Thank you for the super helpful tutorial. My song book uses F7-E7-Eflat7-D7 sequence in the middle section and I saw in this video you do so. I felt a bit confusing, but I understood that it is ok to just use F major or F blues scale whatever chord comes.
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 4 жыл бұрын
Some chord progressions do not always perfectly follow the melody notes of the head, but work really well when soloing. That progression is used in numerous songs to move from F down to D. Or descending motion in any key.

Hello mr. Hewitt. I watching a lot of your videos and want to appreciate you for all of you doing. I'm just a beginning jazz pianist and your methods is most understandable for me. And I want to ask you: can you please make a tutorial for Take Five by Dave Brubeck? I'm very interested of how you could give us some advices about rhythm in 5/4 and possible ideas for soloing over changes as solo piano. Sorry for my English and thanks!

Thanks for the comment and request. I've avoided that song because it's really for saxophone...it's challenging to try to solo in 5/4, so I'll give it some thought. I'm a big Brubeck and Desmond fan...I even met them years ago.

Fabulous as always Kent! I was just wondering, one of my favourite formations in jazz is piano, bass, guitar, ala Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown amongst others. I’m a guitarist, and I’d really like to play in this setting. What do you expect from a guitarist in this situation? Would you expect the piano doing the majority of the comping?
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 6 жыл бұрын
It usually goes back and forth between the piano and guitar. In Oscar Peterson's, Nat King Cole's, and Ahmad Jamal's trio the guitar did the comping and the piano played melody...but they both soloed. You can arrange it anyway that you like.

Hello Kent Excellent piano chennel! Could you show Bye Bye Blackbird in a solo piano style. If you ever get the chance? I am working up a set list for what will be my first solo instrumental piano gig. Without singing this time like I sang at the other jobs you know pop stuff like Billy Joel that type of stuff. I don't have your fancy piano chops or excellent left hand harmonies. But I am working hard on it lol.... How long did it take you to play that good. Amazing! Anyways sorry for rambling on in this email. I look forward to it if you find the time. If not, thats total understandable. I'm just glad you take your valuable time to show all those cool piano lessons! Cheers! Steve Henry

@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 6 жыл бұрын
You listened to all his recordings from the 60's? I doubt that they were all the exactly the same. Maybe the quote was made in the 40's and 50's. I think the statement is valid for most jazz musicians.
@AustinCasey
@AustinCasey 6 жыл бұрын
Kent Hewitt Ken, no offense, but if you listened to Louis Armstrong from that era you would know that's a fact. If you don't want to listen to him you'll have to ask other Armstrong fans. You're right that most Jazz musicians today don't play the same way twice but if Pops really did say that it himself would be quite ironic. 🤷🏻‍♂️
