Just built a shed very similar to this last summer- no window though, but one thing I would suggest to anyone who builds this shed ☝🏼 - a poly carbonate roof. It’s really easy, just screws right on to the rafters and gives you some light to see inside. It can be a little pricey but it’s worth it, especially on a small shed maybe 100-130 bucks. I chose a Smokey gray color (not 100% clear or see-through) but it still lets a ton of light in and looks nice. 👍

I'm an inspector, and most people don't do this on their sheds, and sometimes they don't do it on their homes and you can really tell the difference. Rot and deterioration tell the story of sub-par construction. Very well done and communicated. Thanks!!
@fakepseudonym669
@fakepseudonym669 2 жыл бұрын
you're an inspector and you have nothing to say about using sheeting perpendicular to the plates (i.e. horizontal installation of plywood) or 1.5" screws for tying shear? This is an inspection fail in every jurisdiction in America. The shear should tie the top and bottom plates and using screws for shear is almost unfathomable from a time, cost, and effectiveness perspective.

@@marinaorgan589 I get it if you don't build for a living why it would seem mundane. If @Kerry Clark didn't start his statement with "I'm an inspector" and then talk about "sub-par construction" I would have said nothing. Truthfully, a lot of people steer their viewers in the wrong direction by giving bad information on these "small" build videos and it leads to bad practices on larger scale projects.

The whole building is structured well and sealed like a submarine, but then an interior (particle-board?) hollow-core door. I’d definitely spend a little extra money on a door that won’t swell up like a balloon when it gets wet.

Awesome mostly address sheds that the author has built in the past and high-quality sheds at that. kzfaq.infoUgkxzaRUJNcbypw-fRBDbqqz43ULIa-1EGP- He does have tips on specific aspects of the shed construction in each example. I get value out of this book by getting ideas on what features will work for MY sheds that I design myself. It has terrific photos, all are professional in quality. Book is quality coffee-table style--shiny, thick paper and a soft cover that is also high quality. I like it.

I find this very interesting and wish I watched it bout 5 years ago when I build my firewood shed that used zero membrane, zero roofing felt, and only a drip edge on the front edge of the roof but so far it seems to be holding up ok. That said to me this seems overbuilt for shed and I'd be surprised if my own home had this much consideration for waterproofing :) this really is a 100 year shed! Nice job and very educational series.

As a window and door installer for the last 5 years under a guy that's done it 20+ years, don't use silicone on your window flange. All it'll do is create a gasket. Spend a few more bucks and go for dynaflex 800 by DAP. it not only seals but adheres. Once cured this stuff rips osb and plywood apart when trying to remove the window. The flashing on the door is overkill. Install flashing to the bottom of the opening like you did the window, apply dynaflex 800 in a few rows across and wad it in the corners. This is assuming your door has a threshold. Then just sit the door. Always check your margins. His opening was tight so there wasn't any adjusting there. As far as the weather proofing the rest of the door, caulk around all the trim where it meets the sheathing and door frame and you're a ok

Spend the money on a quality steel door. They make them with adjustable thresholds to keep the water out. Also I look for no ginger joints in the door frame and pick plastic brick mould and frame. Buy a double drilled lockset for a deadbolt. If I cannot find the door frame I want, ax a pro, I use white coil stock and encase the door frame with custom bent painted aluminum for a permanent installation that will double it's life

Maybe just me,but I build my end walls first,with the sheathing to square up the frames using the shed base as a build platform. Next comes the back wall then the front with door. Might not be the way others do it, but has always worked for me to have two end walls perfectly square to start. By doing that,I’ve found that the rest of the sheathing fits properly on corners with virtually no gaps.

Excellent work, thanks for sharing, I use only use Grace Ice and Water Shield Self-Adhered Roofing Underlayment for all my roofing underlayment, I can guarantee water will never come in contact with the sheeting, even with missing shingles during or after a hurricane, itself laminates around screws and nails giving you the watertight finish all roof needs. I had it installed during my roof replacement in FL the installers told me everyone should pay for this upgrade as it is worth it. I really enjoyed watching your videos.

My exterior total height is 13’ 6” which means I can actually move it (well not me a shed moving company can) what’s cool is my loft is standing height. I just wanted to sincerely thank you for being you. I took up woodworking/building one day without even meaning to, I just cant stop buying the tools. But I have never been around it and really have no idea what I am doing. Learning as I go. But I love it! It is an immersive art and very gratifying. Anyway I just purchased this farm house a few weeks ago and am preparing the for this cross country move and have been freaking out because it has garage, shed, barn or any other storage structure what so ever. I have NO WHERE TO PUT MY TOOLS !!! So... I mean like any rational person, I have come to the conclusion that I must build a barn. I have been overwhelmed by this thought. Watching videos and looking at plans etc only to get more stressed out about it. Well long story short I left youtube playing and you video came on. You have a very particular sound, at 1st I thought you were being condescending lol, Then I noticed I for some reason or another that that heavy feeling I had in my gut wasn't there like it was before. And things didn't seem quite so dire. And I could just breathe and watch this video and take everything one step at a time. Exactly like you were. And while listening to your rhematic tone as explained how to weather seal a door. 2 things became clear to me. 1- It is going to be okay. All it. Everything. and 2- I can build this barn.... Truely there is something special about the way you explain things and sound. So thank you!!

@@BYOTools So question on the facia on the high side of the roof....that looks a little goofy when the sheathing goes down and you end up needing to wrap the tape around it. Could you just leave that end straight and not cut it for the flush facia?

I'm sure you know what to do on the bottom of the door when you cut it off, but I save the piece that I cut, and the skin will come off. Then I put glue on it and it goes right back in the bottom of the door and I clamp it. Like new. Got the plans---which are great and enjoy the details and new products you introduce I've not used. Thanks.

Thank you for the video. If you have trees above the shed, you should trim it. Because it could damage the shed sooner. Question: After you installed all the side wall panels, you have tried to rock the shed to see how strong it will be?

Run your roof sheathing so the grain of the wood is going across the rafters, not in the same direction as the rafters. Plywood has it's greatest strength in that direction.

Isn't plywood strength homogeneous because of the crossed slice?

@@HavanaMossLab It depends on how many plys but basically yes. Especially with a roof that size, it's hardly going to matter anyway. But I'm sure somewhere on KZfaq there are people debating the correct direction to install OSB too! 🤣

No Bueno to use an ink pen to mark for measurements or cuts. It will forever bleed through multiple coats of paint until an oil based primer is used. Always use a pencil. Blue chalk line chalk cleans off better than red which can stain longer. Thank you for our informative videos. I am in the Seattle area. I think I recognized Handy Andy's cement trailers.

6:30... I'd recommend using sheathing clips mid-span on the joined pieces between the rafters, if you are not using tongue and grove plywood for the roof underlay. Otherwise, you get flex on the butt joints under the roofing if you walk on it or have heavy snow.
