Iversons rare speed and body control with that speed and low center of gravity helped him a lot. He moved around the court like he was on ice skates. If he was a less athletic player his handles wouldn't have been as effective.

Im not sure if it's mentioned clearly in this video, but If you defender doesnt really react to your crosses, just do a in-n-out. If you do a lot of crossovers your defender might stop reacting to it and basically falls asleep on you, then you go hard and attack he will either be stunned and stand there or he overreacts and you full it back and shoot.

You should make a video on how to get better with your non dominant hand. Maybe a workout video. Or you could make a video on reads for finishing like when to use what certain finish.

I wanna give some comment to the video. I started playing basketball when I was 19 because i've always played soccer in Spain as a goalkeeper in a high level up until that age really. I started balling for fun and I ended up hooked trying to imrpove every time. Right now i'm working in my crossover and my jumpshot and while studying MANY NBA players i found something wierd that nobody seems to notice and I think is very important. If you look closely, you can see how AI (also Derrick Rose and in many ocassions D Wade) use the Split Step in the majority of their crossovers. These two are known for their explosive first step and this is the main reason. I invite anyone to check players like Russel Westbrook, Ja Morant, Donovan Mitchell, Jamal Murray and many more who don't shift their weight brom the rear leg to the front one during the crossover move. They just step and bounce the other way. It is obvious that it works for them but if anyone is trying to get a hang of the AI cross, give it a try and i think it would help a lot. AI and Rose even used it this way while chaining crosses, and adding that regular split step move to your arsenal will also improve your first step explosiveness. Anyway, I wanted to try and help anyone and while at it the faster and the lower that ball crosses the better.

AI is a better ball handler, and has better overall ball control/security than Kyrie. Kyrie has a tendency to over dribble because of his lack of ability to control the ball outside of his hip. Good ball handlers only need 1-2 combos to engage their defender and then make a read based on how the defender is positioned, and the best ball handlers (guys like Steve Nash, AI, Chris Paul etc.) are able to get by their man with basic first step moves (crossover, blow-by, through the legs etc..) without using any combos whatsoever. They can just read the defender based on how they are positioned. This is because they have great outside of their hip handle which causes defenders to bite on their moves. Ball handlers who don’t have the ability to handle the ball outside of their hip often have to resort to over dribbling in order to get by their man. Kyrie does not have great outside of the hip handle which shows a lack of ball control at the extremes of arm flexion. Kyrie, often has to use 2,3,4 and sometimes 5 combos in order to make a read on the defender before he is able to make a first step move, and even then he struggles. You will be hard pressed to find any clips of Kyrie successfully getting by his man with basic first step moves (like a crossover, in and out, through the legs, etc..) because of his lack of ability to handle/control the ball outside of his hip. Most of Kyrie’s “ankle breakers” are usually just him rejecting the screen on a pick roll, or quick reactions when a defender attempts to reach in/steal the ball. As I stated before, you’ll be hard pressed to find footage of Kyrie beating his man while using basic first step moves, like a crossover or in and out, because he often can’t get the defender to bite due to his lack of outside the hip handle. For that reason alone, he cannot be considered a better ball handler than AI. (And btw literally any point guard in the league can do lots of combos like Kyrie effortlessly. They just don’t because it disrupts the offense. Kyrie gets away with it because his other skills make up for it, and he is often the central player on his team who has offensive sets designed around him.)

Short version: AI had a wide stance, dropped his shoulder, and showed the ball out of his body. If the defender didn't react, he drove to the basket every time and converted. He keeps coming at the defender relentlessly, shooting over him and driving around him. The defenders become alert to the movements he shows when driving by them, and then he *crosses the ever living fxck out of them* Basically, you have to be a great shooter and finisher without thr crossover for it to be effective.

He was ahead of his time. Overall handles tho, give me Kyrie and Steph over him. The dribbling nowadays is much better overall

Iverson himself is very humble and stated than Kyrie and Steph have way better handles than he ever had but I totally disagree. At one point Iverson crossed up or broke off every player in the NBA that attempted to guard him against MJ to Kobe. Kyrie and Step are wizards but they rely on picks to create space or use misdirection to get past their defender. During Iverson's era if you were an elite iso player like Jordan, Kobe, T-Mac, Carter or Iverson the idea of you not being able to kill your opponent in iso and needing help was something they took with disrespect and only called for picks very sparingly. Iverson would size you up without a pick and give you that work and he was able to gain more separation between him and the defender on his stepback and would simply blow by the defender on is iso crossovers. Either way, it goes Iverson not Kyrie or Steph is the most devastating ball handler so far that the NBA has ever seen.

Remember people trying to be Allen Iverson against me on the playgrounds, and once I figured out their moves, it was too easy to steal the ball off them, but they were bit shorter than ai. They key was to always meet how low they were and then read where they and the ball was going to be next. You have to be able to improvise on the fly, otherwise your game becomes predictable.

Ball handling? One name: Bob Cousy, though for some people it would be Curly Neal of the Harlem Globetrotters and a for some others Larry Bird. For someone with the quickness of Iverson it would seem to be a hopeless thing to use a taller person for defense. You'll noticed it takes sometime before someone loses control guarding AI, basically Allen Iverson is like AI, after gathering data in a milliseconds of theatricality a guard is lured and a crossover happens.
