side, it had a nice techno crash sound 🤔 Hook up with Tim over at Reverie Drums for your cymbal project. I'd like to find some good blanks and get into some real cymbal smithing, rather than just modifying already formed cymbals. And the Daru cymbal sounds great as a hihat.

As some have pointed out, Lance Campeau makes or used to make stainless steel cymbals. As an aside, the Sabian Quiet Tone, Evans dB One and Trick Drums low-volume cymbals are all made from stainless steel. Wuhan's Ora low-volume cymbals are B20. And, the Zildjian L80s are "proprietary" alloy.

I strongly recommend Lance Campeau's "The Cymbal Project" series for info on creating your own cymbals. He details his homemade lathe, lathing techniques, different types of anvils, stumps and hammers, hammering patterns, finishing techniques (though he never details the ones that involve dangerous chemicals) and even fx cymbal making. He has a few videos where he works from blanks. I own an fx splash he made, back from when he used to sell cymbals on reverb.

There are small Chinese hand-crash cymbals, rather similar to the little 4" ones, with big bells and flattish bow that curls up a little at edge, you get that cavity resonance effect as they reach close to closing shut. I think they are mainly used in traditional Chinese musical theatre, i have a couple i found cheap, and they came from a wonderful Chinese musical import shop in Covent Garden, London, called Raymond Man Music (sadly no longer there, he retired and it closed when property developers grabbed the building), this shop had the best, huge range of traditional cymbals, bells, gongs, and wind and string instruments from China that i ever saw anywhere. Also, Tibetan monastery hand-crash cymbal pairs have a similar style, typically around 16-17 inches, i imagine they got the idea of using these from neighbouring China. Very big deep bells, so the closing resonance effect is very pronounced. These would be worth checking out in a future video.

Yo David, gotta add a titanium cymbal to the collection now Can't wait to see the cymbal project, should be fun to follow. Maybe a "round 2" after you make the first one, see how much better you could make a second one with everything you learn? One step at a time and all... but I'm jus sayin lol. Surprised by the stainless cymbal, sounds good; pretty intense sound! LOVE the 27"... thing... I could never own it, I would overuse the ever loving shit out of it. The 12" Paiste thing is cool. Extraordinarily niche, but cool; I think you found the real use in a hi hat combo, that makes for a pretty unique sounding hat. Shout out remote hi hats.

'sup Dave! GREAT content as always. 0:38 I have to point out though, that the Paiste Signature Traditional cymbal you put as an example of a B8 bronze cymbal is actually made from their Signature alloy, which I believe is 15% tin not 8%. Same for the 2002 cymbal you put there right after as an example of B12 bronze; 2002 cymbals are famously made from a B8 alloy, so that would be incorrect.

Funny that the open/close of the 4" HH with the 16th notes almost sounded like a Wah pedal... lol (also, I liked the blank.) Are those Griffin stands decent? I didn't know they actually made drum hardware (I've had a 10U rack from them (and also the same seller) in my ebay cart for a while... and now I have a discount code! woot) I'd considered trying some Millenium hardware from Thomann, but if the Griffin is similar quality without the international shipping and delays... might just be worth a try. Thanks!

Check out Dream Cymbals Dark Matter series Rides, these are thin unlathed rides, relatively flat bow and snaller bell, with an ultra deep stick response and wash. They come in 18, 20, 22, if i remember, i got a 20 with a slight edge crack which i scalloped, couldn't have afforded it otherwise. Darkest cymbal i've heard, and dark colour too, sounds interesting. Another strange one, a Pearl Wild-900 20 ride. Unlathed, thick, looks like Pearl decided they needed to compete with the Paiste Rude series as it looks similar, but sound is very different quite high pitched and clangy , a rather unique tone. So i decided it was unusual enough i should keep it (i got it for almost nothing)-- but i ever used it for a gig yet. I'd like to say, David, you are very responsive to both the sound and feel of the music style, and of any instrument you happen to be playing on, and come up with interesting and diverse drum grooves to match, alway interesting and a great fit. Some drummers just play drums, but you really play the music-- Respect!

Tiny correction to the part about cymbal alloys: the Paiste Signature cymbal displayed above “B8” isn’t a B8 cymbal, Paiste’s signature alloy is approximately a B15 mixture, so it’s approximately 85% copper and 15% tin with tiny amounts of other metals. Then the Paiste 2002 cymbal displayed above “B12” is actually a B8 cymbal. A cymbal line that actually uses B12 alloy is Meinl Pure Alloy

The "magnetic stainless is cheaper" thing is wrong. It doesn't have to do with the carbon content but rather whether the steel is austenitic or martensitic or ferritic. This is about the crystal microstructure of the metal and not really about the alloy.

1st: Love and appreciate your videos. In the interest of knowledge. I'm sure someone may have pointed this out all ready. But, I'm fairly sure that Paiste 2002s are made of B8, not B12. Their Signature line is Proprietary and close to B15. Meinl uses B12 and some B10, I think.
