@Beaute Loom Inconsistent does not equal to lousy. Son WH may not qualified as among the greatest badminton players but he is definitely not lousy. In fact I consider him to be more consistent than some of the top players. That was why he could beat some top players when they were not in form and able to gather enough ranking points to reach BWF No.1 position even though it was for a short period.

@Ying Momota and Axelsen are both world champions... so your minimum for lousy is basically top 5 in the world or less. Maybe you need to redefine what lousy means, because there are plenty of professional badminton players who are not top 5.

Lcw went all out attacking, smashing non stop. Lin Dan played it wisely by controlling and playing 4 corners to exhaust his opponent. Different tactic and strategies applied by these 2 . When lcw play against Lin Dan , he has simply no way to penetrate lin Dan line of defence. Often you see lin Dan just play his shorts casually to score points, but if u look at lcw most of his points came from his attacking play. As lin Dan grows older he switched his tactic become a master of mind reading and shots control player, while lcw still remain his strategy since 2010 . This is what making lin Dan so much better than lcw. Lin Dan can play attacking game if he needs to or only if he has to.

If anything LCW and Lin Dan were playing more on a levelled field, whereas the latter was severely disadvantaged when his opponent during the finals was someone much younger than himself. With an age gap of 12 years apart, what does that tell you again?

Lucius Inspiration In terms of skills, undeniably Lin Dan was better, but that doesn't necessarily translate into effective play. An effective play is a combination of skills, fitness both mentally and physically and strategy, and oftentimes strategy is a byproduct of the two former factors. I think it's utterly unfair to expect Lin Dan to be able to keep his speed at his age. If it was Lin Dan 10 years ago, I don't think he would have any problem playing 5 matches in a row and still winning the title at the end. But the fact that he's 34 this year tells you it's physically demanding for him to play against someone who's 12 years younger. If he was to play against Shi Yuqi in the first round of the tournament, I don't think Shi stood a chance. But he played 4 matches before facing Shi, and what's more, he played against another much younger person during the semis. It's just foolish to assume that Lin Dan could still play like he did in the past when he's this old. World Championship 2017 is the best example if you aren't convinced. If anything, I'll say that Lin Dan applied the wrong strategy against Shi. He played too many long rallies, which worked against him. He couldn't even compete with Shi in terms of speed, let alone saving enough energy to smash. It really is about fitness level and avoiding injuries.
