I use the BX-Digital SSL E Channel (from Plugin-Alliance) to mix drums. This is just an easy step by step process I use to get a solid sonic foundation so that when it's time to get creative I have a great base to work off of.

Absolute gold. I've been struggling with a live drum mixdown recently and I'm gonna put this methodology into play

It's more fun to mix than program drums.

Awesome tips on leaving the bleed on the rack Tom. Sounds so much better. I always find that floor mics sometimes sounds even better than a direct ride mic. And they can make cool room mic when crushed 😊

Floor mics can sound really good. Kinda hard to get right, I've experimented with it but never feel like I personally got it right. But I've heard "underheads" from other engineers that sound great.

This is one of my favorite ssl emulation. Lot of eye candies on this on too pull off a fatt tight and punchy drum sound.😉

I've had to mix live drums a lot more recently! I'm accustomed to just using virtual instruments or loops for drums. When actually having to mix a kit, it's a whole new monster. Thanks for this! Of course I listen on my Slate VSX to hear what's going on!!! :-) I have to RE-WATCH!

Im learning mixing and gonna start with the drums, and then the bass, I use addictive drums 2 so this will be very handy.

I did a video on how I start my mixes - I tend to go to the element that gives me the most inspiration; whatever is driving the song. But that's just me. A lot of engineers start with the drums and bass because that's usually where the rhythm and weight of the record lives.

a great topic - a little technical for some people, but something I should definitely cover.

Hey Matt, i appreciate your videos. I feel like you give legit advice on how to think about and listen to things instead of just throwing fancy techniques around, so thank you for that! I have a suggestion for a future video: how do you go about a bunch of stereo synths/keys etc. for say an atmospheric trap beat or other open, "soundscapey" stuff with a few layers. You can't just have everything super wide and washed in reverb but sometimes you still want the elements to merge with each other while still being intelligible enough to get their point across, but how? I hope you know what i mean :)

That's a great suggestion! I'm literally working on a reggaeton record that has a bunch of wide ambient pads and layers to it. There isn't really an easy answer to that - but looking at my mix I do have the pads and layers pretty verby and wide, and some auto panning happening on a melody layer. But this is balanced out by have the drums, bass, and vocals on the narrower side in the center.

Been testing some strips recently…actually been chasing hip hop sound from the 90s …ssl G is interesting …many used it. I own uad ssl E and neve 88rs and I think I like the most neve…I know its Timba sound…ssl is Dr.Dre. I think that both of them have nailed the sound like no one else but I always liked Timba better …he got a specific clarity but I’m not sure if it’s because of Neve or some other gear 😂

Is that MONO version an AAX exclusive or something? I just bought this today and I only have a stereo version..vst2 and vst3. Cannot figure out why I dont have the mono version of plugin in either FL20 or MPC 2.10! Am I missing something? Great video by the way.

It's AAX - yes there mono & multi-mono. Weird that it's not there in VST.

There is a distinct difference between bx and EV2, not that much in the EQ section as the snubs can be dialed in to sounds almost the same, but the compression is different, knee is different same input level to the compressor as well. Not sure which one is closer to the original but I subjectively like Waves dynamics more.

Mr Weiss how do you gainstatege?. do you just adjust the faders with every move as your levels always are on point. Any tips?.
@WeissAdvice

I start by giving myself a ton of room to work - I gain everything down so that I'm just tapping the yellows on my meters. I like to be able to turn stuff up and boost without having to think about how much room I have.
