For those wondering when it is actually common to say「さよなら」”sayonara” in Japan, it is most commonly said at the end of a school day between teachers and students when leaving the school campus. In this case, it doesn’t carry the feeling of “goodbye forever”, but because “sayonara” is a bit of a heavy and formal word for goodbye, it’s appropriate to use a for student-mentor setting. More friendly “end of the day” goodbyes include: またね!mata ne! じゃあね!jyaa ne!

@@miked2662 Thanks for the add on, but, just to clarify, I mean to say that “Mata ne” and “Jyaa ne!” are used between friends, usually classmates when parting ways. Nowadays, many students also say 「バイバーイ」”bye byyyye”. Also, to add in to you point, 「失礼しました」”shitsurei shimashita” is often said when leaving a room politely (if there are superiors in the room). For example, in the school setting, students say this when leaving a teacher staffroom.

I don’t think she’s right in this case. I know some older people say Sayonara to be more polite which doesn’t mean I don’t wanna see you anymore. I think she’s still in her 20’s and don’t have that much of connection with elderly Japanese people. I’m in late 30s and I feel a bit sad if somebody says Sayonara to me though.

It's probably because it's talking about the translation for "Good Bye" so it isn't exactly wrong to translate it as "Sayonara". Because when you think about it, "good bye" is used no matter if they will come back or not. In context, English speakers use it very casually that most times it's understood generally as they will probably come back later. Japanese just making it more specified that not making the promise to come back means you're probably not going to come back at all.

In German the slightly formal term for saying goodbye is “Auf Wiedersehen” which is pretty much “here’s to when we see each other again”… If you say “leb wohl” though, that’s essentially “have a nice life” and you’re insinuating that you won’t ever see them again. Other options are informal and are usually along the lines of “bye” in meaning.

This is so useful. I'll be hosting a Japanese exchange student for a bit soon and I want to know how to talk to her without sounding so uptight. Like there are three main formality levels (casual, not so casual, workplace/important person) plus the extremely, meeting the leader of a country, level of formal. As students we get taught the second level, the stuff you'd use in public with people you don't know. So it'll be awkward if I constantly try to speak to our exchange student and sound like I don't welcome them into our home or something.

@@sly9994 Neon Genesis Evangelion, (Episode 6 specifically), an all time classic that's not for everyone. If you've ever struggled with anxiety, depression, existential dread, aimlessness or self hatred, I'd definitely give it a watch. Or if you like Art House stuff.

@@sly9994 Thank you for saying you care though, I appreciate it, especially because some people think it's cool to say nobody does (???) If you watch it, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Also, quick note on Sub Vs Dub There are 2 Dubs, the 1995 ADV dub and the 2019 Netflix dub. Both are good but most prefer ADV, myself included. Sub is the best mostly for translational reasons, so if you like that, go for it. The original series has 26 episodes, and End of Evangelion, and alternate(?) Ending film. Hope this helps!

The best way I found to describe the meaning of さよなら is that it's not "goodbye" but more like "farewell"
@uncletrashero
@uncletrashero Жыл бұрын
in america we generally avoid saying the word goodbye as well. we say instead like "cya later" "im heading out" "ill be back in a bit" "cya around" "im gonna bounce" etc etc.

In India in bengali language we say ashchi while going somewhere or leaving a place which actually means I am coming cause there's a mythological myth that if you say jacchi which means I am going then people never come back again. I shared this because I felt it is similar with this reel of Japan.

I do this in english. Whenever a loved one is leaving i say some version of "be safe, I love you" and always end with "dont die" It gets a chuckle but it also is a way of telling them they better not leave for good because i wanna see them again. I think i started doing this about 15 years ago when i was a teenager and it just stuck 🤷
