@TK Wallace I have a doubt. There's this theory that the captain took a miscalculation and abandoned the ship. Was the miscalculation due to wrong readings from the supposed waterspout? Or due to the excess water from the deck(due to storms) to the bottom of the ship?

after watching this, i now desperately want to write a romance story set in the 19th century with two boat captains who fell in love, then get pulled apart and didn't see each other for years. they finally recognised each other's boats, looked at each other through their telescopes (not spy glasses unfortunately) and then crash into cliff sides

The captain overreacted/misinterpreted something that caused him to believe he needed to abandon ship. They got on the lifeboat. They soon realized the ship was actually still fine, but the sea had moved the lifeboat away from the boat and they weren’t able to row back, sadly condemning them to death at sea. I’ve also seen a theory that they tried to get to / did get to a nearby outcrop / Island, but that they either crashed attempting to reach the rocky shore, or died there from lack of food and water. :(
@dx1450
@dx1450 3 жыл бұрын
I believe it was the leaking alcohol barrels... alcohol fumes on board a ship where you're using lanterns and candles for light is not a good thing, so they quickly abandoned ship to the lifeboat in order to let the ship air out, and in doing so somehow they couldn't get back to the ship, probably due to wind blowing the ship faster than they could row the lifeboat.
@sofiabiegeleisen9333

Makes sense, especially since the crew have to obey the captain so he's pretty much on his own in the decision making process.

But again, things would have not been as "neat" as they were, the crew must have taken food or water for the ride, Or They must've left in an unpolished matter, which they didnt.
@puckles19
@puckles19 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Ryan, thought I'd share a theory that might help put your mind at ease at it seemed very plausible when I heard it. With the 9 barrels of alcohol that were emptied, I heard the theory that the fumes were noticeable on deck. Worried of a combustion, the captain ordered everyone aboard the lifeboat with the intention of returning to the ship after it was safe which would explain no struggle and no personal items taken as they did intend to come back. A line was used to secure the lifeboat to the ship, but proved unworthy as it detached and they were unable to get back to the ship. Not a very happy ending thinking about their final days, but definitely seems to check most of the boxes of this mystery. Great show! Hope to see more.
@teemo3139

This .. the 9 barrels of Alcohol are key to this mystery. This seems the most plausible and likely.

@SapientGalaxy

@@WowPlusWow You really think a single rope tied to the ship would be suspicious enough to comment on? Even if it was dangling in the water, they'd just assume it slid off in the 10 days in which no one was on board.

The strongest theory for this was not mentioned: the ship was carrying alcohol which as you mentioned leaks fumes which can easily spontaneously combust. They go through some bad weather and have to seal the decks so the ship doesn’t flood but without ventilation too much alcohol vapour builds up so then once they are able to open the hatch they realise how bad it got and that they were essentially sitting on a bomb. So they open all the doors, grab only the navigational essentials and get into the lifeboat, attached by a rope to the rear of the ship. They didn’t take any other personal belongings or supplies like food because they didn’t expect to be in the lifeboat for more than an hour or so. They just needed to air out the dangerous fumes and get off the ship ASAP incase of an explosion so that they could return later. But somehow, likely because the rope was tied in a hurry, the lifeboat got detached from the Marie Celeste and unable to row fast enough to keep up with the ship which still had its sails up (having not had time to lower them in the panic) they were cast adrift and marooned at sea and never seen again. #postmortem

for postmortem: for the “sinking” ship theory, it could be possible that they fled the ship thinking it was going down even though it didn’t appear to be sinking. the titanic did take like 3 hours to sink, maybe the same applies here so they never returned to the ship. (also my dad said “shane looks like a crazed james mcavoy with that haircut” so do what you will with that statement.)

For #postmortem: I’m surprised “mermaids” wasn’t one of the theories at least by that century’s standards. They make seamen “willingly” throw themselves into the sea by promising they’d give them their greatest desires. That would explain the absence of struggle and the abandoning of the supplies.

I don't think that giant octopus would have left the ship in such a nice condition 😂
@Whatlander
@Whatlander 3 жыл бұрын
Fair point. The version of the theory I've heard was that the ship did have some tearing in the rigging that might have been from a giant squid (like the actual animal) that surfaced and latched onto the ship, looking for food. Probably still would have made a mess if it was rooting around for people, though. If they got in the lifeboat quickly enough, maybe that drew its attention before it went to town, IDK. If nothing else, it makes for a gruesome story that they could have played up for the final theory. Then again, an octopus would probably be considerate enough to put everything back the way it found them after rampaging.
@TitanosaurusFan75
@TitanosaurusFan75 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I often found the Giant Octopus version of this theory very ludicrous, due to the overall scientific consensus of there being no Octopods in the Azores or anywhere else in the world growing to monstrous sizes. You only have the Giant Pacific Octopus relegated to the Pacific Northwest and Southern Alaska but even they are considerably small, (the largest we have on record being 26 feet long) to threaten any Ship of Sail. However, having the Giant Squid placed into the Theory adds a bit of more believability. Giant Squids as we know them have the size capabilities of harming ships. They can grow upwards of 14 to 16 meters long (30 to 40ish feet). And there are even modern accounts of attacks on ships by these creatures, take for example in 2003, the trimaran Geromino was slowed to a halt by 20 foot Giant Squid surprisingly 1500 kilometers away of the vicinity where the Mary Celeste was found drifting. So taken this information given it is not exactly a stretch or wacked out when it comes in terms of theories.

#postmortem Here's a theory you might want to look into: The nine barrels that were made of a different type of oak likely leaked the alcohol, which can cause a flash point explosion when enough alcohol vaporizes. This won't scorch anything, but it will create a loud explosion or series of explosions. If the captain heard this, he would have ordered everyone into the lifeboat with all the tools needed for sailing, and attached the lifeboat to the ship in case nothing happened to the ship. Something you didn't mention is that one of the ropes was missing, the peak halyard, which was attached to the back of the ship but completely frayed, and trailing in the water behind it. It's likely they attached the lifeboat to the ship with this rope in case the ship didn't sink so they could pull themselves back in. But clearly the rope snapped, and they were lost at sea while the ship kept on sailing away from them.

I HONESTLY THINK I'VE SOLVED THIS! There is ONE clue in this story that is profoundly important and has far reaching implications: The Red Barrels. Sure, Red Oak is more porous than White Oak, but EVERY red barrel was missing ALL of it's content. Furthermore, there was NO DAMAGE OR LEAKAGE to the white oak barrels. Think about that for a moment.... If the red barrels were emptied, "naturally," via a storm or any other process, you can be ALMOST CERTAIN that at least a COUPLE barrels would have retained some portion of their content. Yet, every last one was completely empty? Consequently, this means you can be ALMOST CERTAIN that those barrels were INTENTIONALLY SELECTED and DELIBERATELY emptied. But why? Well, I'd suggest the red barrels never actually contained alcohol. Rather, those 9 barrels were filled with something else. Something extremely expensive, and probably extremely illegal. (Or, they actually did contain alcohol, and something was sealed & hidden inside the liquid.) The person/company (who hired the captain) packaged the stolen/illicit goods in red barrels (as opposed to having all white oak barrels) so the people on the receiving end could easily distinguish them. However, this was their big mistake. Almost the entire crew had spent countless years "barrel jockeying," so I'm sure they were familiar with red oak being slightly porous. Hence, this gave them a "green light" to drink some alcohol, as it would be very easy to blame it on the "inferior containment" of red oak. Well, late one night they open up one of the red barrels, and they find immense wealth. At this point, only two things left to do: 1.) Recruit enough people to easily overpower the captain and anyone else not-in on the "coup." (To be fair, there might have already been enough of them upon the initial discovery.) 2.) Throw them overboard when you're close enough to an island that you can row there with the lifeboat. And, this is EXACTLY when it happened according to the captains logs. In short, the barrels and the timing tell you everything you need to know.

The legend is that right before Störtebeker was executed he asked the mayor to release any crew mates that Störtebeker could walk past after being beheaded. The mayor agreed, Störtebeker was beheaded and then his body arose from the ground and walked past 11 of his crew mates before he was deliberately tripped by the executioner. Regardless of this, the 11 men he passed were still executed. It just keeps going though.... Sources vary on how many crew mates there were - some say around 30, some go up to 70 - but after the last man was killed the executioner was asked by the senate if he was was tired, and he replied that he was not and could easily execute the whole senate as well. Because of this he was actually sentenced to death and was beheaded by the youngest member of the senate. It was wild.

Note about pirates: generally, there wouldn't be a struggle. It would be more like a hold-up. If you're the captain of a boat containing your wife, your toddler, and seven non-combatant sailors, you're not going to try to fight the pirates off. You're going to do as they say and try not to get killed. So the pirate theory could be plausible if the pirates set everyone aboard adrift on the lifeboat, and then decided that the cargo wasn't worth taking.
@katierasburn9571

@FlyLeaf010
@FlyLeaf010 3 жыл бұрын
@@katierasburn9571 Yeah, that was my thought. With no struggle and nothing really taken that would mean the boat was hijacked by pirates who then forced everyone on the ship to get on a lifeboat, shoved them off to sea (or, I suppose, just made them walk overboard and stole/released the lifeboat for some reason?), and then went back to their own ship and left. I'm by no means a pirate expert but that doesn't really strike me as their modus operandi.

I also believe pirates took the ship but I highly doubt they would just leave that precious cargo without a reason so my theory is they boarded the ship and came into contact with a Countries military ship that would kill the pirates on sight, so maybe they abandoned ship before the military ship could catch them since the merchant ship the pirates are on is defenseless, and just for some reason maybe the military ship didn’t spot them or stop to check the ship and it was just left that way until it was found.

I saw this story many years ago when covered by Unsolved Mysteries. I believe they pointed out that the hatches were open, which normally would not be on open sea, adding more credence to the theory that there was concern about the alcohol exploding. Of course we only have the crew's word for it that found the vessel. So, either the recovering ship came on them, dispatched everyone, set the scene and brought it in for the finder's fee, or they got into the lifeboat for fear of an explosion, got disconnected from the main ship and lost at sea.

My theory: Maybe the people aboard the other ship wanted to make it seem like a disappearance. The people aboard the Mary Celeste could have just wanted to talk to the people aboard the other ship and so they boarded the Mary Celeste. After taking for a bit (or whatever they did) they killed them without making too much of anything. Could have strangled them etc. is a mess did happen they could have tidied it up. After that, the people on the other ship threw the lifeboat and the other things needed and then brought it too the shore. The alchohol id a bit confusing but may have just been what they said in the video with it leeking.

#postmortem Hey guys, I’m surprised you didn’t mention the theory about the flash point of alcohol. Essential, this theory goes that the empty red oak barrels had been leaking the ethanol, creating an environment where it could flash, meaning no ash or signs of an explosion. At this point, the experienced captain would evacuate the ship in a hurry, fearing an explosion and taking with him all the tools needed to navigate. He would also have utilised main rope, the peak Halyard (found trailing behind the ship,) to return if needed. However, for whatever reason they were disconnected, leaving the Mary Celeste almost entirely intact.

I remember seeing it on a documentary and I've looked it up and they've done simulating tests as well. This theory had been dismissed as not burn marks were found - but when tested they found that even with paper there would be no scorch marks at all. This was done for a documentary but by scientists at UCL - so seems pretty legit. Even if this wasn't the case the idea of abandoning ship isn't as crazy as it might seem. The lifeboat was tied up and would have been essentially trailing behind the ship- so if something seemed off you could get people to a safe distance- but also easily return to the ship if things sorted themselves out. The real tragedy seems to be that this rope was somehow broken- either by strain, or rough winds or maybe someone cutting it in panic.

So, I came up with another theory while rewatching this. Ryan mentioned the captain being paranoid and what if he literally did lose it; one day he just lost sanity, grabbed a fire arm , threatening to shoot anyone who didn't get into the life boat immediately, including his wife and child. Wild theory, but it came to mind.

From my understanding, people in that era KNEW that there was a possibility of others reading their journals/diaries after they died. That might explain why Briggs opted for such flowery language- on the off chance that someone else would come along and read it, he might have wanted to make a good impression through his writing

That's another reason why I thought it was insurance fraud. The log would have been read by many people in the court proceedings. How ever, I also thought that they meant to sink the ship when they abandoned it, so that kinda messes with my own theory as had they succeeded no one would have ever been able to read it at the bottom of the ocean..

Listen: They probably were docking at the nearest island that was last logged, hence the lifeboat but no taking of posessions or food. Someone didn't ancor the ship correctly and by the time they got back the ship was too far from shore for them to board it again. If the ship was abanonded due to panic coats and food would have been taken

A good theory, but we don't know what happened to the people. If they stayed safely ashore wouldn't we know about their survival? A big part of the mystery is the disappearance of these ten people.
